Can I only allow sign ups from a specific domain?

Juan Manuel Formoso wrote:

I have a private instance for internal discussion, and some users sign up with their personal gmail address. This generates that a digest is sent to them even though they left the company.

I want to allow sign ups using only the company e-mail address.

Is it already possible? Would you accept a PR for it if not?

Problem with welcome notification for invited users

Alexandre Angelim wrote:

When someone accepts an invitation, he receives a welcome notification. The text of that message is being addressed to the inviter, instead of the invited: {inviter.username} Welcome to...

I'm trying to debug it but I really can't pinpoint where the problem is. Everything looks ok in InvitesController.

I can't test it on meta or try because I don't yet have enough trust level.

Missing Category Causing Create Topic Failures

Christopher Baker wrote:

Hi there, first, thank you for an amazing project. It's been a wonderful community catalyst for us.

First a few details about our setup:

  • We recently moved from the Ubuntu 12.04 to the docker setup (although I think this issue may have happened before). We upgraded by creating a backup in the admin panel and uploading it to our new clean docker install.
  • We are on Discourse 0.9.9
  • We are using a digital ocean 2 GB droplet with a 1 GB swap (just in case).
  • We are running Ubuntu 12.04.4 LTS.

Some of our users are encountering a strange issue when creating new topics. For instance, this user posted a new topic with a hyperlink and ended up seeing this:

He was no longer able to see his post, but I was. It was not assigned a valid category, but rather a junk category that I have been trying to delete.

When I give this user admin rights he can see it OR when I re-categorize it (I have admin rights), it becomes visible to all.

Other users encountering the same issue have gotten message post failures that read "500 error" in a small modal window (sorry no screen shot). Still others have gotten this just after hitting the "create topic":

In this case, like the others, the user was unable to view the topic because it was categorized with a category that they were unable to see (he was not an admin). When I manually categorized it, everyone was able to see it.

Ultimately, from my sleuthing it seems to be some kind of problem related to a bogus category mixing with the permissions of the newer [Staff] category (we started using Discourse before that category was added).

Here are some other clues from my end.

  1. Sidekiq is choking on lots of category_id when sending email updates.

  2. I look at one of these failed posts and find it in the "staff" cateogory.

  3. I open the strange post.

  4. I check its category:

So my theory is that on occasion, when users are creating a new topic, this "Ghost" category (maybe it has a nil category id?) is being assigned to the topic (this happens even when the user manually selects a different category). Since this category is broken and has admin only security settings (not sure where to change that on a category I can't see ... without a manual dive into the database), the user is unable to see their new post.

Hopefully this makes some sense ...

Thanks for thinking about it with us!

Discourse deployment failing while trying to bootstrap

What could I be doing wrong? Is there any more information about my environment that I can give you to help you diagnose this issue?

EDIT: is there something that's very specific to DigitalOcean in these instructions?

EDIT 2: I just tried the "advanced" guide, with the same result.

Thanks.

Reply button while logged out

There should be a reply button while logged out. Most users will create an account only when want to say something. Right now, if someone lands on a discourse thread from Google and there no clear way to reply or what to do next. There should be a reply button that brings up the sign up or log in lightbox. Making answering as easy as possible was one of the big wins of Stack Overflow.

Invite workflow

0

Alexandre Angelim wrote:

I've been thinking about the invite workflow and I have the following suggestions. Let me know what you think.

  1. Invited people shouldn't have to confirm email address. The only way they got to the forum was reading an undisclosed token in their email.
  2. email_domains_blacklist should be used to validate invite emails. The inviter should know that email cannot be used.
  3. We could create a notification when creating invite accounts to instruct them to define username and password before leaving. That could avoid some confusion later on, when they try to login again.
  4. Maybe we could send a different welcome message to invited accounts, adding some information related to their condition. The password definition being one of them. Stating that they were referred and that is reflected in our trust and that their actions would also affect the inviter's reputation. [welcome_invite already has a different template.]
  5. The inviter should be able to invite more than one person at once. Maybe a email list separated by commas with a clear limit.
  6. Ask for the invited name when creating an invite. Starting the email with the inviter's name may increase the likelihood of them open the email. (conflicts with 5)
  7. Use the inviter name instead of username in the email template and address. Invited people may not recognize the username.

