Hello,

I would like to use Discourse for an educational group programm. For that, it needs to be possible that everybody entering the forum can be added to all private groups, regardless of the trust level.

Is that possible?

Thank you! :slight_smile:

Changing the order of the groups of a user does not change the title

@Trash wrote:

Continuing the discussion from Add option to set primary group if no current primary group:

With the latest update I saw that this feature was introduced.

The problem is that if you change the order of the groups, the user’s title does not change but remains the one of the first group he entered.

In my case I have 2 users that initially entered the alpha_tester group. After some days they made donations to Patreon and were automatically added to the supporter group.

Via admin panel I changed manually the group:

Now I can see that their primary groups is supporter but the title still remains alpha_tester:

For testing I changed the supporter group to primary group (originally it is not) to see if this was the problem.

Since I have moved users from a group to another (primary or not) without any problem until yesterday’s update, I assume that the last change introduced has created a possible bug.

Restrict who you can PM based on Groups

@Valya_Barboy wrote:

Hi Discourse Community!

We’re using groups and categories to restrict what users can see/which forums they can participate in. This is mostly for privacy reasons/so that people aren’t inundated with topics that do not apply to them.

However, we’ve noticed that when you @mention people, or when you private message them, you can actually tag (or reach out to) any user on the platform. With the @mention, you get a warning saying that you’re mentioning someone who doesn’t have access, which is super helpful. However, for private messages, it’s very hard to find the correct person to reach out to. Often people have very similar names/usernames, and we’ve had problems of people messaging the wrong person without realizing it.

We were wondering if you have a solution for this use case. Our idea was to restrict who you can PM, allowing only staff + people in the same groups as you. Is this possible? Is there a different/better work around?

Thank you!

Attachments aren't included in first group PM post

Continuing the discussion from Allow all email attachments for group messages setting?:

Following up on the site setting Allow all email attachments for group messages

My question:

Would there be any reason why attachments are only getting processed in replies to a group-based PM, and are skipped/not processed in the initial post within the PM “topic”?

In other words, imagine non-registered email address user sends an email to group@discourse.example.org with a PDF attachment for the group to read.

  • Expected behavior: User staged, attachment appears in first post of the new PM topic and is downloadable. Attachments included in subsequent email replies to the PM topic also appear.
  • Actual behavior: User staged, attachment does not appear in first post of the new PM topic, but does appear in subsequent email replies to the PM topic also appear.

The allow all attachments for group messages site setting is enabled.

Number rating poll allows step (width) "0"

Hey there,

I hope, this is a unknown issue. Ich couldn’t find this here and it’s still in the sandbox.
It’s possible that the user can choose step “0” in the number rating poll GUI. When you’re doing that, it is possible (depends on browser and so on), that your device (PC) will lock up instantly (the cause is obviously, without seeing the code - it does not terminate?..). So you have to force shut-down and reboot. I think this option should be therefore forbidden. In the best case even the manual insert should be forbidden, too (note/warning, when you try to send post).

Thank you!

Some issue user profile when visiting through mobile

I was visiting my profile and thought to fill up my bio in the profile and there I saw some issues.

First, the bio box has an alignment issue.

Second, when I tried to select the date for Birthday date drop-down then the drop-down kept opening and closing in an instant. Along with opening and closing of drop-down the mobile keyboard also pops up and goes back. This thing went on going for every time I tried to select the date. And because of this I never got a chance to actually select any date.

I am using Moto G5 Plus with Android 7.0 and using Google Chrome (latest version).

My company has been using the free version of discourse since July, and we are looking to upgrade to one of the paid versions. WE have made significant changes to the design, and layout of our forum, and want to ensure that all these changes will be carried over when we are ready to upgrade. Will we have any issues transferring our changes? What will this process look like?

Thanks.

WP Discourse 1.5 Release

$

@Simon_Cossar wrote:

Version 1.5.1 of the plugin is now available in the WordPress plugin repository.

The biggest change will affect sites that have previously enabled the Create Discourse User on Login option. This option no longer logs users into Discourse when they log into WordPress. If it is selected, after logging into WordPress it runs a check to see if the user exists on Discourse. If the user doesn’t exist, a user is created through the API. If you would like to add a link to your WordPress site to allow users to login directly to Discourse, you need to create an SSO login link. Have a look at the Creating an SSO Login Link section of the WP Discourse Tips and Tricks topic to see how to do that.

If you have the Create Discourse User on Login option enabled, you should see a one-time notice telling you about this change.

Other changes include:

  • adding a warning to the SSO provider tab if the WordPress admin email doesn’t match an admin user on Discourse
  • adding some functions that can be used in themes or plugins for hooking into Discourse
    • get_discourse_user( $user_id, $match_by_email = false )
    • get_discourse_user_by_email( $email )
    • create_discourse_user( $user, $require_activation = true )
    • get_discourse_groups()
    • add_user_to_discourse_group( $user_id, $group_name, $force_update = false ) // force update fetches fresh groups data from Discourse
    • remove_user_from_discourse_group( $user_id, $group_name, $force_update = false )
    • get_discourse_stats()

These are all static functions. To call them you need to include the WPDiscourse\Utilities\Utilities namespace. For example, to get a Discourse user who has a WordPress id of 12, either by id, or by email you would call:

WPDiscourse\Utilities\Utilities::get_discourse_user( 12, true );

Later this week I will create a separate topic to document these functions and give some ideas about how they can be used with WordPress membership plugins.

Please let me know if you run into any issues with the latest update. As always, previous versions of the plugin are available at the bottom of this page.

How to measure active users?

How does everyone measure active/super active users? ie people who have logged in or commented in the past month, for example.

The dashboard tells me the number of visits and comments etc, but I don’t know how to chunk this down easily into actual users. We’ve got 1400 members on our community, but I’d like to know how many of those are engaging with it month on month.

Thanks,

Autism redesign/deployment

@ggstuart wrote:

Hi, I’m looking to set up a discourse forum for a community of autistic students and their parents/carers in the UK. We currently have no server and are open to either serving ourselves or outsourcing. I run another discourse forum but am not an expert on discourse and we might want to have a ‘supported’ deployment of some kind.

We want to work with the users to understand how we might adapt the look and feel of the vanilla discourse to better meet their specific needs. Also we would need our discourse branded to give it an identity. I assume this will not go beyond creating a custom stylesheet.

We may also need some custom tooling for integration of existing (or new) apps with discourse. For example, users may have a simple questionnaire app and we’d like them to be able to submit basic data and for this to automatically generate a forum post.

The project timing is under discussion but we expect it would not be until the spring. Possibly early summer.

In terms of budget, I was hoping to get an idea from you guys about how much to budget for these things. The basic pieces are:

  1. Forum setup/hosting
  2. Forum customisation/branding (theme?)
  3. Standardised, automated posting from an existing or new app (web/native?)

I get that number three is not well specified. I will have more information on this eventually. We are preparing a funding application right now and so I need to know how much to allocate and also, are there people here who are interested in such a project? We are hoping that the addition of an online place where the community can share experiences will have a positive effect.

So, what kind of cost are we looking at and are there people here who are interested?
