Open Edited Post Notifications in Edit History View

This would just be a minor enhancement - presumably users are notified about their posts being edited to prompt them to review the changes that’ve been made. So when the user clicks that notification, it would make sense (& save a click), if the page opened in the edit History view, rather than simply opening the page.

The flow would be, click notification -

Coloured category boxes on Oops-page (404)

@tophee wrote:

We all hope that this page is rarely needed, but when it is displayed, I noticed that the colourful category boxes are shown after each topic title under “Popular” and “Recent” and that means that the box sometimes ends up on a line by itself making the visual impression a bit confusing:

Suggestion: Put those little boxes before each title instead of after.

And while I’m at it: My impression/guess is that the page is often displayed when people access closed categories on a new device (e.g. via email link). To less tech-savvy users, this can be confusing, especially when they are not used to thinking about logging in (thanks to the long default login time). So I changed the copy for the message on that 404 page to

Oops! That page doesn’t exist or is private. Are you logged in?

Maybe that would be something to consider as the default copy?

Just a suggestion.

Using MIME type to detect embedded image

Continuing the discussion from Add setting to disable hotlinking of large image files:

I’d like to propose detection of images by MIME type, not by extension.

Use case:

I put JPG url on line:

https://freecannabis.com/media/dscf1924.36/full

File doesn’t have JPG extension, but content-type is correctly sent, so I’d like to see Discourse to automatically update it to img tag, show inline and even hotlink.

image

I believe it would be beneficial to detect photo for oneboxing (updating to img tag) not from extension like it is being used currently, but from MIME type.

Syncing login status between WordPress and Discourse, Discourse SSO provider

@a9udn9u wrote:

I’m using the WP Discourse plugin to connect my WordPress and Discourse sites, using Discourse as the SSO provider, I plan to disable WP login page and only rely on Discourse’s user authentication. Everything worked well except login status is not synced in WordPress. Either login or logout from Discourse, my login status in WordPress doesn’t change automatically, for log in, I have to click the Login with Discourse link (https://example.com/?discourse_sso=1). Same thing for logout, have to use WP’s logout link.

Settings in WP Discourse plugin:
Set SSO Secret Key
Checked Enable SSO Client
Checked Add Login Link
Checked Sync Existing Users by Email

Settings in Discourse:
Checked enable sso provider
Set sso secret

WP version: 4.8.1
WP Discourse plugin version: 1.4.3
Discourse version: 1.9.0.beta5

Is this the expected behavior? If so, what’s the the best way to enable login status syncing?

Thanks!

TL4 without edit-all-posts privilege?

I’d like to promote a few trusted members to TL4, but our existing mod team is concerned about giving edit-all-posts privileges to non-staff members.

In fact, one of the candidates for TL4 was reluctant to accept it because of the edit-all-posts privilege.

It’d be great if a site setting could be added so I can disable edit-all-posts privilege for TL4 members.

Sorry if this has been asked, I tried searching for documentations but all I can find is the Get Started post, it helped me create a plugin but it didn’t cover topics such as what APIs are available. So, are there documents at all?

I installed the Babble plugin, Discourse spoilers, and Discourse solved, then rebuilt the app and now my screen looks like this, even after uninstalling them all:

Based on the similarities of some numbers, it looks like a mapping system (the “2d” activity dates have the same number)

Something is definitely wrong here :grimacing:

Another thing with this: in the console after a rebuild, I don’t see the total duration anymore. It usually says something like build: 5m58s before the launcher loads the app

Deep-integration of Discourse within an Ionic App

$

@ksg wrote:

Hi,

We are starting to integrate the discourse forum within our Ionic app and we thought we could use help from the community here to collect feedback on our plan below: Here’s the workflow we have though of for now:

  • User logs into our Ionic app.

  • The backend, checks for category assigned to user, logs in the user to the Discourse, loads cat topics, and serves them back to the UI. The UI is created and managed within the Ionic app.

  • The user can then read the existing topics belonging to that category. Fetch a topic from discourse via backend.

  • Contribution to any existing/new topic is posted on discourse via backend, post-checking if user has rights to post to that category or not.

  • Can Discourse send push notifications to the user directly in the native app, on any ‘watching’ change?

So, all user interaction to discourse happens through the backend server, not directly through the UI. The user authentication happens at the backend server, but how does the system communicate with discourse so the discourse setup knows all about the logged-in user? On every call, the category set should be restricted depending on logged in user.

Can we also restrict the specific categories for users for the login via web, on the basis of allowed categories form the backed server for that user?

