Consider the typical sections of a daily newspaper: Arts, Sports, Business, Travel, Local, and World. Any given article belongs to just one of those sections, and the content in each section is quite different, such that some people, for example, may only ever read the Sports or Business sections. These are what we call categories.…

We’re on the hosted instance plentymarkets.com with version Discourse 1.9.0.beta13 - https://github.com/discourse/discourse version e600fb79b3c3eb228f5ee7bf8674016964141bd0

Any help would be appreciated :slight_smile:

Groups no longer listed as participating in personal messages?

I just updated to latest and noticed that groups no longer are listed as participants in personal messages they are in. Is this an intentional change? Did it change now or earlier and I didn’t notice it before?

It worries me because I have just started using group inboxes to include moderators in personal messages with new members and members who download resources from our website. The only way to tell they have access is that it’s in the group inbox, not when reading the message itself. When I try to invite that group, thinking moderators are not in the conversation, I get an error - see screenshot.

Here’s a screenshot of an example message that is in the moderators inbox but does not indicate the moderators are in the conversation:

I’m running v1.9.0.beta13 +52 that I upgraded yesterday. This morning, I got a PM about 7 flags waiting to be handled. These are posts are all old posts that were flagged (all custom flags) by none other than @downey (although I don’t think it’s his fault).

When I agree with the flag, I get a generic 500 error. When I disagree with the flag and I refresh, the flag comes back. I don’t see anything unusual (or related in the logs).

BBPress Import on Hosted Discourse

Importing from BBPress and other forums seems to be something you can only do with a self-hosted Discourse. Is it possible to do the import locally and then import this into a hosted account? We want to migrate a few forums but we don’t want to handle hosting.

Historically, when I added a tag I’d see the list and then be able to arrow up/down to choose one (and it would highlight). i don’t see that anymore so my up/down actions are guesses as to which one i’m choosing.

I’ve using v1.9.0.beta13 +62.

Bootstrap Columns

Hello,

This seems rather basic, but is there a different implementation to use bootstrap css in Discourse? The code below is standard bootstrap to make two columns in a row, but within discourse this does not make two rows. When I inspect the elements I notice that row has css, but the col classes have no css. I notice that the col classes are used elsewhere, how can I get the standard bootstrap column system?

EDIT: code formatting

<div class="row">

  <div class="col-sm-6">

  </div>

  <div class="col-sm-6">

  </div>

Multiple error 500 Discourse InvalidAccess in default_current_user_provider.rb

@Julian_Somoza wrote:

Hi!

I start to have a lot of 500 errors (Discourse InvalidAccess) in my installation and try upgrading, downgrading, backuping, etc… The only way to solve the problem was editing the file /var/www/discourse/lib/auth/default_current_user_provider.rb. Modifying the line

limiter = RateLimiter.new(nil, "cookie_auth_#{request.ip}", COOKIE_ATTEMPTS_PER_MIN ,60)

By

limiter = RateLimiter.new(nil, "cookie_auth_#{request.ip}", COOKIE_ATTEMPTS_PER_MIN ,0)

Anybody know what to do this line?

Thanks in advance!

Improve sidekiq statistics

@Trash wrote:

Lately I seem to have some problems with sidekiq jobs.
As on sidekiq I can not see the logs of failed processes it is always a little mystery to understand what did not work.
For example, looking on the dashboard and set the stats for 6 months I can see this graphic:

The chart tends to rise steadily and after about 20000 processes it seems to reset and start over again.

So I was looking for github if there was some update-plugin-something to implement the sidekiq interface and I found this GitHub - davydovanton/sidekiq-statistic: See statistic about your workers.

Has anyone already tested it?

(damned keyboard shortcuts, I saved the post before finishing writing :roll_eyes:)

Confused using categories

@testingsoftware wrote:

Hi all,

We have migrated a forum from vBuletin to Discourse. Our forum has many categories with subcategories.
The main categories themselves have some description but the subcategories don’t need any description as the title is self explanatory. Lets say, category: CHAIRS - description: let discuss what type of joins you use to build your chairs.- subcategory: armchair - subcategory: reclining chairs, etc.

Since in Discourse the Description of the category is actually a topic, I found myself having to fill a topic that is not required and stays floating around inside that category.
Is there a way of getting rid of this? of not having a “about the xxx category” topic?

Thanks.

Thanks to discourse

Discourse is my all top favorite forum, why because of the discourse team, without all their contributions and dedication to expanding the forum, I would of never gotten this far without them, I started off new and unfamiliar with the software, now I’m slowly learning on how to create one on my own in a local environment, I would like to thank everyone on the discourse team for getting me to where I am now. By looking up basic topics on how to change settings, wiki, etc, to more difficult like email, installing discourse, etc. again thanks. if any co-founder would take a second of their time to answer a few questions, (optional) it would be greatly appreciated :slight_smile:

What made you want to create a open source platform like discourse?

Did you think creating a open source community would benefit you to expand and make lots of money, because maintaining a large forum, writing code, etc is alot of work

Do you feel proud in creating a large expanding community of large users and helping them out?

What type of equipment did you first use to write the code? Who wrote the first code?

How many users (customers) have you gained from the year 2015 to now! Did that help you gain interest in developing more in your product.

I noticed @codinghorror used to previously maintain stack overflow, what made you want to move over to discourse more? Did that benefit you?

Thank you for your cooperation :slight_smile:

Is there a quick method to clone categories and groups?

@schungx wrote:

Due to the particular implementation of Discourse security, I am forced to open up lots of categories and lots of groups.

Each time I have to manually set all the settings for each category and each new group, and all those settings are basically the same. So much so that I keep a “cheat sheet” of sorts to help me remember which setting to set to what.

Is there a quick Rails command to clone a category and/or group? Of course the names will need to be different, but copy all other settings? Basic settings will be enough; things like group membership and/or security settings will be different anyway.

Settings for a temporary droplet resize on DO

@omarfilip wrote:

I’m experimenting with importing a phpBB forum and merging it with another imported forum. Each time I run the phpBB import it takes about 3 hours. I’d like to speed things up a bit.

My Discourse instance was installed according to the instructions on a 2GB/2 CPU instance.

I resized the DO droplet temporarily to 32GB/12 CPU, increased workers to 10 and db_shared_buffers to 8GB in app.yml, and rebuilt the app, but there was no increase in performance - the import took about the same time.

What settings do I need to adjust to take advantage of the bigger droplet?
