Starting membership site fresh from square one with Discourse

@Steve-O wrote:

Hi folks, please critique my technology providers and plan!

I’m in the exploratory phase of a new membership site and I have minimal legacy users or systems to contend with, so I’m starting with a clean slate. Here’s what I have so far:

Software and SaaS Services:
Wordpress for basic marketing splash page and site to host paid digital downloads
Memberful / Stripe combo for member management and payments (includes plugins for mailchimp, wordpress and discourse)
Mailchimp for mail functions and marketing
Discourse for forum software (OF COURSE!)
LetsEncrypt for full-site SSL certificate

Hosting:
Amazon LightSail
- 1 VPS for wordpress (1vCPU 1GB RAM) $10/mo
- 1 VPS for docker instance (1vCPU 1GB RAM for Discourse) $10/mo
OR
DigitalOcean
- 1 VPS of 4GB 2vCPU 80GB for both docker and wordpress (nginx reverse proxy) $20/mo

I’d love to nix wordpress and use a protected forum for digital downloads but can’t seem to figure out how to do dripped content without some kind of wordpress plugin for support. I’ll be setting up a MailChimp landing page soon just to harvest some emails of interested users, and maybe a Patreon for folks to put a few bucks in while we get things going.

What do you think, will these play nicely together? There seems to be lots of wiggle room when it comes to tried-and-true ways to build membership communities… if you could start fresh with minimal startup costs what would you differently than above?

How to enable your community to use Discourse as a (micro) blogging platform

@mcwumbly wrote:

The following is adapted from a how-to topic on our forum. It assumes you have tagging enabled and available to most trust levels, and also that you have the Slack plugin set up. It also links to topics for how to subscribe to tags via email and Slack that I have not adapted to post here, but you can edit that part out or add similar content yourself as well.

So, you want to start a blog about what your or your team is doing to share with others. Great! We can help! Here’s a short how to on how you can use our forum as an blogging or publishing platform.

Why Discourse?

While it may not seem obvious at first, but posting on our forum can be a great way to do this. Here’s why:

  1. It allows an easy way for you to engage with your audience. Others can comment on your posts and continue the discussion with you and other readers.

  2. It has built-in features for subscribing to posts via email or Slack.

Also, while your core audience may only be a slice of the community here, sharing your experiences in a place that is open and discoverable can contribute greatly to our shared understanding about the things we are doing here and how things are connected.

How To

It’s pretty easy. The basic ideas is to “just use a tag” which you can create freely. But here is some additional guidance for what you can do to put it all together.

  1. Choose a tag for your blog. (e.g. #team-awesome-blog)
  2. Choose a regular cadence that you feel is sustainable (e.g. weekly, bi-weekly or monthly)
  3. Create a new topic for each post*
  4. Title each topic with something about the content and the name of your blog.
    (e.g: Try out our new fizzwhig feature! - Team Awesome Blog No. 2)
  5. Tag your topic with your tag (#team-awesome-blog)
  6. Include a bit of boiler-plate** at the bottom of your post to:
    • Link to the previous post.
    • Link to the list of all posts.
    • Remind people how to subscribe.
  7. Finally, when you publish a new post, share the link in other channels where your core audience hangs out (Slack, email, twitter, etc).

*Having a separate topic for each post gives people a place to reply, comment and discuss the ideas in your post with you and others.

**Example boilerplate below:

Previous issue: First beta release! - Team Awesome Blog No. 6
All issues: #team-awesome-blog. Subscribe via email or Slack.

Here’s the corresponding markdown:

---

*Previous issue: https://forum.example.com/t/first-beta-release-team-awesome-blog-no-6/26991*
*All issues: #team-awesome-blog. Subscribe via [email](link-to-how-to-subscribe-to-a-tag-via-email) or [Slack](link-to-how-to-subscribe-to-a-tag-via-slack).*

That’s it!

If you want to give this a try and have any questions, feedback or other ideas, please reply below.

When tapping on a mention, the usercard has the same capitalization as the mention

Hi. Not a very major bug, but when you tap on a mention, the usercard has the same capitalization. So, for example, @nindroid and @NINDROID are both @Nindroid, but the usercard displays different capitalization for them both.

Not really a problem, but something that’s kind of annoying.

Any way for admin users to not be in admin mode etc?

@wolftune wrote:

I wish there were a way for moderators and admins to have a normal user experience and enter mod or admin mode only as needed.

Most significantly, I’m an admin, but I don’t want to have a “reply” option on closed topics. I want to have to take an extra step, knowing that I’m doing it, in order to take actions that only mods or admins can take.

Is there any way to distinguish these things or to know at least, as a mod or admin, which things are only showing as options because I’m a mod or admin?

How can I stop redirection?

Hello,

Consider a situation for an affiliate marketer…

where path http://x.com/go/discourse/ is HTTP 301 to https://discourse.org/ref=1 again HTTP 301 to https://discourse.org/

Problem is when I type first link, in onebox it automatically redirect to the final destination which is causing loss of revenue.

Please help me in disabling onebox and redirection for the specific path http://x.com/go/*

I want when I type http://x.com/go/discourse/ link should be as it is without modification.

