Wordpress failure to connect to Discourse

I’m trying to connect a Standard plan customer (@andrec) to their WordPress. I’ve copy-pasted the URL, and used the API key to remotely change settings, so I’m sure those are both correct.

I then disabled all plugins except wp-discourse and still no joy.

The only system settings changed on the Discourse side is the SSO key, which is the same in Discourse and WordPress, and shouldn’t matter since SSO isn’t enabled yet anyway.

I don’t know what I could be missing.

Hashtag autocomplete issue

Noticed an issue with # autocomplete when composing a reply. Basically I start typing # in a context where I don’t want to tag something (e.g. #s) but even after hitting ‘space’, or several spaces, the autocomplete dialogue still shows and if I hit ‘return’ it autocompletes when I didn’t want it to.

Note: below Dropbox video link seems to not be displaying correctly as embed. Here’s the raw URL: https://www.dropbox.com/s/dx4tlkobrx1w170/discourse-hashtag-autocomplete-bug.mov?dl=0

WP Discourse + missing SSO records

@bts wrote:

This is probably a question for @Simon_Cossar — I’m having some confusion with missing SSO records, and username issue, for some of our users synced from our WordPress site with WP Discourse.

Somehow we’ve ended up with a bunch of Discourse users with missing SSO records — something like 200+ out of roughly 1500 total users. SSO via WordPress is the ONLY sign-on method we have for Discourse, so seems something has gone wrong.

I suspect this may have something to do with a bulk group import I made.

A little while back I added all our paying subscribers (WordPress users) to a specific group in Discourse, looping through them using the WP Discourse method ‘add_user_to_discourse_group’.

My assumption would be if they didn’t already have an active Discourse account, this would create one linked to their WP account as normal — perhaps that’s not the case? Could this have created Discourse users missing SSO records?

One thing that may be related, and also seems like it could be a bug of some sort — I notice many users with “2” appended to their username in Discourse.

That is, their username in WP is ‘name’ but their username in Discourse somehow got created as ‘name2’. When I search for user ‘name’ in Discourse I don’t see both ‘name’ and ‘name2’ so as far as I can tell it doesn’t seem to be a question of accidental duplicate users, though possible there’s some hidden duplicate logic accidentally triggered on the aforementioned import for whatever reason…

Anyway these users with the extra ‘2’ on their usernames seem to also be among the ones missing SSO records, making me think it’s somehow related.

One other thing, of the ~230 users missing SSO data, I’m seeing ~20 with Discourse status ‘active’ — not even sure how that’s possible, as again, I believe the only way they can log in is via WordPress. (Almost none have posted at all, so seems like it would be safe enough to change their usernames to be the same as the ones in WP…)

Appreciate any thoughts on this. Not urgent (haven’t yet noticed anyone complaining about not being able to log in or anything) but I would like to have correct user data for all our WP users. Would there be some safe way, WP Discourse method or otherwise, to force re-sync SSO records for all users? Thanks!

I operate two very large communities right now. One is powered by PHPfox and one is powered by Xenforo. I have am looking for a developer with strong Discourse experience who I can hire to do both of these migrations for me. This will involve implementing some add-ons, implementing our Google DFP advertising, helping the navigation fit our brand, and integrating with our single sign-on system. I also want the developer to set up several new Discourse installations for us. If you are interested, please email nathan@gwilliam.com with your resume/CV, information about your Discourse experience and hour hourly rate. Thank you very much.

Bursts of 502 Service Unavailable, pointers to debug

@smth wrote:

Hi,

I run discuss.pytorch.org hosted on DigitalOcean. A couple of nights ago, the website became REALLY slow, and we were seeing “nginx 502 service unavailable” pages.
Disk space was plenty available, nothing changed recently.
htop showed that there was enough processing available, cores were not fully occupied.
The only thing I remember changing on the machine in a recent time window was that I did a apt dist-upgrade a week earlier to get Spectre/Meltdown patches.

After looking around on the forums and finding no references / pointers that are relevant, I decided to take a backup, and then nuked the machine.

I created a fresh machine, updated 16.04 to the latest kernel / patches, and deployed a new discourse install. I t was REALLY slow / was 502-ing. I presumed that the upgrades were probably the issue.

