Can't restore a 20GB backup on a 60GB Digital Ocean instance (fresh Discourse install)

So, I have a ~20GB backup.

When I try to restore it in a fresh Discourse install on a 60GB DigitalOcean droplet, the UI freezes, and it ends up with the following situation:

df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
udev            2.0G     0  2.0G   0% /dev
tmpfs           396M   26M  370M   7% /run
/dev/vda1        58G   58G     0 100% /
tmpfs           2.0G     0  2.0G   0% /dev/shm
tmpfs           5.0M     0  5.0M   0% /run/lock
tmpfs           2.0G     0  2.0G   0% /sys/fs/cgroup
/dev/vda15      105M  3.4M  102M   4% /boot/efi
/dev/sda1       246G   25G  209G  11% /mnt/volume-fra1-01-part1
overlay          58G   58G     0 100% /var/lib/docker/overlay2/1b169d3fb316ed26072c13336a9b260add686b548d856f4765560637907b4efd/merged
shm              64M  4.0K   64M   1% /var/lib/docker/containers/37cfaddc5a5466550d7e0471b16b70a5a7b0659dfb7f3e8753dabb0b6d885127/shm
tmpfs           396M     0  396M   0% /run/user/0

The UI stuck at “CREATE INDEX…”.

My guess:
I remember Discourse first copying the backup file to the guest’s /tmp, then unzipping it, which literally means +20GB +20GB = +40GB files

Should not the backup file be unzipped somewhere in the backups folder directly (without copying to /tmp), as the backups folder can be mounted to a bigger drive. Also, what is the idea behind copying the backup file before unzipping it?

Discourse adds the class drop-down-visible to the <body> element when a drop-down is visible.

Screenshots here on meta:

No drop down:

drop down visible (hamburger menu):

This is a very handy class, but isn’t it supposed to be removed when the drop-down is no longer visible?

Here’s a screenshot after closing the hamburger menu above:

Note that the class drop-down-visible is still present.

The same happens with the notification drop-down and the search drop-down.

Allow tag creation with allow tag creation with a pre-finit format

I would like to know if it is possible to allow the creation of tags in some form such as serial number XX0000000000.

I don’t think it’s necessary to create all serial numbers directly (more than 10,000), but it makes searching much easier if the subjects are tag with the serial number.
So I would like to allow the user to create the number they need.

Is it possible and even more does that sound like a good idea to you ?

I know that there will be errors in temp to temp numbers but it’s not very important… it is more of a search functionality

What is a notification?

@mcwumbly wrote:

Suggestion: Add some language to the top of the notifications tab of the preferences page to briefly explain the nuances about what Discourse means by the word “notification”. A first attempt:

Below, control which kinds of events you’ll receive notifications and how you’ll receive them. You can also control the notification level for categories and tags here.

By default, notifications will first appear as an indicator above your avatar. You can also turn on desktop notifications if you want to be alerted when the app is open but not in focus. But if you’re not around, we’ll email you for the important ones.

In the various notification drop downs (like the one in the screenshot below), it may also be nice to link to the notifications preferences page to help people discover this.

Visit your notification preferences to refine how you receive notifications.

I did a little “hallway usability testing” yesterday. After showing someone the how they could subscribe as “Watching First Post” to the tag for the new weekly newsletter we’re piloting, I watched him click around various places to try and grok what these words in the dropdown really mean: “You will only be notified of the first post in each new topic in this tag”.

At first I thought he was confused about the differences between watching and tracking, etc. But after a minute or two I asked him to speak aloud about what he was doing as he was exploring the preferences pages.

In the end, what stood out to me was his statement that, “what I’m really to figure out is ‘what is a notification?’ Is that a desktop notification? an email? what does notification really mean?

I then pointed out this part of one of the pages he had clicked through (the Emails tab of the preferences page):

That helped to clarify, but he spent most of his time on the Notifications tab while exploring, which is what led me to suggest that we add this language to that tab.

Another observation is that he did not ever click on the nested Categories or Tags submenus under Notifications until I pointed them out, which is why I suggested also including links to them in the verbiage above.

Force remote image download after removing disabled domain

@bangarang wrote:

on my instance i have download remote images to local enabled, but listed one domain in disabled image download domains, so that every inline-images from that specific domain wasn’t pulled as a local copy. that is working great.

but now i want that the images from that domain should also be downloaded, including the old posts. therefore i removed the domain from disabled image download domains, changed download remote images max days old to 10000 and rebaked all the posts containing that domain. but the old posts still contain the remote image and not a local copy, regardless how the inline-image is embed (<img>, [img], just the url). no scheduled tasks in sidekiq after rebake.

but when im editing one of those posts manually and lets say alter the text, without touching the embedded image, the inline-image will be pulled as expected. but since there are a lot of those posts, manual editing is no option. any solution or workaround?

Setting groups on SSO

Looking at the documentation for SSO, it appears that the only way to modify user groups is to specify a set of groups to add or a set of groups to remove… is there any way to simply specify a set of groups that the user should be in, and let the system add/remove groups as necessary to match?

Moderator Shield Icon

@RobMeade wrote:

Quick question…

I noticed the little shield icon ages ago which appears next to someone who is a moderator, are there specific circumstances when this may change?

For example, I have both admin and moderator access, the latter being granted initially. Yet the little shield just states moderator, are admins more concealed?

I had a quick look at our other admins and they have other “titles” appearing next to them, and I note that when I check @sam here, his doesn’t have the little shield icon either, again, there is a specific title.

Just trying to work out the circumstances under which the shield icon is/is not displayed, and whether certain things override its usage.

Thanks in advance :slight_smile:

Issues using SSO in custom web app

$

@supernaturally wrote:

Potential issue for users on shared devices -

I’ve noticed that Discourse will not log out an authenticated user if a different user is attempting SSO in the same browser session, until that user physically clicks “logout” inside of Discourse’s dropdown menu (i.e. If Joe logs out of my web app, and Sally then logs into my web app…Sally will still enter Joe’s authenticated Discourse instance after SSO until Sally manually logs out from Discourse’s dropdown menu, at which point she is then authenticated back into Discourse under the correct account). Is this a Discourse issue? We can always use the API to logout a user, but that wouldn’t help in the event of a session timeout within my web app unless the Discourse session times out at the same time. Any ideas?
