How to use theme color scheme

$

@TheBestPessimist wrote:

I see that material design stock theme has multiple color schemes:

  • material teal/amber
  • simple dark
  • material dark
  • etc.

But i (as an admin) have to select exactly one of these color schemes for my users. Is there a possibility to have all the color schemes available by default to them?

One idea to “fix” this was to copy the theme multiple times and each time to chose a different color scheme, – but that just feels stupid.

Is there something i missed regarding color schemes?

Thanks.

SSO_SYNC not working

Hi Guys

I need some assistance with the /admin/users/sso_sync end point.
Using postman, I am trying to update an email address using this end point, but postman is returning a HTML page as response (which is basically the landing page of my application where discourse is integrated).

Im doing a POST to:

https:{my domain}/admin/users/sync_sso

With body:

{
	"email":"test@gmail.com",
	"external_id":"xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx",
	"require_activation":"false",
	"api_key":"xxxxxxxxxxxxx",
	"api_username":"admin users email address"
}

For the api_username, i have tried both admin user’s email address as well as username, but none works.
Is the api_username something else?
Can someone advise where Im going wrong.

After running the /wizard and selecting the Dark theme my users are still seeing the light theme. User profile settings show two “Dark” options listed (only one of them changes the theme). Users who had default interface color setting are not seeing the dark theme once activated—they still see the light theme.

I’m running 2.0.0-beta9 after recently updating from beta7 (from which my site was created).

Run a local community or neighborhood / neighbourhood Discourse forum?

Give a shout out if you run a local online group for your local geographic area.

What works?

What do you wished worked better (tech wise or other)?

Are you competing well with local Facebook Groups or have you replaced a former email list?

The reason I am asking is that E-Democracy.org is exploring our future hosting options. We have a custom install of the OS GroupServer.org tool that has served us well, but now is the time to explore what’s next. GroupServer is like an open source Google Groups tool that is an email list with a nice web interface and member directory.

We have 20K+ registered users with about 10K on the active groups. Facebook Groups and NextDoor stole our thunder from our newer groups while those that are older and were well established keep on going and going.

Toggle menu in Composer

I’ve been struggling to understand the toggle menu in composer. The one at the top, next to the detail indicating what is being composed:

Having looked at it in detail I’ve realised that there are some buggy problems in there which makes it highly confusing, hence my confusion!

I have reproduced the problems in Meta itself, so you should be able to see the behaviours here. I have tested in different browsers, they all seem to behave the same way.

  1. Fresh New Private Message

When I am writing a fresh new private message, the toggle menu should probably allow me to toggle to “Create new Topic”. Instead the only option in the Toggle menu is “Reply as linked topic”…

image

however there is no original topic to link to(!) so it does indeed go to “Create a new Topic” rather than “Replying as linked topic” as was indicated in the toggle menu…

image

  1. Remembering old composer actions

If I have either created a draft post or actually posted, then navigate entirely away from that, then click on “+Create New” anywhere (e.g. in the main homepage menu), the toggle menu gives me all sorts of options relating to that old action. Even when I am in a completely different category.

But this is an example of what I see in toggle menu…

image

Again, there is no topic that I am replying to.

Once I have sent a post and navigated away from it I would expect the composer to “forget” the old actions and simply give me the option to toggle to “New message” - but that’s all, as I am no longer composing for the previous topic context.

Please do let me know if I am missing something?

PS I got into this because the arrow is in itself confusing - so I was trying to work out what it was for! It seems to be very similar to (if not identical to) a “reply” icon. Should it not be something representing “options” instead? That would help users enormously.

I do see that there was a fair amount of discussion about this feature (for example here:
With the new right gutter, where should “Reply as Linked Topic” go? and here:
Menu toggle for different reply modes) so I apologise if I am re-raking old ground, but it doesn’t seem to be working right…

Many thanks!

Advice on approach to post migration

$

@bletch wrote:

Hi, is there a preferred Ruby HTML parsing library - preferably one that is already installed with Discourse that I can use to parse the structure of the HTML posts that I’m migrating?

