Just wondering how big some communities have grown using discourse? Anyone on the Discourse team care to share some of the larger installations? I’d love to see them and see how they’ve organized themselves, etc…

More curious than anything else.

How to force The Sitmap Plugin to generate HTTPS instead of HTTP?

@Yassine_Yousfi wrote:

Hi,

For over a month noticed my traffic declining and my https indexed content declining as well.
After double checking my site found that the sitemap plugin is the one causing the issue by indexing http content not https… even though the website is set to auto redirect https to http… it seems that this has affected our traffic, and seem that Google is indexing http content rather than https…

so my question, is there anyway we can force it to generate https urls instead?

can someone please tag the plugin makers if possible too :slight_smile: they could have some more insights into this :slight_smile:
Thanks

Disable javascript for disabled plugins

@David_Taylor wrote:

One of the main issues people seem to have on Meta is broken plugins. There is a natural assumption that ‘disabling’ a plugin in the admin interface will stop any issues caused by it. The reality is that plugin javascript is still loaded, and can still completely break Discourse.

I have a working PR which ‘fixes’ this behaviour.

If you’ve ever looked at the plugin_third_party.js file, you’ll know it looks something like this (eval only used in development, but similar idea in production)

I’ve added a pre-processor which wraps those definitions so they end up like this:

Then, before the application starts up, discourse.js steps through each one of those definitions, and will ignore any definitions for disabled plugins. (we already have a list of disabled plugins client-side for automatically disabling plugin outlets).

As far as I can tell locally and on my instance, it works great. I can deliberately add a broken “import” line to a plugin file, see that the site is broken, go and disable the plugin, and then the site works again :tada:

Is this the right approach to be taking?

Is there any difference between DigitalOcean and Linode for Discourse installation?

@mhwebee wrote:

When I started with Discourse, I’ve been recommended to use DigitalOcean as hosting provided, which is what I’m using now. However, recently I heard about Linode, which seems to be very a very similar service. So checking around, I noticed that Linode offers more RAM than DigitalOcean for the same price. Though support is limited, you can actually contact the company through phone. If required they even have support packages that you can purchase.

Is there any reason why Discourse usually prefers DigitalOcean? Is there anything bad about Linode?

Simplifying the top menu

@mcwumbly wrote:

We did some initial user research via a survey and then about a dozen user interviews to learn more about how people are interacting with our site and what they find useful and confusing.

We discovered that the top menu is rarely used, and that people were quite confused about the difference between the “New”, “Unread” and “Latest” tabs. Most of the frequent visitors who read a lot just used the Latest tab.

In response to this, we are exploring simplifying the top menu.

In particular, what I’m thinking is going from this:

To this:

I think I can accomplish this by:

  1. Updating the site setting for the top menu and just choosing [latest, categories, unread]
  2. Adding some custom CSS to hide the categories dropdow

I figure people can still get to these other things via the hamburger menu, and to a category in 2 other ways: The categories page and. the label next to a topic. But are there any gotchas people can think of that I should be aware of with removing the categories dropdown?

One other things that I’d like to consider is hiding the Unread tab if there is nothing there. How would I go about that?
Has anyone tried anything like that?

Prompt users to share their post after they reply or create a new topic

$

@mcwumbly wrote:

Something that came up in our recent user research is that infrequent users often visit the site when someone shares a topic via Slack or email.

This led me to wonder what it would take to add some kind of prompt after a user posts to suggest that they share it in other channels where folks hang out that might be interested to read it or join the discussion.

I’m thinking something along the lines of the just-in-time prompts that come up during the process while a user is writing a post are great, but smaller and in/over the topic stream above or below the post they just created.

Has anyone tried anything like that before? How’d it work out?

My forum is a invite only forum. Currently, new users receive two emails:

  1. invitation email.

Is it possible to prevent this 2nd email from being sent? This email is really not necessary.

@schungx wrote:

Is there a feature to automatically alert staff (or some team) that a topic has not been solved/handled/replied to for a period of time?

This will make the solved plugin much more powerful.

What would be perfect is an escalation level type of trigger:

  1. If unsolved for X days, a particular @team gets a PM
  2. If unsolved for Y days, all staff get a PM
  3. If unsolved for Z days, some email got sent to some hot honcho to call down fire and doom

Discourse with apache port problem

@ozkan wrote:

Hi,

I guess they’ve been asked a lot of times before. However, the existing solutions did not work.

First of all; I use nginx and apache on ubuntu 16.04 server (on ovh). I have fulfilled the directions; at the end of discourse installing stage 443 port already in use error comes out. When I mark auto-port assign option, discourse on 32777 port working properly with apache and nginx. (domain .com:32777 works properly but domain .com opens plesk default page).

When I stop the apache, discourse with nginx same problem continues. I applied this directions ( Running other websites on the same machine as Discourse) and problem not resolved. 80 and 443 ports are used by nginx or apache and I can’t redirect 80 to 32777. I tried virtualhost (maybe I have done wrong) and server tags in 000-default.conf in nginx conf files.

I’m reinstalling the server without ssl. What do you suggest from the beginning?

Can I create a plugin that checks users and grant access to group based on activity?

Sorry if I post in the wrong category. I’ m new to discourse plugin development. I looked through the api doc. I wonder is it possible to run a program periodically to count how many posts a user posted in a category (which is for new users to show their ability) and grant access to some private groups after this checking. I’ m wondering if there is some plugin similar. Thanks!

Could the undelete flow be improved?

$

@gmanjapan wrote:

Here’s the flow right now as far as I can tell

  1. Type reply
  2. Post it
  3. Realize something is wrong
  4. Delete it so no one responds to the wrong message
  5. Now you want to fix it but there’s no way to pick edit and undelete

Instead you have to pick undelete as a separate action which means people start immediately responding to the message you were trying to fix while you take 5 to 10 minutes to edit the message.

That seems like just being able to pick edit on a deleted message and having the the submit/reply button be effectively undelete would lead to better discussions.

I suppose someone will tell me users should just make a new reply but I wouldn’t expect the average user to guess that workflow. I’d expect them to undelete and edit which seems to lead to derailed discussions.

Duplicate account icon for suspended users

@henrikbg wrote:

On our Discourse forum, we’re reaching a point where we can no longer keep track of all the suspended users and whether or not they’re creating duplicate accounts. Users are bypassing suspensions by creating duplicate accounts, and it’s beginning to become an issue for us.

I thought of a way to help to reduce the number of unnoticed duplicate accounts that suspended users are creating and I’ve attached a quick mockup below. The idea here is to have an exclamation mark (or anything else along the same line) that indicates that a user has another account linked to the suspended one. This makes it easy for us to see if suspended users have a duplicate account at a quick glance.

This is a rough sketch and improvements can certainly be made. I’m looking forward to your feedback!

On my forum in posts all images is loaded correctly but from remote server.

When I use “rake posts:rebake” i have “more” images on my local server but this is only a few images. I have ~170GB free space. How to fix it?

Sorry for my english.
