Saved Searches Plugin

@neil wrote:

Following from the new watched words feature that takes action on bad words, here’s a plugin that lets people save a list of searches and get notified if any new topics and posts are created that match their searches.

After installing the plugin, enable it and choose the minimum trust level to allow creating saved searches.

There’s a new section in your preferences where you can define your list of searches.

Once a day, your searches will be performed. If there are new results that you haven’t already seen, you’ll get a private message with a list of links to the posts. If you want to get an email notification, be sure you’ve enabled “Send me an email when someone messages me” in your email settings.

We’ve enabled it on meta for minimum trust level 2, so give it a try.

SSO add_groups not working

Continuing the discussion from SSO add_groups should be case-insensitive:

Hey, @neil. My client upgraded Discourse and the SSO group loads stopped working. SSO debug logs show that the group names (that contain caps) are getting passed. I see that the group names are getting downcased when they come from SSO, but is that Group.where clause case insensitive?

Add setting to disable hotlinking of large image files

@Nathan_Dean wrote:

We just enabled HTTPS on our discourse instance, but are receiving mixed content warnings because a few of the images posted on our forum have http:// URLs.

Checking the box for setting download remote images to local fixes this for 90% of images by uploading the images to the discourse CDN and serving them up over HTTPS. However, if the image is larger than the setting for max image size kb, it gets embedded in the page directly by hotlinking, resulting in mixed content warnings, and our site loses the ‘padlock’ image that users associate with HTTPS.

I would like a setting that disables hotlinking of images that are larger than max image size kb. This would fix our mixed content use case, but it would also be useful for people browsing discourse who don’t have a lot of bandwidth. They could open up the images in a new tab, but the images would not load by default.

Strange SAML happenings......what am I doing wrong?

This is an authenticated user who’s user name and email is certainly not _a93c3b31ddb4ca943c463f314b0b6ec2693e8b1 and should be logged in now, not brought to the create user page with this nonsense characters filled in.

What am I doing wrong?

Request: Finer selection controls on automatic tracking

@elijah wrote:

I read almost all new topics here, but I don’t want to track them all. So I set “automatically track topics” to “never”. I have retained the default for “when I post in a topic, set that topic to” “tracking”.

I’d like to see other ways to automatically track topic. I understand that you are all busy now, so it is not going to happen soon.

Two conditions that I could see myself using are:

  • Automatically track topics when I “like” posts in them.
  • Automatically track topics when I bookmark something in them.

Others I can see possibly being useful:

  • Automatically track topics when I flag posts in them.
  • Automatically track topics when handling a flag in them.
  • Automatically track topics when I create a linked post.

Obviously this gets to be quite a lot of cases, and would probably need a new UI design to handle that many things.

A couple of questions for the community here:

  1. Is this something other people would like, or is it just me?
  2. Are there other cases people would like to see tracked automatically?

What do I need before signing up?

@gina_riley wrote:

A few questions, thank you in advance.

(1) Before I sign up for discourse hosting, do I need to have a forum already for migration?

(2) I have a great idea of the setup of a discourse so that being said, I am guessing that I need to have the categories already written and ready to go for the hosting party to download or implement?

(3) I noticed some of the discourse forums have really cool background pictures like “Gems of War” & some have a black background, that I really like. If I want to add picture background, what dimension should I get it in?

Note: I am starting from scratch.

Thanks again, Gina

Update to 1.9.0.beta5 fails to start discourse after rebuild

Hi guys,

Just updated to 1.9.0.beta5 and after doing an App Rebuild (same process as always) I get this error:

./launcher: line 256: selinuxenabled: command not found

The Discourse Installation then loads to a white page, nothing else.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

I can provide more info if needed.

Thanks in Advance!

What happens if I manually move images out of the tombstone directory?

$

@john-lynch wrote:

Recently, I’ve been migrating a bunch of data from an old forum (Google Spaces, actually) to my own Discourse instance. As part of this process, I uploaded a bunch of images through the Discourse API with the intent to reference them later from subsequent posts. I thought I had 30 days to do this, but it turns out that the default for moving things into the tombstone directory is just 2 days, and then they are gone entirely in 30 days. My mistake.

