Recompile discourse without pulling new version

@mmartinez1 wrote:

We have a docker with discourse version 1.7.
We also have another app which access discourse via rest api.
Some of the api services (those regarding to groups) have changed from version 1. 7 to version 1.9 so if I rebuild discourse, the integration with the another app gets broken.
We need to change some parts of the discourse code without updating the version, while we adapt our code to the new rest api.
How can I do this?

Group inbox on a group's page (mockup)

@alehandrof wrote:

Use case

I can visit a group’s homepage. From there, I can send a Message to the group. But I can’t see any of the conversations that we’ve been having. This is counter-intuitive.

Solution

There should be a tab, alongside Members and Activity, that displays that group’s inbox (if it’s available). Like this:

I think this is so critical, I would making it the default tab that you see when you enter the group.

Background

I’ve added Groups to the main nav because I’m slowly shifting from using private categories to group PMs. Adding the inbox to a group’s page would make groups a lot more useful. It’s an issue that my users have found confusing. When they want to send a message to a group they have to go to “Messages”, not “Groups”. (Both are options available on our site’s top nav.)

Username preceded by @ detected as email

@Trash wrote:

@zogstrip I can’t upgrade without the rebuild now (there’s a docker_manager upgrade to do so the rebuild is mandatory and I have to wait tonight to do that).

I was wondering if you even fixed the error that appears when trying to type a username preceded by @

A message icon appears before the username (why?), no list of users appears when I’m typing.
I’m still on v1.9.0.beta11 +33 and all works well (no errors) until I type usernames without @ otherwise I get the error “There was an error changing the ownership of the post”.

I see that the message icon appears even when I try to add users in a group if I type @ (The requested URL or resource could not be found.)

Imho, adding usernames without or with @ should be allowed the same way, with no errors.

@Plosp_Rawrs wrote:

What would you like done?

We want to customize the theme, not any functionality. I have examples/desired results based off a few really popular competing website forums.

When do you need it done?

once agreed upon, 2-4 weeks.

What is your budget, in $ USD that you can offer for this task?

negotiable, based off time needed / experience.

basically we want the discourse but to rearrange some of the layout.

there were some user fields active in our forum, which we deactivated. Some old users have filled them at the time it was active.

They are still shown in those users profile card as well as user profile page.

is there anyway to remove/hide the information from users profile page? (on the user card there’s a css class for it, but nothing exists in the user profile page).

as far as I see, I can’t hide it via css:

Changing Ownership of "About the ? category"

@RobMeade wrote:

Hi,

I am experiencing some difficulties changing the ownership of a topic to another user. I have done this successfully before but it doesn’t appear to be responding at the moment. Initially I was using my mobile, but I am now using my laptop and experience the same issue.

  • Select Change Ownership
  • Enter the username (tested both with and without the @ character, and matching case)
  • Attempt to click the Change Ownership button

Moving the mouse over the button displays a red, “no entry” icon. I am uncertain whether the username field is supposed to prompt the selective search or just “trust” the value entered. In either case, nothing happens.

Thanks in advance for any help. :slight_smile:

One-click-connect for apps in the Discourse ecosystem

@DiscourseMetrics.com wrote:

Hi Discourse team!

First off, thank you for building an amazing forum software, which I’ve used to build two businesses. :clap:

For DiscourseMetrics I use the Discourse API to generate metrics for community managers, and so far it has worked well. The API has barely changed which is great because I don’t worry about my import scripts breaking all the time :slight_smile:

I would ideally like to simplify the onboarding onto my service to make it easier for users to get started. As it is now, users sign up, add their API key and then my import scripts start running. But, its not trivial for users to select which permissions this API key has, and the admin/system key that most use gives my system full read/write access of their community. I’d prefer never having access to e-mails and other sensitive data. Sometimes I also need to figure out the customer’s username on their forum, because they generated the API key as a specific user, and not the default “system” user - a hassle for me and getting to the point of importing data takes much longer as I troubleshoot over e-mail with the potential customer.

So, my proposal is to have a way of connecting to and giving permission to apps in the Discourse ecosystem similar to the way Facebook apps do, by asking the user to connect and listing the permissions it needs:

http://eagerfish.eu/images/facebook-application-permission-request.png

(this is an old image, but you get the idea)

DiscourseMetrics is in some ways inspired by Baremetrics, that market themselves as a “zero-setup” solution or “One-click-analytics for Stripe” which is a great value proposition.

