We have mailing list mode enabled for all the users in our forum. But when a user unsubscribes from a certain topic they are still getting notifications. Is it possible to make the system honor the unsubscribe user preference?

Mailing List Mode - Not sending to more than just a couple of users

@merefield wrote:

Guys,

I’ve noticed that if you set both:

  • Email Digests
  • Mailing List Mode

to TRUE for every user via the rails console, if you look at the email log in Admin you see a mix of mailing_list and digest emails. Some users get a new email per post, whilst others seem to receive a complete digest.

Is this expected?

I’m wondering if this is somehow related to when a user last visited the site?

Thanks!

I redownloaded my discourse app to my iphone for reasons not worth going into here. I then went to log into my forum and got this message.

I am thinking I need to contact discoursehosting about this as they host my forum.

Is that correct? Is there anything I am missing here?

FYI the rest of the website is wordpress hosted with bluehost.

Thanks.

See what categories new users (& other trust levels) post in most

Is there a way to see which categories are most used by users that belong to a certain trust level?
I’d especially be interested in what categories new users are most likely to start a topic in, but also where they post in general as well as how other trust levels behave.
Posts and topics of e.g. regular users from before they ranked up should either not be counted at all or count for prior trust levels.

My theory is that new users are most likely to post (and especially start topics) in categories where you get help with something, whereas regular users will use categories for deep discussions more often.

Integrating Discourse With Patreon

There is another old thread with a similar title but no one seems to be able to help me there and I’m getting desperate! I hope someone can help me.

(This is the thread I found that had several steps re how to integrate the two but I have had questions and no one seems able to help me. Configuring Patreon integration with Discourse)

I have created my Discourse forum. I have created the Client and gotten my API Keys from Patreon, and I get to the “Configuring Discourse” step and put all the api keys into the form but they do NOT provide a “Patreon Webhook Secret,” it’s not listed with the API keys that are provided? Where do you get that? And I’m not sure what to put for the “Patreon Creator Discourse Username” because in my discourse forum settings I am simply listed as “Admin.” Please help me, I’m about to lose my mind here and I have to get this up.

Thank you.

Moderators -- how regular members know who they are and how they become a moderator

We haven’t launched the forum yet and I am trying to figure out how regular members find moderators easily if they need to contact them about something that interests or concerns them. What is the easiest way for members to find moderators?

Also, does admin assign members as moderators exclusively or can a member earn through trust levels the role of moderator in the forum?

Thanks.

I had a user demoted from TL3 to TL2 and he mentioned not receiving a notification or PM about the demotion. Is this by design, and if so, are there any plans to add a PM or notification about the demotion, maybe even specifying which of the requirements dipped below the necessary levels?

Running v1.8.8

Displaying the forum name

I want to display our forum name to the right of the square company logo that appears at the top left.

Other sites do this, including this Meta forum (with the Discourse name shown at the top).

How?

I’m hoping for an answer that uses CSS customisation, rather than a plug-in.

List newly added tags in daily digest (and search for them)

@dnsmichi wrote:

Hi,

next to my monitoring-portal.org platform we’re also test-driving Discourse as internal discussion and knowledge exchange at work (more blogging on that soon). The requirements are somewhat different, there’s a lot of tech people involved who do not not read every hour, but they rely on the daily digest for example. And they have different ways of organising their interests, e.g. based on specific tags only.

One thing which came up was the question if it would be possible to list new categories and tags (tags are the most important) inside this daily digest. Categories are static, but tags are freely assignable by any user as everyone is on trust level 4 already.

A similar approach for getting new “search” results is probably found in this plugin:

Yet I am wondering if there is a simple way to extract a unified diff from day-to-day between tags. Or to have a snapshot every midnight, and compare against that after 24h. Maybe it already is builtin, and could be used as function call/variable inside the digest mail. If not, any pointer on a possible plugin implementation is highly appreciated :slight_smile:

It might also be a nice addition to the saved searches plugin, but I am not really sure about it. A search for “new tags added in the past 24h” doesn’t seem to be possible yet. Still, it would probably be a more simple approach without too much code duplication.

