Azure Blob Storage Plugin

@maja wrote:

discourse-azure-blob-storage :floppy_disk:

I have created the Azure Blob Storage plugin as part of my Outreachy internship with Discourse. It allows storing uploads into the Azure Blob storage.

Azure account

  1. If you don’t have an Azure account yet, create one for free
  2. In your Microsoft Azure portal, go to Storage account and add a new account - make sure to select Blob storage under Account kind
  3. Go over to your newly created storage account and find Containers in the settings. Add a container into which uploads should be stored and set the public access level to Blob.
  4. Find Access keys in the storage account settings to fill in later when configuring Discourse.

Discourse configuration

  1. Install the plugin with the help of instructions here: Install a Plugin
  2. Go to Admin Settings -> Plugins, fill in the storage account name, access key and container name (cdn is optional) and enable the plugin
  3. That’s it! Uploads should be stored into Azure Blob from now on.

Note: The plugin has yet to be thoroughly tested, I’d be happy if you give it a go and report any potential problems.

Docker manager 'old image' message is showing raw HTML

@David_Taylor wrote:

I’ve seen this mentioned a few times on Meta, but I can’t find a specific topic for it. If there is one, apologies!

When I visit /admin/upgrade the page looks like this:

Doing a “view source” reveals this:

<html><head></head><body>
<h2>You are running an old version of the Discourse image.</h2>
<p>
Upgrades via the web UI are disabled until you run the latest image.
</p>
<p>
To do so log in to your server using SSH and run:
</p>

<pre>
cd /var/discourse
git pull
./launcher rebuild app
</pre>
<p>
<a href='https://meta.discourse.org/t/how-do-i-update-my-docker-image-to-latest/23325'>More info on our support site</a>
</p>
</body>
</html>

So it looks like the HTML is being converted into html entities somewhere along the line…

Prevent "Reply Via Email" Sender From Getting Reply Via Email

@Antroden wrote:

If I reply to a topic via email (or start a topic via email in a category I am watching) I get an email notifying me of this action… This clutters up my email thread:

Email Thread:

  • My Topic
  • Discourse repeats my topic
  • User 1 Reply
  • User 2 Reply
  • My Reply
  • Discourse Repeats My Reply

I can see the value of getting feedback, especially when I first start a topic (so I can get the unique reply-to code if I want to add to to my original topic), but getting each reply echoed back to me seems redundant.

Any way to turn this off?

Minimum Requirements vs. competitors

@tsaukpaetra wrote:

I’ve seen it rehashed in a few topics, but I wanted to make sure I have my understanding is correct on this.

I’d like to host Discourse as the modern forum frontend for a (very small) discussion board for my YouTube channel (we have a Discord server, but endless walls of text and images gets really messy after a while).

I really like the UI of Discourse and would like to try installing it to try it out, but the docs mention 1 Gb being a minimum (and with that size swapping is mandatory). I really don’t have the money to spare (especially not with the YouTube adsense drama cutting everyone off) and can’t afford an extra $20/mo for an idea.

I’ve seen other forums out there that try to more or less emulate what Discourse is doing but with smaller requirements (much better!) like NodeBB with fewer required software packages and the memory requirement is 512Mb (apparently without needing swap? Docs don’t really say), or even Flarum (doesn’t even mention a memory requirement, though since it’s only PHP+Mysql I can assume it would run fine in way under 512 Mb).

I know, obviously getting a super-beefy host with gigarams and megabits would be preferred, but I just don’t have the cash on hand for this.

Am I barking up the wrong tree looking to have the best experience on a 512 Mb (or less) server? Or does someone know a good host I can use for $5 or less that can adequately run Discourse?

[PAID] Plugin to hide few elements just from the moderators using CSS

@nixie wrote:

I want a plugin created.

I would like to hide few elements in the site from “just” the moderators using CSS.

I have the required CSS code with me that hides some elements in the site.
If I use it in the CSS customisation section, it applies to all users.
But I want it applicable only to the moderators in the site.

So, I’m guessing this will require a plugin.

If anyone is interested in taking this up, please contact me by sending me your email address - and then we can discuss about it in email. Also, please reply here as well when you contact me - this is to ensure that the thread is up-to-date. And once I select someone for this job, I will be posting about it here.
(as per the new marketplace rules)

For task 1) 100 USD

For task 2) no budget assigned, will be evaluated in near future.

How can I put H1 tags on a few missing pages please

@Jerry_Hughes wrote:

I’ve read through a lot of other posts so far but none seem to really rectify the issue of pages I want to include a H1 tag.

We have a fairly big Ecommerce website and it’s just these last 4 pages out of about 20,000+ that don’t have a H1 tag and the weekly errors I keep seeing would be lovely to just, vanish…

https://forum.novatech.co.uk/ - landing/home page of the forum
https://forum.novatech.co.uk/categories

and also my login and about pages which I’ll link in a reply to this as I can’t add more than 2 links yet heh

These are the last 4 pages I’m struggling to find a way of adding a H1 tag to, does anyone have any tips on how to fix these 4 pages please?

Thanks a lot,

Jerry

Limit number of latest posts on homepage

Hello :wave:

I’m using the Category & Latest view in my Community, and we’ve currently got 5 category and 20 ‘latest’ posts. So the columns look a little bit weird (one much longer than the other).

Is there a way to limit the latest column? This thread suggests topics per period in top summary should affect it, but it doesn’t seem to be having any effect…

Advice on best resource to teach novices to use the wiki feature

@David_Baker1 wrote:

I have a nonprofit membership community who are eager to use the Discourse features but are relative novices and won’t venture into trial and error mode to learn new things. If I can nudge them to try new features with a few links to meta howtos and short videos I can spark people to try things. My first features to try and promote are the wiki features.

Can anyone link to best meta topics or short videos that show novices how to succeed with wiki working in Discourse?

The 1.7 release notes mention that noreferrer was added. I don’t see it in the options or in the codebase anywhere.

I categorized this as support, because maybe i’m missing the config somewhere? But maybe it’s a bug?

SSO don't return to return_url after new user creation

@xagaba wrote:

I have a website that uses Discourse as a SSO provider.

I have a login button in my site that redirects to Discourse SSO with the return_url set,
if and existing user logined correctly, Discourse honors my return_url and returns to my website after validate the user.
But if it’s a new user that needs to Sign-up first, after creating the user and validating
his email address, the Discourse forum send the user to the forum instead of my site.
Any one know if this is possible to accomplish this ?

Emoji-Picker shows itself in an unoptimized Position

@gege wrote:

Video first:

Env:

OS: Win10
Browser: Google Chrome (plugins disabled)
Site: https://meta.discourse.org/u/{your user name here}/preferences/profile
reproducible: Yes

Description:

(I don’ t kown if it is intended to be.) I found that the position of emoji-picker of main composer in the past few days was fixed, but not in user’ s Profile . Moreover skincolor of emojis in the Picker-box showed itself in my case neither completely nor sticky. I changed Browser(Chrome) to Firefox and with non-plugins tried again, but issues still exsited. This problem should be fixed in the future.

I found this code clip in emoji.scss. This is common style for every emoji-picker both in main composer and bio-composer.

.emoji-picker {
  box-shadow: 0 1px 5px rgba(0,0,0,0.4);
  background-clip: padding-box;
  z-index: z("modal","content");
  position: fixed;
  display: none;
  flex-direction: row;
  height: 300px;
  border-radius: 3px;
  color: dark-light-choose(darken($primary, 40%), blend-primary-secondary(90%));
  background-color: $secondary;
  border: 1px solid dark-light-diff($primary, $secondary, 90%, -60%);
}

Give a try, but no joy:

I tried to change position: fixed; to position: absolute; but i failed. Everytime i clicked emoji-button, the inline-style was going to be inserted automatically.

I am not a developer, no idea how to solve it, so i report it to the ‘open air’. :sweat_smile:

Kind regards to discourse team and fans
happy coding!
