Question about max username length

@Philip_Colmer wrote:

In Usernames on top, lifting username length restrictions, there is a lengthy discussion about lifting the max username length restriction.

The first post gives an example of the length being increased to 40, but Usernames on top, lifting username length restrictions (post 25) says that it has been officially bumped from 15 to 20.

Is it safe to make it more than 20 characters? The reason I ask is because we’ve tied our Discourse implementation to our LDAP system for SSO, and we’re using the LDAP usernames as the Discourse usernames … and some of our users have got very long names, e.g. moorthy.baskaravenkatraman-sambamoorthy.

What is the maximum length that the system has been tested with? I don’t want to break Discourse by putting in a value that is too high …

Thanks.

I have questions about user ability and different trust levels. Given the basic trust level, can I, the user, contribute to conversations and everything within the page? Or, would my administrator need to up my trust level within the page?

Also, is there a way to get email notifications when users reply to a specific chain or conversation?

What to do when someone leaves the company?

@Philip_Colmer wrote:

With a Discourse setup that only allows SSO to a corporate infrastructure, what are the recommendations for what action to take when someone leaves?

As I understand it, the options would seem to be:

  • Deactivate the account
  • Suspend the account
  • Delete the account
  • Anonymise the account

Some of these are discussed in Suspend a user forever but one of those options - Deactivate the account - doesn’t seem to have a corresponding API call, unless I’m missing it?

I don’t want to delete the account because that would delete the corresponding posts? I don’t want to anonymise the account because that would lose the information as to who posted in the first place.

I could suspend but it looks like I would need to increase the suspend timeout.

Any thoughts on best practice for this scenario?

Thanks.

Hi there,

Ability to modify user email settings for group

@thirstforwine wrote:

It would be REALLY useful if there was a way to change certain default settings for groups of users.

I have a number of ‘Absent Friends’ who are those members who joined some months ago and either never re-visited or did for a while but then stopped.

I have the default setting for community Activity Summary emails set to 3-days as a general rule because I think this is a good balance for members who may use the site irregularly but are engaged.

However, if you do not visit at all, then you very quickly accumulate a very large volume of emails from a community that you are not engaged with, and therefore you are pushed into unsubscribing entirely (since you are probably not aware of, or interested in, editing your preferences).

It would be better for me to either switch long term Absent Friends to a weekly or monthly reminder, or to switch them to a different mailer entirely aimed at engaging them with the community as a whole rather than with specific threads.

Does anyone have any ideas for a work-around that does not involve me impersonating each member individually to make these changes? Do you agree it would be a useful tool for Community Managers?

Long Profile Link Bug

I know this is kind of silly, but recently it was found out that you can put these long sentences with periods in between the words and it will count as a link, and these can be very long.

I mean it doesn’t really matter but it will make everything look a bit more tidy to just put a few periods… if it is longer that the player card. Or limit the link characters.

Thank you.

Previously selected user themes can override allowed themes

@pfaffman wrote:

On Discourse 1.9.2 (stable) if there exists a theme “A” that gets saved as a user’s default theme and then you create a theme “B” and make theme “A” not selectable by users, people who have selected theme A still get theme A.

And if theme B is the only available theme, then there is no selector on /my/preferences/interface to be able to select theme B.

This automatic search feature generated when you create a topic is very helpful for preventing repeat threads, but I feel like it could be expanded upon. It only seems to show 4-5 threads at a time, and doesn’t have a way to show more than that. Have you thought of adding a “more” button underneath to pull up ALL the threads, or to enable it to open a separate window that auto-searches the thread title? Obviously you could still search the old fashioned way but the whole point of this feature is to have it for people who DON’T search, so I feel like the easier for them to see similar threads, the better.

FYI, I DID use the search feature before posting this, and found multiple threads about improving the similar topic generator. None of them seem to mention the feature I’m asking for though, it’s mostly about search algorithms from what I can tell.

Force_https link in admin warning does not reset the "show overriden only" checkbox

This is a fairly minor issue, but you may still want to fix it.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Go to “settings” and check the “show overriden settings only” checkbox.
  2. Enable https.
  3. Wait for the warning to appear in admin panel (see image above)
  4. Click on the force_https link
  5. A settings page is opened, but force_https setting is not found – because the “overriden only” checkbox is still ON.

Basically, the link should set the checkbox off, e.g. via a URL parameter.

It is possible to add invalid menu items to the top_menu setting. If an invalid item is the first item in the SiteSetting.top_menu list, the site will broken in a way that can’t be fixed through the UI.

I’m not sure if there’s ever a reason to be able to add custom menu items to the top_menu list.

Avatars not showing after import

$

@fhe wrote:

I’m currently trying to import from IPB using a local dev environment on macOS without any virtualization.

I’m importing avatars via

upload = create_upload(user.id, img_path, File.basename(img_path))
if upload && upload.persisted?
    user.create_user_avatar
    user.user_avatar.update(custom_upload_id: upload.id)
    user.update(uploaded_avatar_id: upload.id)
else
    puts "Error: Upload did not persist #{img_path}!"
end

which creates the upload, creates the user_avatar and updates the uploaded_avatar_id for the user. However, the avatars are not showing after I import the user and after Sidekiq has processed all tasks.

The uploaded file also exists in the file system at
discourse/public/uploads/default/original/1X/a164bb6a13a258a27996f117c21d58ceb9ae8a52.png
and is referenced as
http://localhost:3000/user_avatar/localhost/florian/64/2_1.png
http://localhost:3000/user_avatar/localhost/florian/240/2_1.png

Any ideas on how to find more information on why the avatars are not showing?

The "join multiple replies" notice should not show when you add a whisper after a public reply

@meglio wrote:

I sometimes write a public reply, then assign a topic to a mod, then add another hidden reply (whisper).

When editing the whisper, it shows me the notice saying it’s better to write one single reply instead of multiple short consecutive replies. It looks like when in whisper mode this notice makes little sense?

A possible lowest-priority candidate for improvement.
