Changing Welcome Message

@henrikbg wrote:

On our Discourse forum, we’re looking into changing our welcome message to a custom made one that reflects our community specifically. We were unaware that when Discobot came to be, the original welcome message changed to a “walk-through” of core Discourse functions.

I had a look through a few topics regarding altering the welcome message and found this link:

admin/customize/email_templates/system_messages.welcome_user

We swapped the old content for the new custom made content and whenever we create a new account, the Discobot message shows up, not the custom made message we inputted.

Surely there must be a way to set the welcome message to a static message instead of the dynamic Discobot message?

Discourse + Memberium

@Lish wrote:

Does anyone have any experience integrating Single Sign On with the Memberium plugin in wordpress?

We’d like to get our existing members using SSO with the Wordpress plugin but their access is dependant on Memberium tags and not necessarily wordpress roles. i.e. - when they are cancelled as members, their wordpress user will remain and a cancelled tag is added, but we wouldn’t want them to still have access to the forum.

Any help is appreciated.

Thread summary wrong: Number of users count seem to be frequent user count

Hello,

I think I found a small bug: The number of users count, in the thread summary at the top, seem to be frequent user count and not the total number of users participating in the thread…

Example thread:

It says 12 users (which is the number of users shown in the frequent posters right below) - the actual number of users posting is actually higher…

Email domain blacklist is not consulted when receiving emails (and creating staged users)

@schungx wrote:

File: email/receiver.rb
Func: process_internal

When an email is received, Email.Receiver only checks the following:

Regexp.new(SiteSetting.ignore_by_title) =~ @mail.subject  // Blacklisted TOPIC TITLE
raise BouncedEmailError if is_bounce? // Bounce mail
raise NoSenderDetectedError if @from_email.blank? // No From field
raise ScreenedEmailError if ScreenedEmail.should_block?(@from_email) // Screend Email address

After this, a new staged user is created via find_or_create_user.

The result is, when an email is received via email in, the originator address is not checked whether it is from a blacklisted domain.

EmailValidator.validate_each should be called on @from_email.

The procedure should be:

  1. Do the checks above
  2. Further check first if the user with that email address already exists (find_user?). If so, let it pass.
  3. If the email address doesn’t exist, call EmailValidator.validate_each to check if it is blacklisted. DO NOT create a staged user if the email domain is blacklisted.
  4. If not blacklisted, then create the user (create_user?)
  5. Continue processing

Hi,

I could use “uncategorized” category, but I think it’s impossible to have it as private one. Am I wrong?

Thank yoi

Messages sidebar improvements

@alehandrof wrote:

The Messages sidebar currently looks like this:

It can be improved in several ways:

  • Reduce the padding of items. Each “Archive” should be visually proximate with its relevant group.
  • Make the sidebar wider when the width of the screen allows for it.
  • Use the full names of groups instead of their usernames. (This is a preference, but it would be logical to follow the dictates of the “name over username” setting.)

You configured one or more of your categories to auto-close topics and noticed that this applies only to newly created topics in those categories? Don’t worry! There’s a script that applies the auto-close setting to old topics.

Access Your Site

First connect to your Droplet via SSH, and enter the Docker container for your Discourse instances:

cd /var/discourse
./launcher enter app

Apply the auto-close settings

Run this command:

rake topics:apply_autoclose

Data explorer doesn't show email address with a where clause

$

@awlogan wrote:

I’m trying to run a data explorer query to allow me to collect email addresses of the users signing up for our community. The primary goal here is to try to find out if they are a customer or partner of our company, assuming that they didn’t use a personal email address, then I can add them to the appropriate group.

The problem I’m having is that with a where clause in my query I get NULL returned on the email address in most cases. Here is the query I’m running:

SELECT u.username AS "username", u.email
FROM users u
WHERE u.created_at > '2017-09-11'

If I run this I get the NULL for email but otherwise it works. I read through the original data explorer thread and saw an example using user ID, which works if I set it to 0 in my where clause like this:

SELECT u.username AS "username", u.email
FROM users u
WHERE  u.id > 0

This works as expected. But if I change it to be above a certain value, in my case the last user to sign up before we opened the community up was 384, I get the same NULL values for email:

SELECT u.username AS "username", u.email
FROM users u
WHERE  u.id > 384

It feels like this is a bug as I wouldn’t expect the where clause to cause email addresses not to be shown, but it also seems to work inconsistently. I’m on a Discourse hosted account if that helps troubleshoot things.

I am so glad I decided to abandon PHPBB and move to Discourse. I’m also getting a lot of positive feedback from the users.

Suggestion: Hide/show group inbox via user preference or group admin setting

$

@tobiaseigen wrote:

I have been exploring group inboxes and wanting to turn it on for more groups in my community, but held up by the group inbox/archive accessed via the message sidebar. It looks a bit quirky and will get overly long the more groups a member is in. Also, a longstanding bug prevents group inboxes from going away when there are no messages in it.