Thanks

Onebox of a Discourse comment doesn't display a link to the comment/topic

Is this a regression? I have linked to a comment in our Discourse instance, and the resulting onebox misses a link to the comment/topic.

Link: III Congrés de Sobirania Tecnològica, 3 de març de 2018 a Barcelona - La Piscina - Confederac.ió – the original comment linked is #NiReiNiPor - Combatem el franquisme arreu dels Països Catalans. Via @arran_jovent - SantsTV - SantsTV - Confederac.ió

Actually, let me try to replicate it here:

Hm. Here it seems to work. Our Discourse is up to date. Any ideas about what might be happening?

Watched words for staff members too

Hi,

Is there any way to check staff for inappropriate words during posting? I tried Watched Words option, but it works only for non-staff. As I understand, it works as designed.

I would like to avoid staff members use some phrases, for instance, they need to check themselves the URL published (external must be):
NOT OK: The issue has been added: https://internal.domain.com/B-123
OK: The issue has been added: https://external.domain.com/B-123

How to achieve this?

How to transfer data from plugin to app/views templates?

@Stranik wrote:

  1. I created a test page using the plugin help

By placing the following code in the appropriate files.
For example, in plugin.rb

Discourse::Application.routes.append do
  get '/help' => 'discourse_help/help#my_page'
end

load File.expand_path('../lib/dev/engine.rb', __FILE__)

engine.rb

module DiscourseHelp
  class Engine < ::Rails::Engine
    isolate_namespace DiscourseHelp

    config.after_initialize do
		Discourse::Application.routes.append do
			mount ::DiscourseHelp::Engine, at: "/"
		end
    end
  end
end

Etc.

I can see this page very well in my browser. Nicely. Included the second browser did the User Agent as a search engine and looked at this page as it is seen by the robots (search engines).

Robots do not see the content of the page, but only see:

Perfectly. I then decided to check and put to check already working plugins (for example, static pages, which were offered here). The result is similar.

Search engines do not see the content of the pages they create. I. e., I cannot use such pages for search engines.

I would like to know what are the ways to pass plugin content to templates at: app/views

I beg forgiveness for my English, Google translator used.

Another example about which I wrote above.

https://discourseleague.com/page/static-pages-plugin/1/

Etc. This is a general trend …

Link to quoted reply missing?

@thorbenegberts wrote:

Hi there,

We’re not sure if this was a feature before or if it’s missing now.

If we insert a link to a reply, e.g. /t/my-topic/123/3, there is no link to the reply within the quote box:

Only if the topic is quoted directly, e.g. /t/my-topic/123/, a link is shown:

The missing link makes it harder for users to just jump to the quoted reply.

Bug or feature? :slight_smile:

A User Who Deletes Their Posts

@TimothyDonaghue wrote:

Hello There,

I have wondered on this topic for a while and searched a bit but could not quite find a clear answer. My condolences if I missed it.

A while ago, a user just deleted their hundreds of posts and so their previous comments just sat there “deleted” which now looks almost like spam.

Can you please either point me to a discussion on resolutions for this, or to which feature in my admin area allows me to configure the amount of deletes allowed? I found the “delete all posts max” feature but it confused me: does that pertain to an admin or a user?

Also, a user has asked if I can delete their account. Does this affect their posts?

The relation between post deletion and account deletion altogether has confused me a little. Thank you.

Thinking about using discourse

Hi all I am thinking about using discourse for a future project. I have a lot of experience with what you would call traditional PHP and mysql forums. Like IPS, xenforo and others.

Discourse is rather new to me and wonder how easy it is to install and manage. Any advice and information anyone could give me would be great.

Perspectives plugin won't allow post after trigger

@pfaffman wrote:

In response to Thinking about using discourse

A modal popped up and said that I was being rude and that I might be flagged and that I might want to edit my post.

I’ve followed the discussion about what I think was happening and was intrigued. I looked at my post again, wondering what had triggered the warning. I couldn’t figure that out. When I tried to post, however, the result button did nothing. I edited the text and tried again,but it still wouldn’t post.

I guess it’s a bug that I couldn’t post at all?

Edit: and then this wouldn’t post either. I think (but I’m not entirely certain) they I opened another window on Android Chrome and this unposted topic popped up and then I was able to click the button to post it.

Add a Sign up button (memberful purchase link) in header and disappear when log in

I have the memberful integration with Discourse. When SSO is active, the sign up button disappear. Only the “sign in” button of Discourse is showing and convert to the Memberful’s sign in form.

I will add a “sign up” button with some CSS codes in the header. My question is : how to make this button disappear when a member is log in? I want the same thing that happen to the current “sign in” button of Discourse, it is hiding when a member log in.

Chat Integration leaks Babble chats

I have both Babble and the Chat Integrations plugins installed. When I created a Babble chat for the Staff group and sent a test message, the Chat Integrations plugin passed it on to the Matrix channel. I’m not sure if this is an issue with the way Babble associates the chat with a group/category or Chat Integration’s parsing of posts/rules.