*We have explored the basic APIs which ensures we can create entities in discourse from outside and serve the selected filtered content to users. Our backend server already manages users(incl authentication) and each user would be restricted to a certain category by default. Users can add tags, but should be able to create posts only in the default categories they are restricted to. Many of these questions might sound dumb, but please consider that we are just starting to work with discourse, and any feedback/input on this would be really appreciated. Thanks for the help.

When I try to get user information from :/users/username.json, where I pass the usernames from /groups/trust_level_0/members.json, I get the error message “The requested URL or resource could not be found.” in case of a user. Can you help why can’t this user be find? Is it possible that the user deleted itself, but still listed on /groups/trust_level_0/members.json?

I have a user whose “Create a new topic” or “Reply” compose window limits her viewing area to about half a line. The screen shot below will show you what she sees whenever she tries to create or reply to a post.

The preview window displays fine and I’ve been unsuccessful in troubleshooting a resolution with her. She last used our forum on April 21, 2017 and we’ve since updated our Discourse version a few times between then and now.

Do you have a solution for this compose window UX problem?

Here’s some more tech info about her setup to help you help me troubleshoot this for my frustrated forum user:

  • OS: MacOS Sierra Ver 10.12.6
  • Browser: Chrome Version 60.0.3112.90 (Official Build) (64-bit)
  • Hardware: Mac Mini circa late 2012 with 16GB Ram

Widget Helper stripping attributes?

$

@Bas wrote:

I was trying my hand at my first plugin, and to a certain extent it worked quite OK :slight_smile:

However, I’m having trouble with the helper class. The class seems to strip out certain attributes and I have no idea what’s happening.

I’m adding an \<a> with some classes and a few attributes.

I’m trying to add

  • id
  • href
  • title
  • aria-label
  • _target

The first three work fine, the last two don’t.

I’ve tried to reorder and rename the attributes. But it seems there is some sort of selection happening?

Snippet:

decorateWidget('header-icons:before', helper => {
    return h('li.header-dropdown-toggle', [
        h('a.icon.btn-flat', {
                'id': 'my id',
                'href': 'http://example.com',
                'title': 'my title',
                'aria-label': 'my label',
                '_target': "_blank"
            }, [
                h('i.fa.fa-info.d-icon', {
                    'aria-hidden': 'true'
                })
            ]
        ),
    ]);
});

New Plugins for Backups

@kajatiger wrote:

We built new plugins for making a backup to a provider of your choice. All of our plugins follow the same structure and need to be installed together with a synchronizer-base plugin.

The discourse-sync-base

This plugin contains the base class for all other synchronizers. This way we made sure that our other synchronizer plugins follow the same structure and inherit the same methods.

The discourse-sync-to-dropbox

We forked @Falco’s backups-to-dropbox plugin and changed its structure in a way that fits our sync-base. Check out our plugin here if you want to do a backup to dropbox.

The discourse-sync-to-googledrive

If you prefer synchronizing your files to your Google Drive account, we built a plugin for this one too. Learn how to install and use it here.

The discourse-sync-to-nextcloud

Nextcloud is a new cloud tool that works together with several different providers you can pick from. We built a plugin that makes it easy to synchronize your backup files to any of these providers.

About us

We are the team Berlin Diamonds from the Rails Girls Summer of Code. If you want to see more about our approach and the process how we built the plugins, read our posts on meta. We will continue making plugins with other providers. If you have any experience with a good provider for plugins, please give us suggestions what we should work on next.

Rebuild app without updating discourse?

Some sites are missing letter icons

$

@elijah wrote:

This isn’t happening on Meta, but some other Discourse hosted sites are not showing letter icons for desktop views (in Firefox). They appear to work in the mobile view.

All of the users in this topic, found searching for something else:

screen-20170814-084952

In the JSON for webrocker:

{"id":6180,"name":"","username":"webrocker","avatar_template":"https://avatars.discourse.org/v2/letter/w/e19adc/{size}.png"

Reviewing the code, it looks like {first_letter} and {color} get gsubed in in self.system_avatar_template in app/models/user.rb, but size seems special because it changes based on view (hence working for mobile). I’m not clear where size is supposed to be subbed in and is failing to be.

I’ve seen this behavior at Imgur, too.

Site layout suddenly broken!

Hi,

Has there been any update to the hosted forums HTML or default CSS?

We got reports from our users about 20 minutes ago that the layout of our Discourse site is now broken and we know no-one at our end has made any theme changes.

Be great to get some clarification on this before I go and try and fix this in the custom theme.

Thanks
