Discourse 2.0.0.beta3 Release Notes

@jomaxro wrote:

New features in 2.0.0.beta3

Improved HTML Pasting Support

Introduced originally in Discourse 1.9.0.beta16, in this beta we’ve improved support for pasting lists copied from Microsoft Word.

Improved Theme Support

Community theme developer @lll requested the ability to whitelist a specific HTML class that could be targeted by a theme. Theme developers can now use div[data-theme-*] as a target. For more information, see How can I whitelist a class in a theme?

Improved Category/Tag Dropdowns

First released in Discourse 1.9.0.beta15, @joffreyjaffeux has continued to improve our select boxes and dropdowns. For 2.0.0.beta3, further improvements to the category and tag filters have been added, including category badges and a brand new tag selector in the composer.

Login by Link via Email

Thanks to contributor @fantasticfears and @tgxworld you can now login to Discourse without typing your password! Simply request a “magic login link” via email and click to login.

New Site Settings

Some extremely large/busy sites have requested additional controls limiting what users can do. We’ve added 3 new site settings giving admins additional control. These settings include:

  • allow staff flags, false by default - can users flag staff posts.
  • min trust to post links - customize the minimum TL to post links
  • min trust to flag posts - customize the minimum TL to flag a post

Menu Toggle for Different Reply Modes

Ever started a reply to a post but realize it really should be a reply to the topic? How about realizing your reply is going off on a tangent and should be its own topic? Now you can easily switch between different types of replies right from the composer.

Security Updates

This beta includes 3 security fixes for issues reported by our community and HackerOne.

  • Don’t onebox whispers
  • Correct local onebox category checks
  • Prevent robots from indexing certain routes

Even more!

But wait, there’s more! For a full list of new features, bug fixes, UX improvements, and more, be sure to review the Additional Features and Fixes listed below.

Hello,

I am new to Discourse. I installed Discourse with Docker on my sparse PC home. The PC runs Ubuntu. I found the Discourse site failed after I restarted my server. It seems that the launcher COMMAND app commands were not useful. Could someone write a short guide for how to restart Discourse after server rebooting? Thanks

Following the instruction in my test email below that i sent to myself i sent a test email to mail-tester.com and it scored me 9/10 for mailgun.org saying my mail ip was on an ip blacklist "Listed in [Hostkarma] ( -1 )"
is the only way to fix this to pay $50 or something for a dedicated IP and how bad will this affect my users getting email

We highly recommend you send a test email to mail-tester.com to verify that all the above is working correctly.

Confusion between backup "frequency" and "period"

$

@sybren wrote:

The automatic backup feature of Discourse has a setting backup frequency. However, I suspect that this setting does not control the backup frequency, but rather the backup period (where period = 1/frequency), i.e. when set to 4 my suspicion is that it would create a backup every 4 days and not 4x per day.

This is not clear in the user interface. The hint below the setting says “How frequently we create a site backup, in days”, which indicates that indeed this is the period and not the frequency. It also doesn’t indicate whether it accepts integers or floats.

I would suggest either changing the (label of the) setting to backup period, or adding a little explanation that a setting of 4 would create a backup every 4 days. This would take away the ambiguity between “most likely explanation” and “actual literal meaning”.

Hi friends,

One of the tools I’ve relied on for selecting community software is FeverBee’s platform comparison tool:

Engaging users with email notifications of posts

$

@Philip_Colmer wrote:

We’re looking at using Discourse to increase communications between staff of a non-announcement nature, i.e. discussions :).

Given the attitudes of our staff, it is likely that the primary mechanism for interacting with Discourse will be via email. In testing, one of the challenges I’m trying to fix is how to get Discourse to send email notifications of new posts when they occur; note that Summary emails are working but this isn’t what the staff are used to.

I’ve set “default categories watching” to the category we’re using for testing but that doesn’t seem to have triggered an email to the test users when I posted to that category.