In any case, I think the current API-key way of doing is satisfactory (with some manual work), but adding a one-click-connect type feature to Discourse would reduce signup friction for my solution and perhaps others that will follow.

API creates inactive users after adding them to a group

@Ivan_Rapekas wrote:

On a newly installed instance, I created an empty team group with a primary option enabled. Then using a bulk editor I added a list of emails of inexistent users (no one from the list existed, 19 emails total, team members). The system reported that I need to check if users exist, and as a result, nobody added to the group.

After that, I created users (>1000) using API (I used pydiscourse module in python). 4 users from 1000 (incliding 19 members) created as inactive and the system sent them activation emails. I find such behavior weird.

If I first create users and then add 19 members to a group, everything is ok, everybody is active.

What's the difference between "User Visits" and "Active Users"

@Senthil wrote:

I know that Facebook/Twitter/ and possibly others tally you into their Monthly Active User Metric, if you logged in to their platform at-least once in the last 30 days.

In the admin dashboard, we have “User Visits” which is 1.1k for the last 30 days, and in /about page, our last 30 day active user count is 260.

I’d like to know the difference (in simple terms) between “User Visits” and “Active User” measure.

Thank you,
Senthil

Stay away from Scaleway

@almosnow wrote:

These guys are doing some reaaaaally shady stuff.

I signed-up because they seem reasonably cheap for 200Mbps unmetered, but had a lot of trouble trying to set up Discourse, here’s my story.

— First attempt

I initially tried out their “instant” discourse offering. Though it is only limited for use in a specific type of instance which many would find underpowered, it’s also ARM btw. Overall experience was “slow”, because of latency (they’re in paris I’m in the US and had 400ms+ ping) and because the instance was … kind of slow. Anyway I boot up and I see that SMTP ports are blocked, so I try to unlock them and it says you need to open a ticket for this. Well, ticket opened, and I get an email saying this:

In order to respond favorably to your request to unblock port 25 of your server, an additional verification is necessary.
In order to protect the reputation of our IPs and in order to offer quality services, you are asked to send us to the following address: fax+scaleway+51735@online.net
A photocopy of your identity card
A picture of yourself holding your identity card.
Upon receipt of these documents, your requests will be analyzed by the concerned team and we will return to you via this ticket as soon as possible if it’s avaible

So I just said, yeah no way and tried to look for alternative ways to deliver smtp. I settled with mailgun because it’s the fastest one to setup and overall no bullshit involved (elasticemail NEVER sent me login confirmations …).

— Second attempt

Now I boot up an ubuntu ARM instance and try to get docker in there. Docker installs fine but ./discourse-setup fails at some point due to the system being on an ARM architecture (I guess).

— Third attempt

I boot up another ubuntu ARM instance, which supposedly had Docker preinstalled, just to see if that was the reason the previous one didn’t work. It failed similarly, so I guess it is the architecture what’s messing the install. Bear in mind that each ./discourse-setup is taking around 30 mins to complete :weary:

— Fourth attempt

I boot up an x86 instance, these are much more expensive than ARM and now we are talking similar prices to AWS, DO and others. Still you get 200Mbps unmetered so it’s cool. ./discourse-setup completes (in 28 mins!) and when I’m trying to create my admin account it strangely fails. telnet mailgun 587 quickly lets me know why… weird. So I open up another ticket and let them know that 597 OUTBOUND is blocked (you can’t override this on their security policies, btw), and they come back again telling me that if I need that unblocked I have to send them a picture of me standing with an ID in my hand (honestly wtf, they already have my credit card and phone ##). So I delete the instance and a couple minutes later I realize that maybe mailgun offers more ports to deliver smtp. I look up in their documentation and yeah, you can use 2525 as well.

— Fifth attempt

So I quickly boot up (again) a new x86 instance and telnet mailgun 2525 it’s open! Great. So I go through all the issues of installing docker and ./discourse-setup and waiting 1/2 an hour, etc… It’s finally done, my discourse server is ready! No … mails are not delivered again and the log is filled with tens of messages like this:

Sent mail to REDACTED@REDACTED (904.1ms)
Job exception: hostname "smtp.mailgun.com" does not match the server certificate

You be the judge … I think they may be sniffing or mitming some outbound ports like 2525. Why? Who the hell knows. Account closed and not looking back. An afternoon wasted, I’m writing this so you don’t waste yours.

Best.

Are the email templates hard-coded?