Integrating forums notifications into our own website

Andrea Slobodien wrote:

Hey guys,

Andrea here from the 8tracks team. I was wondering how feasible it would be to display forums notifications on our own website.

We have a link to forums in the home navigation bar and it would be cool if a number showed up and remained updated for the number of new notifications (just like it does on the forums page).

We want to continue to keep users engaged with forums from the 8tracks home page. Many of the email addresses we have on file are users' throw-away emails, so notifications get lost.

Would appreciate any advice on implementing this feature. Thanks!

How should subcategory show its parent category?

Kane York wrote:

Here's something I hacked together in Chrome's inspect element/developer console:

<td class="category">
  <span class="badge-category" style="background-color: #e9dd00; color: #000000; padding: 5px 7px;"><a href="/category/bug" class="badge-category" title="Bug reports on Discourse. Do be sure to search prior to submitting bugs. Include repro steps, and only describe one bug per topic please." style="
    padding-left: 0;
    color: #000000;
">bug</a><a style="
    background-color: green;
    padding: 2px 3px;
    /* font-size: 90%; */
" class="badge-category">complete</a>
</span>
</td>

I think that this - including the parent category name - would help for several workflows, not the least of which is that shown above (bug tracking).

I was prompted to do this by the wart in this topic:

[REL] Cheat Mod by kristof1104

Hi Everyone, I got bored and decided to make a cheat mod for Game Dev Tycoon. Using the mod to cheat will prevent your savegame from getting corrupt. Features: 0.1.1 - Add Money - Add Research Points - Add Fans - Add Dream Team ( Fill your team with Expert Teammembers) 0.1.2: - Move To Final level ( Hardware and RnD lab included) 0.1.3: - Ability to add AAA research 0.1.4 - Move in Time function, you can now goto any date in the game. 0.1.6 - Money can now be added By 1M, 10M, 20M - ...

See that [REL] in the title there? Yeah. That's ugly. I think it would be better if they could use a category like this:

(Modding: Release as opposed to "Modding: discussion", etc.)

We should probably have some subcategories here on Meta to do testing of the codepaths for subcategories...

For example, the "bug: open" and "bug: complete" categories featured above, where "bug: complete" has permissions of everyone can reply/see. (Actually, does that forbid moving topics into the category? I'll test and report back...)

Setting up uploads to S3

0
0

Régis Hanol wrote:

So, you want to use S3 to handle image uploads? Here's the definitive guide:

S3 registration

Head over to http://aws.amazon.com/s3/ and click on .

During the create account process, make sure you provide payment information, otherwise you won't be able to use S3. There's no registration fee, you will only be charged for what you use, if you exceed the free usage tier.

User creation

Creating a user account

Sign in to AWS Management Console and click on to access the AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM) console which enables you to manage access to your AWS resources.

We need to create a user account, so click on the Users link on the left handside and then the button. Type in a descriptive user name and make sure the "Generate an access key for each User" checkbox is checked.

Here's the critical step: make sure you either download the credentials or you copy and paste somewhere safe both Access Key ID and Secret Access Key values. We will need them later.

Setting permissions

Once the user is created, we need to set him permission. Select the user you've just created in the upper panel, click on the Permissions tab in the lower panel and then click the button.

In the "Manage User Permissions" popup, select the radio button and click the select button to manually enter the permission.

Type in a descriptive name for the policy and use the following piece of code as a template for your policy document:

{
  "Version": "2012-10-17",
  "Statement": [
    {
      "Effect": "Allow",
      "Action": "s3:*",
      "Resource": [
        "arn:aws:s3:::name-of-your-bucket",
        "arn:aws:s3:::name-of-your-bucket/*"
      ]
    }
  ]
}

Make sure you change both references to "name-of-your-bucket" with the name of the bucket you will use for your Discourse instance before applying the policy.