Thanks and kind regards,
Michael

Start page broken for admins & moderators

$

@jonasth wrote:

Hi,

We have a discourse forum where admins and moderators currently can’t visit the start page, because it renders a 500 Internal Server Error page. It works fine for normal users and logged-out users.

Separate thread and category views work fine for all users (including admins/moderators), and the admin page works fine.

Discourse version: v2.0.0.beta2

The error in the logs:

/var/www/discourse/app/models/category.rb:439:in `url'
/var/www/discourse/app/helpers/topics_helper.rb:16:in `categories_breadcrumb'
/var/www/discourse/app/views/topics/show.html.erb:5:in `_app_views_topics_show_html_erb___1372095578456862489_70244849918320'
/var/www/discourse/vendor/bundle/ruby/2.4.0/gems/actionview-5.1.4/lib/action_view/template.rb:157:in `block in render'

The line where it blows up:
url << "/#{parent_category.slug}" if parent_category_id

Looking at the backtrace and the code (I am not a ruby dev) it seems it’s building a list of topics for the start page. The parent_category variable is null but the parent_category_id is set, so I think there’s a topic with a reference to a non-existing category?

In that case there’s a broken topic with a non-existing category that only admins and moderators can see.

Has anyone seen this error before?
Or maybe a suggestion how to find this broken topic in the database?

Cheers

Dealing with user mentions

$

@Curtis_Kephart wrote:

I am a mod at a growing discourse forum.

We’re running into an issue where some members mention users (@Curtis_Kephart for example) a bit too often.

The mentioning-user is clearly trying to call in people they think will be helpful in answering their question. They are just being a little aggressive for some in our communities taste.

Mentioned-users will usually be great participants. People that watch the forum frequently and don’t need to be called on in the first place. People who I’d love to keep happy and engaged, and not annoyed or burnt out with too many notifications.
There’s a worry that the person mentioned might not answer for any number of reasons, but then maybe their non-responsiveness will give the forum a reputation of non-responsiveness. It also puts focus on individuals and away from the community.
But also, it’s a free country and the ability to mention people is just a useful feature.

We have mixed feelings about this behavior and are curious if you’ve experienced it yourself, and if you have advice for handling it.

Is there perhaps a feature we missed? where we might limit the number of mentions a specific-user is able to make over some period of time?

Remove the tags of the "Originally published at" sentence

@erikmolenaarnl wrote:

Hi!

When WP Discourse generates a new topic for a new post, it outputs the “Published at Text” e.g. “Originally published at:” within <small> tags.

Is it possible to disable this <small> tags wrapping? It looks kinda out of place. Even better: if the post URL will be placed on a new line, a nicely polished onebox would be generated.

Like this: 02.14.2018-15.56.19

Looking forward to your reply. Perhaps this makes a great suggestion for a future update of the plugin? Thanks.

Inconsistent tag selection when viewing tag pages

@clay wrote:

Let’s say I see a tag listed and click on it from the “main” page Latest view. The topic looks like this:

56%20AM

If I click on faq-material I am taken here:

https://meta.discourse.org/tags/faq-material

The header from that page looks like:

Note that the “all tags” still says all tags. Also, there is a New Topic button.

Now, going back to the main page, let’s say I eye this topic:

51%20AM

Now, I click on the pr-welcome tag and I’m taken here:

https://meta.discourse.org/tags/pr-welcome

The header now looks like this and shows pr-welcome instad of all tags:

There’s also a New Topic button.

It seems to me like the first example is misbehaving and the tag name isn’t being set in the menu.

As a side note, on an updated Discourse install that I admin, if I go to a tag page, I don’t see the New Topic button at all:

That’s a little sad. I’d like to be able to see the New Topic button from a tag page if I’m logged in as Admin and have that tag automatically apply to the topic I create. I’m not sure if the button missing is a bug or the addition of it for admins a feature request. Note that I have the navigation plugin installed to put the Tags link on the main menu at the top.
