Is there any chance that the Security settings for categories might enable an admin to say who CAN’T access it rather than just who can?
For example;
Group A is All Users, and
Group B is a small group of specialists (e.g. invited guests),
the only way to create a category viewable ONLY to those in A who are not in B is to create a new Group that includes all users minus the very small number of guests
It is frustrating to have to work around this issue and to maintain new groupings which only exist for this purpose.
Is there a simpler workaround?
I’ve tried searching for previous posts on this subject but the terms are fairly general.
Such a plugin could allow to automate various tasks when particular conditions are met. A WISIWIG editor for both conditions and actions taken.
It could be the solution for various custom plugin requests, like a recent one for LMS features, i.e. to assign a particular group to user after X days since registration, and so on.

Our use for this is that we have in-game bad behavior reports posting chat logs from the game. Some games are longer than others. I have no problem eating the space if it starts to get big.
We have a spoiler for our logs. We click it and ctrl+f the info we want, all color-coded (the color coding takes up a lot of the +characters with [color][/color] each line.
Anyway, the more choices we have the better – I’d love to know how to break this limit in the admin dashboard beyond 99k. Or if that’s not possible, something hacky would work too if there’s a file I can edit.
I’ve read all of the discussions about using the API to fetch all of the posts for a particular topic using the post_ids from the stream. However, I cannot seem to find anything that would allow me to fetch the most recent set of posts for a topic (i.e. how the website works). Instead, I’m get the oldest 20 posts from the topic. I think the most common use case for the API would be fetching the most recent posts, and then paging page into time.
Also, are there any undocumented parameters for controlling the chunk_size? I was also looking for this in the admin interface.
My coworker asked me about the blue ring around someone’s picture. How should I explain this feature and how its helpful to community members? They were just wondering what it means.
On narrow windows, the items on the right side of the composer menu disappear and there is no indicator that they even exist until you make the window wide again. On mobile this means rotating the phone, which then (on my clunky samsung galaxy note 2) makes it impossible to edit because the keyboard and composer header takes up the whole screen.
The most important item on this menu for me is the options item, so I can get to the whisper function. Maybe an easy answer would be to move it left, say next to the upload item?
A more involved answer would be to provide an indicator that there are hidden items off to the right and some sort of horizontal scrolling or pulldown to reveal the hidden items. It could look like the options popup.
I do have the formatting toolbar plugin installed, which pushes the options item all the way to the right so it’s the first to get cut off on narrower windows. @Steven maybe you could contemplate having your formatting items display to the right of the options item? Or have your formatting items display in a popup like the options?

I am about to start hacking away at discourse, but I am confused how ember is used. Running commands such as ‘ember version’ or 'ember g ’ give the error ‘ember: No such file or directory’. Do I need to install the ember cli separately?
We’re establishing multiple Discourse sites internally. Sometimes we need to move topics from one site to another. In this case we need to apply redirection for moved topics. But permalinks won’t work for internal discourse topic urls.
For example permalink won’t redirect from http://site1.com/t/sample-topic/1234 to http://site2.com/t/sample-topic/1234. It will just return 404 not found when it can’t find the topic on first site.
I’ve tried creating permalinks like following: Permalink.create(url: '/t/sample-topic/1234', external_url: 'http://site2.com/t/sample-topic/1234')
Any workaround to get permalink work for internal urls?
My blog website is based on WordPress and the commenting is currently powered by Disqus platform.
I do plan to start a community based on Discourse and I am wondering if it is possible to change the commenting in such a way that only registered community members are able to comment on a story and what would that entail?
Essentially, in order to comment under a blog post, people would require a registered account with Discourse forum installation.
For quite some time now, viewing the content of posts hidden by the community has required two clicks.
Steps to reproduce:
Open any topic with a hidden posts.
Click View hidden post.
Wait a second or two.
Click View hidden post again.
Expected results:
After step , a spinner appears and the post is shown after a short delay.
Actual results:
Nothing appears to happen after step . Step immediately reveals the content.
Bonus question: What’s up with this post? It was hidden when I started writing this post, and @Muiran edited it. Now, it has an edit icon , but opening the revision history tries to load the URL https://meta.discourse.org/posts/341011/revisions/latest.json?_=1508481978037 which 404s, leaving the history empty.
I have a community DataGirls, want to set up Discourse for Q&A and continuous learning after our regular data analytics course, should I use the cloud version, any access delay issue for users in China? or should i install Discourse on a China hosted cloud server?
Any experience in hosting Discourse for China users?
Looking at the HTML source, it converts the mp4 link to a <video width="100%" height="100%"> tag; if I remove the width/height parameters, the video displays as expected.
As a side note, I highly encourage everyone to use mp4 over gif:
it’s way smaller (for this example, mp4 = 141 KB, gif = 3200 KB)

I’m debating disabling uploads in general, and forcing people to only share links from trusted sources similar to reddit’s approach. Do you guys have any philosophies on this?
Once a user suspended, the ideal scenario would be to redirect him to a page like “Your account is currently suspended until …”.
Currently, suspended users cause an infinite loop:
Discourse redirects the user to the login page (normal).
Then the Login page redirects the user to Discourse and normally he should see an error or our community main page…
However if the user is suspended, then Discourse will redirect again the user to the login page.
As the user is already logged in, he will be redirected to discourse
And so on… In the end, it goes back and forward from the login server to discourse until the browser decides to raise an exception (Too many redirections…).
We have a number of independent groups in our Discourse who shouldn’t have visibility of members in other groups.
I’ve created categories for each group to which only they have access/visibility, which works fine. However, when users post or reply to a topic they can still use @mentions to include any other user in the community.
Is it possible to block this so a user can only @mention other users in their group(s)?
when switching to a new phone i realized, that i’m no longer able to add community.openhab.org in the Android app (Error message: “community.openhab.org was not found!”). I know this worked before, because i used the Android app on my old phone and this was my preferred way accessing this community. The output of curl shows, that http is redirected to https, so this is not the cause…
