I have one unread PM whereby the green notification will not clear. I tentatively categorised this as a bug but I'm not 100% sure? I have done a super refresh, read and replied to the post but the notification remains.

@zogstrip if you want to impersonate me to reproduce this please feel free.

Discourse topics as Google Calendar events

Eero Heikkinen wrote:

I want to have a category where Discourse topics are going to be events. I want to display them on a Google Calendar. What's the best way about going with this?

How to associate dates with topics? Discourse already allows topics to have a close date associated with them. This is pretty nice, as I can store the dates of the events this way. However, not surprisingly, the topics will close when the events start. This is not perfect because I want to be able to discuss past/ongoing events.

How to keep my calendar updated? I guess I could create a plugin and listen to the before_create_post event to create Google Calendar events accordingly. Should ignore all posts except topics created in the category I want. However, if the date of the event is edited after that it's not going to be reflected in the Google Calendar event.

Emojis Not Displaying / Old Avatar Styles

Anthony Giovannetti wrote:

Relating to the original issue that I filed at: https://meta.discourse.org/t/discourse-wordpress-plugin-emojis-do-not-properly-display/11520

We are currently on the latest version of Wordpress with the latest version of the plugin. (0.5.5).

You can see that emojis are not displaying correctly.

The Plugin:

EDIT: Just as I was finishing this post, the emoji started to correctly display. Emojis for older posts are still not displaying correctly, but this post is.

Older URLS: http://stimhack.com/plugins/emoji/images/stuck_out_tongue.png
Example page with non functioning emoji: http://stimhack.com/fear-and-loathing-set-review-playtesting-guide/

Now working URL: http://forum.stimhack.com/plugins/emoji/images/smile.png
Example Page with functioning emoji: http://stimhack.com/uncles-games-bellevue-s-c-draft-tournament-2nd-place-report/#respond

Additionally, the avatars are all the older style and not the nicer looking square style that is currently used. Could we have screwed something up in upgrading to the newer version of the plugin? @sam

Tagger: tags for topics

Benjamin Kampmann wrote:

Hey there,

I'm pleased to announce the first tagging-plugin for discourse, called Tagger. I consider it now stable enough for more a wider usage, it however still is a little quirky on mobile if you aren't running on master from last night. So, the first officially supported version is probably going to be 0.9.9.1 of discourse.

It looks something like this:

Tags can be added with the composer:

Or through the inline editor:

Important: Tags are and can only be added to topics.

From the Readme:

Discourse Tagger Plugin

A simple Plugin to allow users to attach labels (so called "tags") to their topics.

Details

This Plugins assumes tags are "moderated", meaning that only staff and users of the trust levels "leader" and "elder" are allowed to add new tags. Normal user can only pick from the list of pre-existing tags.

Attention: renders weird in mobile view with discourse <= 0.9.9 . Please upgrade to master.

Installation

Just two easy steps. From your main discourse do:

    cd plugins
git clone https://github.com/werweisswas/discourse-plugin-tagger.git   # clone the repo here
    cd ..
export RAILS_ENV=production                 # set to productions
    rake tagger:install:migrations              # copy migrations
    rake db:migrate SCOPE=tagger                # run migrations
    rake assets:precompile                      # precompile assets

As usual, bug reports please on github, feedback and questions are welcome here and over IRC (I'm lightyear).

Enjoy!

Google AdSense plugin is now available

Michael wrote:

Yes! Since plugins are now able to override handlebars templates (thanks again, @zogstrip ) we have finally been able to create a clean Google AdSense plugin for Discourse.

It's available at https://github.com/discoursehosting/discourse-adsense

To install:

  • Make sure you're on latest! The changes that made this plugin possible have been committed at December 31.
  • Run rake plugin:install repo=http://github.com/discoursehosting/discourse-adsense in your discourse directory
  • In development mode, run rake assets:clean
  • In production, recompile your assets: rake assets:precompile

This plugin will be automatically made available to DiscourseHosting.com customers by the end of next week.

To use:

  • Go to Admin -> Settings -> AdSense
  • Enter your AdSense publisher ID (ca-pub-xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx)
  • Create new ad slots within your AdSense account (728x90 for desktop, 320x50 for mobile)
  • Copy the slot id # numbers (ten digits shown in the ID column) in the Discourse settings
  • Enable the slots you want to use

MathJax Plugin (supports math notation using LaTeX)

Provides MathJax support to a discourse forum. This means that you can display mathematical notation using LaTeX markup (ASCIIMathML markup is also possible using the right settings).

You can find installation instructions at the github page. If you any problems installing this, send me a message. This plugin uses roughly the same settings for mathjax as used at http://math.stackexchange.com, and works therefore very similar.

