Edits not properly reset with Shared Drafts

Used the new Shared Drafts feature when writing up Discourse 2.0.0.beta5 Release Notes today. Prior to publishing the topic I made 2 edits. After publishing the topic I made another edit, which I then hid via “hide revision”.

Expected Results:

Anonymous viewer: no edits seen.
Non-staff user: no edits seen.
Staff user: 1 edit seen (but hidden).

Actual Results:

:x: Anonymous viewer: 3 edits seen. Blank edit history modal.
:x: Non-staff user: 3 edits seen. Blank edit history modal.
:white_check_mark: Staff user: 1 edit seen (but hidden)

An aside (maybe a bug?) - the grace edit window didn’t seem to apply after publishing. The post publishing edit was made with 10 seconds of publishing the posts, and changed less characters than the editing grace period max diff high trust (400). I’d expect it to be a grace edit and thus not logged?

When two internal links are added to a topic the spacing between them is inconsistent. If no blank line is between the links the spacing is significantly greater than if a blank line is provided.

Is there a way to suggest DuckDuckGo instead of Google for failed search UI?

When a search returns no results, there’s a suggestion to try a Google search. We can alter the text above the button and could even alter the button label. But is there a way to change the button to use DuckDuckGo instead of Google? We do not want to endorse use of Google.

Dummy user to create initial content

@mucio wrote:

We just installed Discourse in our company and started to show it to people. Of course we need content to convince them to move conversations to Discourse, to do this we need to put more content.

My idea was to copy some of the questions I saw today in one of our chatroom to Discourse, but I didn’t want to post them with my user (it will look weird).

Is there a way to create a dummy user, like admin or Discobot, and impersonate it to post questions and answers?

Anyway we are also using Google SSO if this changes anything.

A Discourse theme component to use DuckDuckGo as the suggested search system, instead of Google!

p.s. You’ll probably want to customize some of the text strings to stop mentioning Google, too.

Adding a mixin to a class in a plugin?

@shoshber wrote:

I need to modify a javascript controller (create-account). If I were writing it from scratch, I’d add a mixin called something like (FooValidation), the same way the mixins PasswordValidation and UsernameValidation are applied (discourse/create-account.js.es6 at f03b6bd8c925163b41b9e33b39484d102dbaee44 · discourse/discourse · GitHub). I can’t figure out how, though.

I could just add the relevant properties/methods to the create account controller using PluginApi.modifyClass, but that doesn’t feel right, especially seeing as I’ll want to reuse the mixin.

What’s the best way to achieve this?

Make Discourse SSO Master (SSO Client)

@Adam_Adam wrote:

how do I make discourse the SSO client (as its called on the WP plugin). So that users have to sign-up/login through discourse. And how do I make it so they can sign-in/sign-up right on wordpress, but using discourse sign in/up. Is that possible?

I noticed that wordpress is allowing this. Although, over on discourse, I only see the option to
“Enable single sign on via an external site”.

Admin Warnings Theme Component

When admins click ‘reply’ on a closed topic, they will be warned. This helps to prevent admins accidentally continuing a closed/archived discussion (much to the frustration of other forum users!).

Warning text is configurable as a theme setting.

To install, follow the instructions here:

Retaining chat logs - pros and cons

@McBlu wrote:

For those of you who run chat channels in your forum:

(a) did you include in your TOS your policy on retaining chat logs?

(b) do you retain chat logs, and if so why/why not?

Chat logs might be useful for accountability and fair moderating. However, chats are more of a free for all with loose tongues and less care put into what is said. Logs of chats aren’t subject to the careful moderating and auditing that topics are. Yet you can be held accountable for their content if produced under subpoena. Naturally, we’d delete and address inappropriate comments but still…

Has anyone thought this deeply about chat logs or have any wisdom to impart.

A chat log retained for a set period of time, say two weeks, might be handy, to address issues, but limit liability. Or am I overthinking this?

Continuing the discussion from Discourse 2.0.0.beta5 Release Notes:

I suppose it’s worth trying this out, but wouldn’t it be better to do it for TL2 and above? I think removing the description at TL1 is too early. People only spend a rather short time at TL0. Also: what about bootstrap mode? Does this mean that the first 50 users will never get to see the category description in the dropdown menu?

Don’t forget mobile…

Destructive actions, like deleting a post, should include a prompt when using the keyboard

@barryvan wrote:

I just became very confused, because I inadvertently deleted a topic by pressing d without the editor focussed.

I would suggest that destructive or dangerous actions should always include an “are you sure?” prompt, even (especially?) when triggered using a keyboard shortcut. This would mean that deleting a topic would then be denter.

Failing to create several staged users per topic from email

$

@alh wrote:

I just setup my first Discourse instance - fantastic product by the way - and somehow from reading the docs I was under the impression that it is possible to create a topic from email (directly and/or via forwarding) that is watched by several staged users.

So I expected that sending a mail from reporter@somedomain.com to e. g. support@mydomain.com with e. g. a someoneelse@someotherdomain.com in TO or CC would create a new topic in the support category with staged users reporter@somedomain.com and someoneelse@someotherdomain.com. Same goes for forwarding, e. g. someoneelse@someotherdomain.com sends an issue to reporter@somedomain.com who then forwards it to support@mydomain.com. Again I thought that this creates a topic with two staged users.

However, the only staged user that is ever created and notified upon replies is reporter@somedomain.com. Am I missing something?

Installing this theme component will add a stopwatch to the top of a topic. A tag specified in the theme settings will establish which topics the stopwatch will appear.

You must add a single tag name to associate with a stopwatch. In this example I use a tag called “speed-read”:

About

This theme component was inspired by the discussion found here:

The usefulness of this theme component is very niche I imagine, but hopefully it will end up helping a few people either for what it is, or as example code.

Some ideas where it could be applied in a forum:

  • Some type of quiz/test practice
  • Speed-reading exercises
  • Public speaking practice

As of now, it does not save the time after leaving the topic.

NOTE: Immediately after editing the title of a topic that has a stopwatch, the stopwatch will temporarily disappear. This only affects the one making the edit and a simple refresh of the page will bring it right back.
