Discourse Needs help resources and documentation

It would be useful if Discourse came with a help section on how to use it, and explanations on how to set it up. We had to find out how to do everything worked by trial and error. Searching through this forum is time consuming and oriented towards developers.

Wordpress + Discourse using Digital Ocean and Serverpilot

I’m trying to setup a droplet on DO and end up with a wordpress at mydomain, and my discourse at forum.mydomain.

I am using serverpilot, I first installed discourse and set it up to run at forum.mydomain, then I configured the wordpress app via serverpilot one-click install and pointed it to mydomain.com.

However, discourse exists at both forum.mydomain AND mydomain. Serverpilot tells me that wordpress is ready to configure, but it is inaccessible via domain/IP.

How can I make sure discourse remains ONLY on forum.mydomain, while wordpress is relegated to mydomain.com?

Google Crawler and Permalinks 404s

Hi everyone,

We just launched a new discourse install and everything is working fairly smoothly. One issue I’ve noticed is that Google is crawling links with query params (ex. answers/c/architecture?no_subcategories=false&page=1). This leads to issues with the permalink system since the permalink lookup is for the exact url match. In the above case, the problem arose because a category was renamed, which created a permalink but the permalink can’t handle the query param.

Critique Our Forum Before Launch Date!

@fellowshipforums wrote:

Hello,

We are getting close to officially launching our forum, but before we do so we would love to hear your feedback!

This is the first forum that we have ever built and the support from the discourse community has been absolutely phenomenal.

https://www.fellowshipforums.com

The forum is for students who are studying for high level actuarial exams. Eventually there will be a separate forum for each exam (~20 of them). The first forum is only for the ERM (Enterprise Risk Management) Exam.

We have split it up into 4 categories, as follows:

1. Syllabus Material
This category has a specific topic created for each syllabus reading that is tested on the exam. It is a closed category, so students cannot create their own topics. All discussion for a specific reading is intended to take place in the appropriate topic. Thus it will be easy for current and new students to quickly find all past and current discussion for a specific readings.

The first post in each topic is a “wiki post”, so students can edit it as they please. The idea is to have a summary/key points for the reading easily accessible at the beginning of the topic.

2. Past Exams
This category is intended for discussion about specific past exam questions. The category is split by exam sitting (subcategory), and each exam sitting has a topic created for each question. This category is also closed, meaning students cannot create/remove topics. In each topic, the exam question and solution is readily available, as well as a link to the following question in the exam and a timer so students can do the exam in a timed environment.

3. Collab Center
This category is intended for discussion regarding anything and everything that is not related to a specific syllabus reading or past exam question. The focus is on exam tips, study techniques, study material, etc… This category is open so students can create topics as they please.

4. Case Study
This section is intended for discussion on the case study, which is required that students read prior to the exam. The case study is split into various sections, as organized by our sub-categories. This category is also open.

Please let me know what you think! All feedback is welcome and greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Private Topics Plugin

@jordan1909 wrote:

Repo: https://github.com/HMSAB/discourse-private-topic.git

Description:

As we have begun using Discourse more and more as a support platform we noticed a missing component that was seemingly needed. Currently in Discourse if you want to restrict access to a topic to certain people you must transition it to a private message or category with specific groups and permissions.

The challenge however with this existing methodology in a support type installation, is that you lose the ability to have all staff (unless invited) see the topic, you lose visibility on solved status in a category and there is no way to assign a category to the topic. By losing category assignments, things end up on their own, unless you tag things as well .

Private topics are intended to fill that gap.

Use Case:

Customer Jim submits a support request for his installed software, he uploads his contact information to the topic which shows publicly. All staff members need to see the topic and it must be traced back to category Product B for analytics and metrics.

Staff member John marks the topic as private. This removes access to the topic for all users except Jim and staff and keeps it in the existing category. Additionally it is unlisted from the main display.

Features:

  • Restrict access to topic for non-permitted users
  • Suppress topic from main topic list

Future Addition(s):

  • Invite additional users to the topic (working on this now)

Admin Settings:

Other than enable/disable

  • Suppress from main list

In Action:

Making private:

Making public again:

Automatically create category when creating new group

$

@tophee wrote:

The most common use of groups is probably to define access rights for non-public categories. Currently the two things - creating a group and creating a category - are entirely separate steps and since the name of a category is often the same as the name of the group that has access rights, it in a way feels like doing the same thing twice.

How about adding a check box to the ”create new group” page:

[ ] Create a private category for this group

When ticked, creating the group will - you guessed it - automatically create a private category with the same name as the group and limit create, reply, see rights to members of the new group.

A more sophisticated version of this feature would allow the user to change the default category name already on the group page, but the basic implementation with just the default name would also be a great improvement.

Perhaps, the setup/launch script is pulling a variable that is different in MacOS than linux.

Allow modifying class methods/properties in plugin-api?

@shoshber wrote:

plugin-api.modifyClass allows us to overwrite instance methods of existing classes, but there is no analogous way to overwrite class methods. It would be cool if there were.

In my case, I want to overwrite the user model’s createAccount method (discourse/user.js.es6 at 9df7fd4f308e007e4aa2cd17e40cee92b68fad07 · discourse/discourse · GitHub).

I got around it with this, drawing heavily on plugin-api.modifyClass

const klass = api.container.factoryFor('model:user');

klass.class.reopenClass({
  createAccount(attrs) {
    console.log('overwrites createAccount')
  }
})

… which seems to work, but it’s a little kludgy.

But when finish the default Category don’t display Security tab in this category!

How can we display this tab?

Discourse App - post a review or star rating

The discourse App is key for me for monitoring activity in the forums. I get notifications seamlessly on my iPhone and can switch between forums with just a few clicks.

I noticed in apple apps there were only seven reviews and perhaps not the best reviews either. I gave it a 5-star rating but couldn’t get Apple to take my written review.

I think some users might confound the iPhone UI with being attributable to the app itself. The function of the app is to just to give you notifications and a shortcut to opening up the forum on your phone.

I think the app would add to your members’ positive experience with your forum provided you keep on all the mobile UI glitches as they come up.

Any-who, I am encouraging people who read this and use the Discourse app to post a review in the relevant app store. Here is what I saw in the Apple app store:

Automated invitations to secure group membership

I would like to orchestrate some user flows by instrumenting some poll questions to automatically send an invitation to a user they first time he/she responds to the poll to join a group that will let them see other polls and posts. The categories of the first poll questions are open to everyone, but the categories of the second level questions have been set up by permissions to restrict what can be done to members only.

Has anyone done something like this?