Now, all these images are uploaded to an S3 instance, as I do with all uploaded content. So (because it was late at night and I wasn’t thinking all that straight) I simply went into S3 and moved all the stuff out of the tombstone directory into the normal images directory, and made the content publicly accessible (as the “normal” uploads are). I was then able to refer to them from the posts as intended. After I did this, it occurred to me that perhaps this was not the greatest idea I have ever had.

So my question is:

What horrible thing have I done to Discourse’s internal bookkeeping by manually moving this stuff? Is there some image database that I’ve broken? Is there a task I can run to rebuild it? I’d turned off garbage collection (temporarily, I hope) at that point, and I want to reenable it, but I don’t want Discourse to re-tombstone these images. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Recommendations on setting up hybrid site

@rlauriston wrote:

I’d like to set up a site that combines Discourse for discussions with something like Confluence for publishing a related set of articles. Similar to the typical online magazine / newspaper using WordPress with the Disqus plugin, only with better user experience and automatic troll suppression.

I could just install both on the same web server and set up single sign-on, but if there’s something easier I’d be happy to avoid all that work.

[Plugin] Catch and educate users posting code without properly formatting it

@Sujan wrote:

In this post @codinghorror horror mentioned that on StackOverflow there is some logic that catches users trying to post unformatted code (“there are a lot of unusual [ and { characters per line, etc)”) and then block them from posting until they format it.

He also mentioned that there already was some discussion on writing such a plugin, but I couldn’t find it - so here is a new topic.

Does anyone remember the former posts about this?

If not, I will try to refine the idea a bit, see how SO does it etc to effectively write a spec how this plugin could/should work. (Unfortunately, I have no idea how RoR works etc, so I can’t code anything of it myself.)

Change docker device storage?

@adamprocter wrote:

I didnt realise but my RHEL ended up setting up docker with devicemapper and somehow i was able to set up discourse. But I now cant update as discourse now is warning me. So I want to change to overlay2 or aufs.

Use the OverlayFS storage driver | Docker Documentation

I am super new to this and although I edited the daemon.json file I cant change to another storage as I think my kernel is too old. When I put in new info docker wont start but using storage as devicemapper still then it will…

Containers: 2
Running: 1
Paused: 0
Stopped: 1
Images: 20
Server Version: 1.12.1
Storage Driver: devicemapper
Pool Name: docker-253:2-67169354-pool
Pool Blocksize: 65.54 kB
Base Device Size: 10.74 GB
Backing Filesystem: xfs
Data file: /dev/loop0
Metadata file: /dev/loop1
Data Space Used: 14.11 GB
Data Space Total: 107.4 GB
Data Space Available: 57.34 kB
Kernel Version: 3.10.0-514.26.2.el7.x86_64
Operating System: Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 7.3 (Maipo)
OSType: linux
Architecture: x86_64
CPUs: 2
Total Memory: 3.844 GiB

So I though I could update the kernel and then Json file might allow overlay2 so I tried sudo yum update kernel but terminal just seems to get stuck and doesnt appear to update anything…

Some basic tips would be good. Am happy to reinstall docker (but I need to use CE) and I need to keep RHEL

Thanks in advance

How much SEO friendly Discourse is?

$

@Dibbyo456 wrote:

Hello.
Friends. I hope you’re doing good. The question I’m asking probably asked a few times. I also googled a bit but the discussions was 1 year ago. So, here I’m asking it again.

When I googled “Best SEO friendly forums software” the search came up with vBulletin or IPV. But honestly I like Discourse over any other existing forum software because of 2 reasons - Free Open Source & Mobile friendly.

So, how much SEO friendly Discourse is? I google a lot, but no offense I see around less than 1% results of forums using Discourse. I don’t know why, probably they don’t about it, or they don’t like it or the it’s not much SEO friendly. :roll_eyes:

That is the main reason I’m asking this. I hope I will received a long & detailed reply. :slight_smile:

A few more others questions:

  1. Does Discourse provide sitemap.xml for fast indexing?
  2. Does Discourse Ad Plugin works well in Mobile? My 90% visitors will be from mobile. I never seen any in-action Discourse Ad Plugin. If any one using ads on discourse kindly post the link, I wants to see how it’s looks.
  3. It’s more of a features requests - Is there any way to tell Google the date of last conversion date or last replied to thread date, instead of the Date the when the thread was published? Because no one like a old discussion threads. :slightly_frowning_face:
