A really weird issue I’m having with only one of my several Discourse instances, and only one user so far. This makes me think it’s something unusual about that user, perhaps something that’s become misconfigured over time.

This instance is around 2.5 years old, and has been migrated quite recently from a Digital Ocean droplet to another VPS provider, the migration went seamlessly and was done via backup export/import.

I first noticed this issue happening before the migration, and it’s the same following the migration, suggesting there’s something about this user in the DB that is not quite right, maybe?

Here’s a screenshot. Nothing below the first line of the user profile is present. (It’s not just hidden, the HTML isn’t there at all)

In the console I get an Ember error, which might have something to do with it, although I really have no idea how to debug this any further.

As far as I can tell there’s nothing much different between this user’s User object and other similar users for whom the problem doesn’t happen.

Any ideas gratefully received.

mindless rambling

One idea was to put it in the category description excerpt, but that doesn’t display the image.

I suspect that the real answer is to connect to the category-name class and stick it in the main-link clearfix, uh, thingy.

  1. When you upload a file too big (bigger then " max attachment size kb" / " max image size kb") - you dont get a notification about that? I just got a blank field (also on this forum)… Why not info like “file too big”

When you upload a unsupportet file format (thats not on your “authorized extensions” list you get a warning

  1. is it possible to browse and administrate file uploads from the backend? Delete files uploaded to the forum…

Why?

  • It is more discoverable (not everyone knows to dig around in their preferences).
  • It’s more clear what the effect of my action is when it’s coupled to the action
  • It allows people to choose on a case-by-case basis

Handling uploaded videos

@twbartlett wrote:

We have a client who would like to upload video - but this could be any video and would need transcoding.

Discourse is clearly not a video hosting platform - so we were thinking about trying to involved a 3rd party transcoder, or possibly some sort of direct upload to Vimeo or similar after the user uploads the file.

Does this sound like a reasonable approach and any ideas on how this might be achieved?

I assume that a customised Onebox view may help somewhere?

Programmatically adding users when SSO is being used

$

@Philip_Colmer wrote:

We’ve got our internal copy of Discourse configured so that SSO has to be used, and it is connected to our LDAP server. That means that any member of staff can easily log on using their common username and password … but their account only gets created when they first log on.

There is some discussion internally about trying to elevate social interaction between staff but a lot of the staff are reluctant to do anything other than use email.

So, I’m trying to figure out how to solve the challenge by using Discourse. I’ve already figured out the actual email aspect of it (i.e. configuring Discourse so that categories have their own inbound email address) but I can see two challenges that I’m not sure how to solve:

  1. Ideally I’d like everyone to have an account on Discourse before they sign into Discourse. The reason for wanting this is so that if they email Discourse without having an account first, Discourse has the user’s full details rather than treating them as anonymous.

  2. I’d like everyone to be able to receive summary emails from Discourse so that they are aware of threads being created (even if they never visit Discourse) … but that also requires the account to exist.

Any suggestions on what I can do? Is there a way I can create accounts in Discourse programmatically so that they tie into SSO when people log on?

Thanks.

161:M 06 Feb 18:37:32.049 # WARNING overcommit_memory is set to 0! Background save may fail under low memory condition. To fix this issue add 'vm.overcommit_memory = 1' to /etc/sysctl.conf and then reboot or run the command 'sysctl vm.overcommit_memory=1' for this to take effect.
161:M 06 Feb 18:37:32.049 # WARNING you have Transparent Huge Pages (THP) support enabled in your kernel. This will create latency and memory usage issues with Redis. To fix this issue run the command 'echo never > /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/enabled' as root, and add it to your /etc/rc.local in order to retain the setting after a reboot. Redis must be restarted after THP is disabled.