Advertising plugin?

Manthan Mallikarjun wrote:

Hey!

I know this has been discussed before, but is there a plugin or something that allows us to put a custom HTML banner underneath the first post of every single thread? I read a few threads that stated that google ads wont work, but I wont be using them. (I will host an auction every week and people can pay for an ad spot).

I tried destroying my container and re-bootstrapping and got the Your Docker installation is old, please upgrade to 0.9.0 or up error.

I have Docker version 0.10.0, build dc9c28f

It was as simple as changing these lines but I figured I'd report it.

     test=`docker --version | grep 0.10`

  if [[ "$test" =~ "0.10" ]] ; then : ; else
echo "Your Docker installation is old, please upgrade to 0.9.0 or up"

Small Screen: Once in desktop view always in desktop view

Benjamin Kampmann wrote:

Noticed this behaviour when trying to use the mobile view for development this morning. If you have a screen/window smaller than 900px wide, even with vertical scrolling you can reach the hamburger on the top right:

Rendering it impossible to switch back into mobile view (or reach any of the other actions for that matter) if you did the mistake of doing that from your mobile device. And as it is even saved in the session, the user is stuck in it for ever – or until they clear their cookies.

Notable Quotes: Get to know your community

0

Tim Smith wrote:

Feature request: track notable quotes from comment authors, and display them on a "Top Commenters" page, and on the commenter's public profile page.

Quotes are selected by (optionally logged-in, with X reputation) users.

E.g., click "Save quote" while some comment text is selected. Quote is saved, along with which comment it came from and position within comment. Now a subtle Quote indicator is displayed at that position. Other users can flag the Quote as poor quality, or as misleading out of context. Flagged Quotes can be removed. Users can also like the Quote, increasing its rank and the commenter's global reputation.

The commenter can disable quote tracking to opt out if desired.

I've not seen this implemented anywhere. Maybe that means it's not wanted, but I think it could be great for discussion forums where people come for the comments just as much as the content.

Used charitably, it would highlight and celebrate those pithy comments that epitomize the community culture, and encourage thoughtful contributions (similar to ircnick++ karma tracking on some well-run IRC community channels).

Used trollingly, it would present a distorted view of commenters via quote mining and be a tool for bullies.

Reset all login tokens

Kane York wrote:

With the recent Heartbleed vulnerability, I think it would be a good forward-looking feature to be able to reset/clear all user login tokens, and maybe some other breach recovery-oriented operations.

There doesn't need to be any actual UI for this, just a TUI.

(This post was inspired by Github resetting all login tokens after they upgraded their OpenSSL versions.)

(edit) I think this accomplishes it:

UPDATE users
SET auth_token = NULL
 -- WHERE all rows
;

Patching the heartbleed vuln in a docker image?

Michael Downey wrote:

Hi there. The Heartbleed Bug is a serious vulnerability in the popular OpenSSL cryptographic software library.

We are using the Docker image on Digital Ocean and attempted to upgrade the host via the typical method: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade openssl libssl

After that, we did:

  • /var/docker/launcher destroy app
  • /var/docker/launcher bootstrap app
  • /var/docker/launcher start app

However after coming back up, our Discourse installation still appears to vulnerable. Is there something in the Docker image that needs to be updated?

Update: I did a ./launcher ssh app and went in to the Docker image, and noticed that the openssl there was still running an older version, OpenSSL 1.0.1c 10 May 2012. However, from within that Docker ssh session, I couldn't upgrade it using apt-get. I didn't want to do anything further to avoid breaking anything. smile

JS Exception in composer: method 'shift'

This error results in the preview not live updating, and 1 error is added for each keypress (where Chrome coalesces repeated JS errors).

What about an easier styling/theming system?

Jeff Atwood wrote:

This would really just be a "CSS generator".

How about a page that has nice color selectors and then nicely named coloring categories, like:

  • Primary background color
  • Secondary background color
  • Tertiary background color
  • Primary text color
  • Secondary text color
  • Primary link color
  • Secondary link color
  • Button background
  • Button background hover
  • Button text
  • Button text hover
  • Last poster highlight color

It doesn't need to be super detailed or advanced or able to do everything. Let people choose the colors on that page, and then click "Generate Style" which outputs a CSS page on the pre-existing Style page which they can then apply.

Most of the hours of work in theming Discourse are "replace #fff with #333, replace link colors with orange, replace #333/other dark with #ccc/other light". Having a simple styling CSS generator would get us 80% of the way there, and then we would be able to just fine-tune the colors of things.

(this text belongs to @DanYouhon but I really wanted it here for discussion and could not wait, sorry Dan!)