So, I created yet another fresh machine, didn’t update 16.04 and deployed a new discourse install. Then I restored from backup. The site was back to normal performance.

However, today afternoon for a period of an hour or so, users saw 502 Service Unavailable, and then the site came back to normal performance.

My question is:

  • can I get any pointers to handle such situations, from a sysadmin perspective? What exactly to look for, any log parsing.
  • are there any recent known issues with discourse installs across the community with elevated 502 Service Unavailable errors?

Love that term – “Whispering.”

I am curious for those of you who use it, what situations do you tend to use it in and what does it come in handy for that might be unique/more convenient than posting in staff notes on a member, discussing the situation in the staff category, PMing each other, etc.

At first glance this looks OK, but the title is not being shown. It’s currently above the top of the screen. You can see a glyph poking out above the word “see”.

If font sizes are customized it looks even worse, as the excerpt can be displayed somewhat offscreen.

Server Static File

@pfaffman wrote:

Want to serve a static file at the root of your Discourse server?

Here’s what to do. In the bottom of your app.yml file, down in the custom commands section, do something like this:

## Remember, this is YAML syntax - you can only have one block with a name
run:
  - exec: echo "Beginning of custom commands"
  - file:
     path: /var/www/discourse/public/myfile.txt
     chmod: "+r"
     contents: |
       Stuff that's in the file goes here.
  - exec: echo "End of custom commands"

And . /launcher rebuild app
The file will then be accessible as http://yourserver.com/myfile.txt

I’m wondering if there is any setting that hides or removes the little tab (where it reads “411.7 ms”) at the top left.

Thanks.

[Paid] Set locale for SSO users

$

@sebastien wrote:

Hi Guys,

Our current SSO platform has the ability to add a local parameter to the query string we send to discourse.

Current we support the following languages “en”, “zh-Hans” [Simplified chinese], “zh-Hant” [Traditional chinese], “ja”, “ko”, “id”, “vi”, “ar”, “th”.
Note: This is not an exhaustive list and we will keep on adding new languages.

Flow:
1/ When a user logs in (SSO) for the first time (=user creation), we set Discourse language based on the specified “locale” parameter.

  • If this parameter is missing or invalid, we log a warning in discourse log and keep default language.
  • If requested language is missing from discourse, we also log a warning in discourse log and keep default language.

2/ Once a user created, we do not override the locale setting.

Technical:
1/ The “locale” query string parameter is embedded within the sso payload
2/ We own the server hosting Discourse (they are in AWS)
2/ We are using the latest version of Discourse 2.0.0 beta (updated weekly)

How much would it cost to develop this plugin?

Thank you,
Seb

The external link on the bottom worked, in contrast.

Few clarifications on Discourse

@Sumedha wrote:

Hi all,

We are having several clarifications with Discourse Community edition hosted on our platform;

  1. How do we can rebuild Discourse from our own repertory with our own changes? What is the best practice?
  2. Rebuild will deploy the latest codes base even it’s on Beta1, Beta2 etc, so, how do we overcome this situation? do you have any method to retrieve the code from the stable branch?
  3. Is there a way to remove rate limits for a specific API key? Our system sends out invitations for topics for large number of participants. This fails because of rate limits.

Thank you !

Multiple users from one IP address (i.e. Discourse doesn't work for companies)

This setting is way too low by default if you are using Discourse in a large organisation.

One of our clients hit the limit within days of launch, 3 users is way too low.

I completely missed this setting (we have a closed forum, users are moderated after signup, so I completely skipped the “Spam” part of the settings) when setting up. I only found out by chance, when someone reported via our support-desk.

I suggest to up this to something higher (e.g. 25) by default, if spam turns out to be a problem, users will find this setting and can consciously set it lower.

Was it something wrong I entered on the terminal?

I want to implement a user webhook and I have a few questions.

1- what does “when user update” means in the webhook? I changed the trust level of a user as for test, but it didnt trigger anything.

2- what is the performance side effect of using webhooks in a busy forum. For example, does user feel any delay in login/sign up, when I enable these webhooks?
