Maintaining User Lists in Closed Community

@DMRF wrote:

Hello,

We’re in the process of launching a community on Discourse. Since the nature of the community is generally religious, our stakeholders seem intent on having a very closed membership (keeping the conversation in the family). Initially membership was dependent on being a member of our organization, A

The trouble is that as word has gotten out, other groups (B and C) have wanted to jump on board, while still maintaining a closed membership. We’re having difficulty using/coming up with a system to maintain current member lists across multiple organizations. It seems fairly simple to add new members from A, B, or C manually, but going through and removing old/closed accounts as they are updated within each org seems really difficult.

Has anyone else had this particular problem? Our IT team said that it doesn’t seem like we can run APIs to check against multiple organizational datbases (A, B, and C).

I hope I have explained this clearly. I apologize if this is in the wrong section (and unclear, I’m usually content, not IT!). I originally asked this in the Feverbee forum but @HAWK suggested I bring it onto here

I expect that with a bigger traffic I will be too easy to exhaust the limit of e-mail messages I have with the Polish email provider EmailLabs.

I only want to stay with the browser + notifications on the forum

Colocating servers in Europe, recommendations?

@codinghorror wrote:

We’re looking at building a set of european colocated servers for 2018, and I wonder if anyone has any advice on that. Here are our requirements:

  • Full locked rack rental (42u) at a secured datacenter
  • Bandwidth cost?
  • Power cost?
  • Contracting with a reliable EU company to buy and build the SuperMicro hardware we prefer, and ship to the datacenter
  • Contracting with a reliable local company, near the datacenter, to install the hardware and maintain it

I did look at Hetzner colocation and the pricing seems fine for the racks themselves, but I am unclear how I can

  1. Buy the supermicro hardware in Europe, have it built up to our specs (it’s all commonly available hardware, nothing custom or unusual), then delivered to the datacenter.
  2. Have a reliable local company rack and wire the hardware at the datacenter.
  3. Have “remote hands” as needed if anything needs replacement or fixing or tweaking.

Also, it’s possible we could use an individual to do the racking and installation, if the supermicro servers are built to our specifications. But I worry about relying on a single person versus an organization over time.

Feature request: Category unlocking based on data

$
0
0

@Seth_Godin wrote:

We’re trying to create a drip-campaign style experience, where a new user sees only one category when they join and then every few days another category is unlocked.

We currently use category security to hide future lessons from students by setting those categories to admin-only access, and then, as the days pass, manually changing the security setting to allow everyone access on the day of the lesson/discussion. But this only works for everyone in our Discourse at the same time.

One thing that would save us time and ensure quality is if there was some sort of chron job we could associate with changing the status of a category. Allowing us to set up and create a drip.

But what we really want to do, and what we think might have somewhat broad appeal without creating technical debt, is to create the following:

Ue the time delta/difference between now and an individual user’s “created date” (created_at or created_at_age) to determine which categories they can and can’t view (e.g. If it’s been 7 days since they joined, then show category X).

There are two ways I can envision this working:

  1. A setting in the admin for a category that says, “open this category for users that have been enrolled more than X days.”
  2. Using the existing user level structure (guest, basic, moderator, admin, owner) which already can be used to determine category access, we could create basic1 through basic999 and ratchet users through the levels using created_at_age as the variable.

So, to recap: a way to algorithmically determine when the any category opens for user interaction, either by calendar date or by user experience age.

I think it opens Discourse to a host of really powerful uses, because keeping the community in sync (or cohorts within in sync) is an essential element.

Thanks for considering this!

@Vanina_Yordanova wrote:

Hello,

I need to migrate around 1500 topics from a Drupal forum to Discourse.

I am creating a website in wordpress. I am using SSO, which means once a user logged in in my website he/she will automatically log in to the forum. I have an instance of the Discourse forum, running on a web server.
Everywhting is fine so far. But I am confused how to proceed further.

DO I need to isnatll Discourse locally, so I can play with it and find out how to migrate the topics? DO I need to migrate the users to Discourse, since they get account once they log into the WordPress website? Hoe to connect the users with the topics they wrote?

Please, give me some hints!!!

Thanx,

Theme preview does not work if the theme has not been edited and saved

@Trash wrote:

I do not understand if that’s how it should work (but it seems strange), or just does not work well.

If I have a theme, not enabled and that is not a component of other active themes, the preview button does not work, or rather, it works but opens the site as always, without let me see the preview of that stylesheet.

I also tried with stylesheets used as components of other (active) themes, but the result is the same.

Then, if I go to the stylesheet and click on “preview” without editing anything, just as described before, the site is loaded normally, without showing only the preview.

For practical purposes, the preview button does not serve anything at the moment.

Preview works only if I change something, click save and then the preview button.

Then I wanted to know, how do you share the preview with other people?
I often find myself in the situation of having to show a work in progress to decide with my team how to go ahead.
I first shared the preview link with them, but now that the preview link is no longer available I have to do a lot of screenshots and often they are not enough to explain the changes made, because they can not see them in “action”.

Bratwurst: the wurst possible production SSO provider

$

@supermathie wrote:

I felt like making something the other night, so I implemented an SSO provider for Discourse that is useful for development and testing:

The utility of this is to be able to configure an SSO backend so that you can test out the behaviour of Discourse with different scenarios from an external provider (e.g. “What happens if two users have the same email but different external IDs? What happens if the external ID changes? What happens if two users have the same username?”)

It 100% trusts the user to enter the correct SSO response values. Fun!

If you’re already set up for development you should be able to clone the repo:

$ git clone https://github.com/Supermathie/bratwurst.git

Install gems:

$ bundle install

and run the server:

$ rails server -b '[::]' -p 3333

then test by pointing your browser at http://localhost:3333/.

To run it against a development mode Discourse on port 3000, configure your SSO URL to be: http://localhost:3333/sso and this secret as the default: thisisabadideatouseoutsideofssotesting
