How to set set_real_ip_from for discourse
@parisa wrote:
I want to do something like this in discourse:
set_real_ip_from 127.0.0.1; set_real_ip_from 1.2.3.4; real_ip_header X-Forwarded-For; real_ip_recursive on;
Normally I would do it in an nginx.conf file. However with discourse, I don’t know what to do. Can someone help me?

V1.9 Not displaying correctly (Missing CSS?)
@Major wrote:
Fresh install following the 30 minute guide, all went well til I saw the homepage.
I am unsure if I’ve missed a step or something is amiss, Issue has occurred since the first build, I recently rebuilt the container earlier to include the cloudflare template + HTTPS.
I’ve experimented with a few custom CSS templates I’ve found littered about but none really fix the issue. Is there something I can do or repeat to fix it?
Also occurs with the Dark theme.

OneBox doesn't render boxes for Phabricator URLs
@quimgil wrote:
OneBox is not processing Phabricator URLs. Can you help figuring out whether the fix belongs more to OneBox or Phabricator, please? FWIW the Phabricator project itself is using Discourse.
Examples:
A project repository

Embedding Image URL with Two Periods Doesn't Work
@Berto wrote:
I just tried embedding this image on my forum:
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/71AsuBS91OL.SL1500.jpg
Good ol’ Amazon and their weird file names.
In the perfect world, the auto-embed should notice that this is a filename and we’re not trying to italicize those underscore parts.
Also couldn’t upload it via the upload tool, same situation. Not sure if worth the effort to fix, can always post it to imgur or something first (which is what I did), just FYI

PNG converted to JPG? :(
@Patrick_David wrote:
Hi all!
I’m back. Once before we fixed some problems we had with metadata being stripped from uploaded images.
Normally this wouldn’t be a problem, but we have a wonderful photography-oriented community over at discuss.pixls.us that relies on that metadata being available for various reasons. @zogstrip fixed it super-fast which was awesome!
Now, however, we have a slightly different problem. While working out issues around bit-depths and color-management we’ve stumbled upon a nasty showstopper for us. PNG files are getting converted to JPG files!
Note, this isn’t a problem for thumbnails/resized/lightboxed versions of an image - I understand why that would be done and think it’s a great idea. The problem is that the original .PNG image is converted to .JPG!
Is there any way to just leave the uploaded (original) image alone and not convert to jpg? As an example, here is this file, uploaded to meta:
You can see if you try to download the original image again, that it’s been converted to a JPG.

Mandrillapp SMTP username brings this error
@TomPeace wrote:
I use Mandrillapp for my websites and mail delivery. All of them work fine but when I want to use the smtp username with Discourse, it gives me this error:
./discourse-setup: line 383: [: too many arguments
Probably the reason is that my username consists from three words. It’s like ‘This Is Username’. However, how am I supposed to install Discourse if such a username is not supported? All of my other websites & forums work fine with this. Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

Finding people to share a Discourse instance with
@Seanny123 wrote:
I have a blog. It’s not very good and it doesn’t have a ton of readers, but I’d still rather use Discourse than Disqus for a comment section. However, if it feels arrogant/wasteful/unsustainable to use a whole Discourse instance for myself. It would be nice to share an instance with someone with similar interests. By “share” I mean that all the bloggers link to a post in the instance for their comment section, but each blogger maintains their own Discourse site.
Consequently, I propose a website (or a Discourse instance?) dedicated to finding people to share instances with as a funnel for potential customers for the platform.
Being a pretty novice UX/UI person, I’m not sure what the flow for this application would be, but it seems pretty similar to a dating site:
- Let someone tag their interests for easy searching/matching with others.
- Let them create a profile describing themselves, as well as a curated list of 5 of their blog posts demonstrating their style/interests.
Being an amateur full-stack web-dev person, I’m not sure how hard this would be to make. It feels like a simple Rails CRUD app, but I might be wrong. I think all you need is:
- Basic database saving user data
- Front-end for each profile
- Front-end for searching/browsing profiles
- I’m assuming the people interested in each other can just use email for contact?
Being an even worse biz-dev person, I have no idea if this is worth it to build/host. Some things to consider:
- How many people want to use Discourse as comments for their blogs?
- How often do blogs have similar themes that would enable sharing of a Discourse instance to be beneficial?
- Would a bunch of little Discourse instances be just a profitable/meaningful as big Discourse instances paid by large companies?
- Alternatively, if Discourse itself doesn’t want to invest time/resources to create this site, is there possibility for some sort of referral program? I’m not even clear how those work and if that would viable for Discourse.

Contest Mode - Random topic list sort
@Falco wrote:
On reddit, when you want to to capture suggestions and wanna minimize bias they provide “Contest Mode”:
this thread is in contest mode - contest mode randomizes comment sorting, hides scores, and collapses replies by default. Source
Different from reddit, we would do this at category level, randomizing topic sorting in a category and hiding votes.
After the contest is over, the admin can revert the order to votes.

'Return to Home/Latest' button at the end of each thread?
@IFD wrote:
I don’t know if I am the only one, or if I might have missed a feature, but I find that after reaching the end of a thread, if I didn’t open it in a new tab, there is no quick way to go back to the home page/Latest page.
For ‘There are 3 unread and 4 new topics remaining, or browse other topics in …’ at the bottom of threads, at least on the Discourse website that I participate in, this doesn’t allow you to go back to the Latest page—only Unread, New and the category the thread was in.
There is also the situation where (although not the case for Meta Discourse) the home page is the Categories page, instead of the Latest page. Therefore, having a Latest page button/link would be important for websites structured this way.
You can also click on the thread title, of which you can then click the header, but it is quite a lot of steps for a task that is repeated so often (and websites with Categories as the home page have the added step of clicking on the top Latest button). At the moment, I have found a workaround outside of Discourse by adding a bookmark to the bookmarks bar in Safari. However, having a Return to Home/Latest button at the end of each thread would be important.

RuntimeError in convert_to_jpeg! when processing incoming email
@LeoMcA wrote:
Continuing the discussion from Send rejection email for unrecognised errors:
We just hit this very same error again, twice, (which we noticed thanks to the unrecognised error rejection email), so now I feel we’re in bug territory.
Unrecognized error type (RuntimeError: ) when processing incoming email Backtrace: /var/www/discourse/lib/discourse.rb:27:in `execute_command' /var/www/discourse/lib/upload_creator.rb:137:in `convert_to_jpeg!' /var/www/discourse/lib/upload_creator.rb:44:in `block in create_for' /var/www/discourse/lib/distributed_mutex.rb:21:in `synchronize' /var/www/discourse/lib/distributed_mutex.rb:5:in `synchronize' /var/www/discourse/lib/upload_creator.rb:36:in `create_for' /var/www/discourse/lib/email/receiver.rb:637:in `block in add_attachments' /var/www/discourse/lib/email/receiver.rb:630:in `each' /var/www/discourse/lib/email/receiver.rb:630:in `add_attachments' /var/www/discourse/lib/email/receiver.rb:624:in `create_post_with_attachments'
Last time this happened, neither I nor @zogstrip were able to recreate the error with the same email. @zogstrip do you want to try again with the couple of emails which caused it this time?
If you’re not able to, it unfortunately seems like we have no repro steps aside from waiting for it to happen again.
From my reading of the code, the
convert
command is failing in some way, but outputting nothing at all tostderr
.Might we also want to log
stdout
when a command doesn’t execute successfully? Aside from that, I’m not sure there’s anything additional we can do to make the logs more descriptive in this case.