So:

  • Does that setting only apply to accounts that get created after the setting is configured?
  • If it automatically applies to all accounts, any suggestions when there wasn’t an email sent?
  • Is there a better/more appropriate way of achieving what I want? I thought that maybe “default categories watching first post” might also be relevant, but that would seem to only apply to replies to a post (since you are watching after a topic has been created)?

I know that users can turn on “mailing list mode” but I’m not sure (yet) if that is the right way to approach this - I’m trying to strike the right balance on the level of email people are going to receive.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Handling markdown vs html image syntax; seeking workflow advice

$

@filip wrote:

Hi!

My workflow got broken when Discourse updated image uploads from html to markdown syntax. I wonder what others are doing out there.

1, This is what my workflow used to be when typing up a blog post:

  • Write the skeleton locally in a text editor or draftin.com
  • Copy paste into a draft post in Discourse
  • Copy Paste in all images (which generated HTML img tags)
  • Back to a text editor. Search and Replace ALL to go from relative URL to absolute (so it can be seen outside of Discourse)
  • Push the post to Wordpress (draftin does that very nicely)
  • Publish from Wordpress to Discourse using WP-Discourse plugin.

It’s a bit convoluted :confused: , but it allowed me to use copy paste workflow for image uploads and create the master images in discourse right away :+1: .

2, Now, this doesn’t work.

  • Discourse generates markdown imag tag ![image|680x500](upload://name.jpg) instead of the old html.

3, ??

  • Is there an easy way to convert these into Absolute Path URLs so I can pass it onto Wordpress? Less clicks the better.
  • Is there a better workflow in general? I bet there is!

Any ideas appreciated!

Because I was not able to start the container app, so the site kept down.

How do I do what I did in htaccess in nginx?

@MostHated wrote:

Hey there,
I just switched over to Discourse, I was testing Flarum before with Apache and htaccess and I had a rule written up that whenever there was a subdomain (excluding www.) it would take that subdomain and append it to the end of the url to simulate a dynamic subdomains and I didn’t have to actually make them for them to work how I wanted. Example being if you type “abc.domain.com” it would end up as “domain.com/forum/t/abc” which would drop you in the abc section of the forum. Is it possible to do this with Discourse using nginx?

Looking at how Discourse is laid out, I would want it to be abc.domain.com takes you to domain.com/forum/c/abc/ If anyone has any insight on this, I would appreciate it!

Thanks,

Which forum members create the most work for staff?

$

@Biscuit wrote:

Feature suggestion: Monitor which forum members create the most moderation / administrative work for staff. This could be achieved by counting the number of “Staff contacts made” eg:

  • Flags approved about their posts.
  • Official warnings
  • Suspensions
  • Threads that had to be moved to correct category
  • Threads renamed by staff
  • Threads / posts removed
  • Censored words used
  • Threads that had to be merged into another thread by staff.

Each time a task like this is completed by staff, it could increment the users “Staff Contact” score. Staff could then view / report on that score to gain visibility of the number of staff contacts made for that user today, this week, ever, etc.

Use cases:

  1. Forum staff periodically review a Staff Contact score report to determine which individuals are creating the most “noise” and consuming the most time for staff, to enable corrective action to be taken, which could range from a PM guiding the user, up to suspension depending on the seriousness.

  2. The total of all members “Staff Contact” scores could be referenced as indicators of overall moderation workload trends over time.

  3. Forum staff can view a specific users Staff Contact score on the users admin page, to factor this into any decision making about how to moderate.

Permissions - Create / Reply / See. What about editing based on group and category?

@MostHated wrote:

Hello,
I was wondering if there is a way to restrict who can edit in a certain category? My sites plan was to have different teams (assuming a team would need to be a group) who each get their own category and make it so only they can edit what is in their category. They should be free to browse, post, etc anywhere else as a normal user could, but basically be in charge of their own category and no one else’s. How might I go about doing this?

Standard users, of course, would be able to post anywhere they wanted. I am wanting it to be a support forum, where the team in charge of the category is supporting the people posting in that category, but not to be an overall moderator of the site, as some of the teams might technically be in competition and I don’t want anyone messing around with other teams categories.

Thanks!