Discourse configuration

Now that you've properly set up S3, the final step is to configure your Discourse forum. Make sure you're logged in with an administrator account and go the Settings section in the admin panel.

Type in "S3" in the textbox on the right to display only the relevant settings:

You will need to:

  • Check the "enable_s3_uploads" checkbox to activate the feature
  • Paste in both "Access Key Id" and "Secret Access Key" in their respective text fields
  • Enter the name of the bucket you've authorized in the "s3_upload_bucket"

The "region" setting is optional and defaults to "us-east-1". You should enter the location (eg. eu-west-1, sa-east-1, etc...) that is nearest to your users for better performances.

Enjoy

That's it. From now on, all your images will be uploaded to and served from S3.

Note how you did not have to create your S3 bucket? That's because Discourse will automagically create it for you if it doesn't already exists. wink

Chinese search issues

Leung Aaron wrote:

Now the Chinese search function fails to work completely. I had tested from a previous built from Bitnami, and the search works well, but now in the 0.9.8.5 and even the 0.9.8.7 version, it is completely broken , and I could just only search by english keywords.

There is also one issue that I am very concerned about : Will there be compatibility problems if I backup from an older version, than restore to a newer version? I tried to restore from a 0.9.8.5 backup file after upgraded to 0.9.8.7 , but it seems to fail to restore successfully.

Please have a look in these matters, thanks!

In comparrison with Xenforo

Dielan wrote:

Hey there! I'm Dielan.

As nerdy as it sounds, I am on a team of people who run a website for a gaming community. When we formed, the only forum software our primary starting userbase was familiar with was Xenforo. We went with Xenforo however we are relatively unhappy with it. It's closed source, aging, plugins are also closed source + expensive, and at times difficult to work with. I've looked far and wide for open-source alternatives. I have a question about the user interface of Discourse.

In Xenforo, you can create subforums, and adjust permissions on usergroups so that these forums are only visible and/or accessible by certain people. In Discourse there are no subforums, only tags. Can I achieve a similar level of control in Discourse using tags? Can permissions be applied to tags?

Linking my subdomain to Digital Ocean Droplet IP address

BDub wrote:

So I've probably spent about 10 hours now working to get discourse setup on many different servers, from Bitnami directly, to Amazon AWS with Bitnami image, to Digital Ocean and installing manually with Docker. Thankfully I already know Discourse is awexome, which gave me persistence to make this work. In my limited experience, Digital Ocean 2GB 40GB SSD is the best deal out of the three, which actually seems to work well too!

That said, I have it up and running, and mail through Mandrill is working.

I'm getting hung up on this part:

If you set DISCOURSE_HOSTNAME to discourse.example.com, this means you want to host our instance of Discourse on http://discourse.example.com/. You'll need to change your DNS records to reflect the IP address and preferred URL address of your server.

I've set my DISCOURSE_HOSTNAME to community.mydomain.com and in my web host's domain setup I have changed the DNS A Record IPv4 to point to the IP address that Digital Ocean gave me. Just doing this won't load my discourse forum when I visit community.mydomain.com, but if I also add a HTTP Redirect to my subdomain, it loads the discourse forum but shows me the IP address as the URL, not community.mydomain.com

Would someone please give me some advice here on what I'm missing?

Here's a screenshot of my DNS record hosted with 1and1.com:

Paid: Social groups for Discourse

Stefan wrote:

Hello! I'm interested in having a social group functionality for Discourse that needs to work like this:

  • every member can open a new group or join an existing group;
  • a group can be public (everybody can read and members can post), private (only members can read/post), exclusive (same as private but you can only join if you are invited);
  • the group owner can moderate the content on it's own group;
  • trust levels per group;
  • invite to group functionality;
  • per group categories that can be watched, tracked or muted.

Please send me a time and money estimate if you are interested in doing this.

Thanks!