It occurs to me that, in our community at least, having a separate group inbox and archive really only makes sense for a team inbox. For the vast majority of people who are in a group and being included in personal messages, they don’t need to have a separate group inbox/archive at all… they would be happy to just see the occasional group messages they receive interspersed with the rest of their personal messages in their inbox. When they are done reading they can move it to their own archive. When they leave the group, the messages would no longer be displayed.

This is something users could be allowed to turn on/off for all groups via their user preferences - and presto! All the confusing group inboxes would disappear! For teams using groups for support ticketing, a group admin setting could be provided to always display a specific group inbox.

I of course don’t know the technical implications of such a change and if other communities are facing a similar challenge with group messaging, but thought I’d put it out there for discussion.

When to use personal messages, group inboxes and secure categories

$

0

@tobiaseigen wrote:

I wrote the post below in the moderators lounge on my site, and thought I’d share it here as potential faq material and to explore how others are using these features and the reasons why.

We have been brainstorming over the last several weeks (months?) about when to use personal messages, group inboxes and secure categories on discourse. Here’s a very brief breakdown which I hope will help clarify what is possible and which approach to use when. Happy to discuss and come to a shared understanding of when we use each of these, and update the info below as we move along.

Personal messages

What it is: similar to email but not private and with more limited functionality. Admins can (but don’t typically) read everyone’s messages. Functionality is nearly identical to discussion topics functionality, except you can address messages to specific usernames or group names (see below) and invite more people later once a message is already underway.

When to use it: Excellent and preferred alternative to email for directly contacting a member, for example to help them with a post. New members are automatically sent a personal message to welcome them to the community, as well as a weekly summary when they download resources. Messages are also a great way to have a one-off conversation with a number of people without burdening the rest of the community, for example to handle logistics for an event or plan a facilitated discussion.

Power tips: Personal messages can be a good first step to bringing people together on your own, before asking admins to create a discourse group and secure category (see below). As moderator, you can add and remove people to any message at will. You can also start a new message to the same people by using the :link: icon. And finally, you can convert messages into discussion topics, and vice versa, and move one or more posts to an existing discussion topic.

Things to watch out for: It’s not possible for regular members to leave a personal message and it’s not possible for them to uninvite someone to a message after inviting them (this needs testing). It is possible for them to set the notification level to mute if a message gets too busy for their liking. Moderators can remove people from personal messages.

Group inbox

What it is: a goal of discourse software is to have near parity between discourse groups and discourse usernames. This means discourse groups can be configured to receive personal messages, just like members. Their messages are kept in a separate group inbox accessible to group members. Otherwise messages are identical to personal messages. As members are added and removed from a group, they gain and lose access to the group inbox.

When to use it: moderators have a group inbox so they can see personal messages sent to new members and to resource downloaders. This means we can use the whisper functionality to talk to fellow moderators about ways to engage these members, and then any of us can reply as appropriate. We are not using it for any other groups yet.

Power tips: Group inboxes can be set up with an email address, and it’s possible to turn on staged users functionality. This allows us to use discourse to correspond with people who are not yet members by email, while as a team also having the power of whispers, inviting more people, and other discourse features. If and when staged users join, they can then access their messages. It’s also possible to write a message to an email address, which creates a staged user and sends them an email. (Note: I tested this out with Ashley and it works very well and shows promise, but there are still some issues so don’t want to roll it out immediately.)

Things to watch out for: It is currently not possible to delete group inboxes except for admins to delete the group and recreate it (a fix for this is coming but don’t know when). When someone archives a group inbox message it affects everyone in the group. However, the read status is individual so group members can still see which group messages they have not yet read. Group members can set their own notification level for the group inbox, for example to be sent an email for every group message or only when their username is specifically mentioned.

Secure category

What it is: Categories are ongoing, long-term buckets for organizing and limiting access to discussion topics. Each topic can only be in one category (though can be in multiple tags). Secure categories are accessible only to certain discourse groups. Admins can see (but don’t typically look in) all categories. Otherwise, secure categories function identically to public categories. As members are added and removed from discourse groups, they gain and lose access to secure categories.

When to use it: We try to keep down the number of categories and avoid creating them for short-term purposes. Similarly, we try to keep down the number of discourse groups used for @ mentioning specific groups of people in discussions and to give access to private categories.

Things to watch out for: Because of the longer term strategic implications, consult with admins about creating groups and categories. We may decide to use a different method for engaging a specific grouping of people (e.g. personal messages). People also often get confused between categories and google groups/mailing lists/listservs, so the rollout of any new secure category has to be managed carefully.

Hi,

I’ve had an issue creating users with the api. When I pass the value active as true I get a response that says the account is ready to use, however when I login it prompts the user to verify their email and won’t send anything. Now when I pass active as false it wants he user to verify their email but this time it actually sends an email.

Any help would be appreciated.
