Topic Titles without posts in the body for Reddit-style voting

@aaronkaro wrote:

I am trying to recreate a site I ran in the late aughts in which users posted funny thoughts and the best ones were voted on. Reddit-esque, but text only. The closest way I can see to duplicate this on Discourse would be for users to post Topic Titles, without any actual body of the post. In other words, the Topic Title would be the funny thought, they all would show up on the homepage, and users could like and comment on each one. I’m not sure if that’s possible though. One workaround I’ve tried is setting max post length to 0. But that returns an error because the post can’t be empty. Is it possible to configure Discourse in a way that approximates what I am trying to do? Thank you!!

Gender and translations

English is a pretty equal gender when it comes to gender. The software can say “You’re now fully licensed!” and nobody feels excluded.

Translate that string (and many others) into the majority of languages out there, and you are likely to encounter a gender problem, basically treating women as men. i18n practices have solved this problem a long time ago, by introducing gender variables in strings and by allowing users to define how they want be addressed gender-wise in their user preferences.

Unless I am missing something, this gender-friendly i18n hasn’t been implemented in Discourse. Has this problem been discussed? Are there any plans to solve it?

Just curious about how the business of discourse is doing and what the plans at a super-high level are for world domination (or something equally as cool).

Not looking for revenue figures, but, I was just curious about the state of the union, sotospeak, and organizational-type things outside of big 2.0 release(s)

Diacritics and search

@quimgil wrote:

Is it possible that Discourse’s search engine doesn’t know about fuzzy search with diacritics?

Diacritics are glyphs added to letters in many languages (notably not in English, except when borrowing foreign words and even then). Speakers of languages with diacritics expect search engines to basically ignore them (i.e. searching for “Mexico” or “México” provides the same results).

In Discourse, diacritics seem to be critical: :wink:

Languages with diacritics use them everywhere, but then their speakers are often lazy or wrong using them. The difference between finding the content you are looking for or not is huge.

I Discourse using an own search engine or embedding an existing one i.e. Elasticsearch? In any case, hopefully there is a library or something that Discourse developers could use to integrate diacritics fuzziness in search?

Problem with removing users from message

Imagine this scenario:
I’ve sent PM to one from team group
that person invited team group
That message will be shown in team group and in PM of that person. this is OK.
after inviting of group, that person isn’t shown in invite box of message so he can’t remove himself from that message.

Q: what actions are required for removing message from PM in such secnario? you can’t remove yourself from message because you isn’t shown in invited persons anymore.

discourse is updated almost daily

P.S.This scenario is based on the real facts :slight_smile:

I just noticed how Quora asks me to vote anonymously:

I think these votes are used somehow to rank questions and answers. What’s more interesting is how they choose for which answers to show this widget. To me it looks random, but I guess it is not.

Not sure if this idea is worth any effort, and how it can improve Discourse’s Search function, so just putting it here in case someone comes up with any ideas about it.

Best practices for setting up the staff like weight

@meglio wrote:

In Discourse, there is a setting: staff like weight

It makes likes from mods/admins more important, i.e. weight more.

I assume it affects user / topic / post ranking.

The default value is 3. Now, is there any best practices for this weight depending on:

  • the community size
  • the average daily likes from regular users
  • the total number of topics / messages

Any ideas?

What’s your practice?

What would you like done? Luna (www.getluna.org) is based on FluxBB. An import tool between Luna 2.0.7 and Discourse would be helpful to those of us who trying to decide how to escape the dark side of this particular hell-moon.

When do you need it done? Next couple of weeks

What is your budget, in $ USD Rather than pay for someone to run a custom import I would rather pay to have someone make a generally usefull tool. @vinothkannans or someone else what would a reasonable fee be?

Dark Theme Mobile Issues

I performed a manual install of Discourse yesterday on a fresh DO droplet. On the latest version of Chrome on Android, I noticed that nearly everything from the user login, to post titles, search, and the admin area all now have white text boxes. When a user enters text in those boxes it is barely readable from being so light. This is not occurring on desktop. I have replicated the issue on another new site I built and here on meta.

Suggestion: watched category auto-set when added to group

It would be helpful if there was a setting when setting up a Group that let me set a Category that should be watched for any User that is added to the group.

We are a non-profit using Discourse to manage volunteers groups (and replacing mailing lists). When a person volunteers to join a group it would be easier if the category dedicated to discussion for that group started automatically notifying her of new activity. She can un-watch it if she wants, of-course, but it gets her started easier in the group flow.

How to configure reply-to address for digest emails?

@chanceymathews wrote:

Hello,

How do I configure the from or reply-to address for digest emails? I would like to set it to our general support address so if a user accidentally replies to a digest email it doesn’t just go to the void.

The only option I can find is “alternative reply by email addresses” but that is for the reply-by-email feature.

I’m likely missing something obvious, but I can’t find what I’m looking for in any of the settings or old forum posts. If someone can point me in the right direction that would be great.

Thanks!

Redis port already taken

This should be simple, but I cannot find it.

Does anyone know where I can change the Redis port for the Redis standalone server in the image with Discourse?

I keep rebuilding it and getting the port is already taken, but if I leave it like that, Discourse breaks itself and stops, becoming 100% non-responsive, deleting the errors and logs by itself.

Link warning outside of forums

It would be great to have a feature such as warning users to a link that’ll take them outside of the original domain or forums for safety reasons, also where admins can mark the link as safe so it’ll have a checkmark by it meaning it’s verified by the forum administrators. Or blacklisting specific links so that users cannot post the restricted link. This was just an idea, thanks for reading!