Background

I’m working on a migration from MVCForum. So far I have Users, Categories, Topics, Posts, Likes, Reported posts, Badges and Badge Grants working. I have Tags and Personal Messages to do next.

However, I now need to massage the processing of the post content so that it works well with Discourse. Content comes out of MVCF as HTML and can feature lots of nested replies. I need a way to unpick the HTML and work out the structure and hierarchy.

With each blockquote reply, I can get the import post ID that was being replied to. This means that instead of simply creating a “reply to topic” post, I can instead create a Discourse “reply to post” post and therefore drop the deeply nested blockquotes.

My question is how can I model the HTML in a way that allows me to do that?

I have very little Ruby experience and am coming at this from a Python background. In Python I would use an HTML parsing library like Beautifulsoup or lxml. My guess is that Discourse already uses one that will already be installed in the runtime. This would mean that anyone in the future running the MVCF migration would not need to install an additional Gem. If one isn’t already present with Discourse, can you recommend one that would allow me to work with the HTML like it were a DOM-like object?

Thanks!

[PAID] Expand vimeo embed capabilities for chapters

@moebis wrote:

What would you like done?
Ability to add hyperlinked chapter markers that are targeted to the embedded Vimeo player in Discourse. Clicking a chapter/time code jumps you ahead to that section. Also when someone comments on the video and simply types in timecode format like “03:43” in the replies, it makes it a hyperlink to jump to the 3 minute, 43 second mark in the embedded video on the top of the topic.

When do you need it done?
2 weeks

What is your budget, in $ USD that you can offer for this task?
$200 +plus we would like to make the plugin freely available for the rest of the Discourse community

Example using the Vimeo Froogaloop APIs: HTML chapter markers for a Vimeo video

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :slight_smile:

GDPR countdown and compliance

$
0

@GBrowning wrote:

As we’re quickly approaching May 25th, here’s my (perhaps naive) understanding of certain key Discourse GDPR issues:

Right to Be Forgotten :white_check_mark:

If the user requests, the admin can use the user info panel to delete all of a user’s posts. Note you may need to up the “delete user max post age” and “delete all posts max” settings but then it’s possible. Once there are no more posts you can then delete the user.

Alternatively, a less disruptive solution is the “Anonymize User” button which leaves the posts but changes the username and everything else about the user so they are no longer identifiable, although recorded IP addresses still linger (?) so that may be an issue (see below).

Be sure to uncheck Settings > Legal > “log anonymizer details” (“Whether to keep a user’s details in the log after being anonymized. When complying to GDPR you’ll need to turn this off.”)!

The user has a “Delete My Account” button on their own info screen, but I believe only if they have a small number of posts.

So I think Discourse is okay on GDPR compliance here, as long as it’s documented in the privacy policy that they must contact the admin to do some of these operations.

Data Portability :white_check_mark:

Via the user’s own info panel they can click the “Download All” button to download all of their posts. I believe this is only the text, not any uploads, although I’m not sure about that. It’s not clear if this also includes private messages sent via Discourse, although I assume it would need to. Again, if documented in the PP then I’m hoping we’re GDPR-compliant here.

Explicit Consent to Emails :x:

By default a user will receive email if someone messages, quotes, replies, mentions, or invites them. They will also receive, by default, a digest email of popular topics and replies.

On sign-up they consented to the terms of service but not to these emails. Perhaps something like this:

[ ] The forums service can send me emails when my forums user is messaged, quoted by, replied to, mentioned, or invited by another forums user.
[ ] The forums service can send me a weekly digest email of popular topics and replies.
[ ] I agree to the terms of service and privacy policy.

If they consent then Discourse would need to record the consent date, not just a boolean, so we can match it to a ToS/PP revision.

If not checked, then all emails like those should be off by default. Perhaps after activating their account Discourse could show an email opt-in screen. Again, consent records the opt-in timestamp, unchecking should record the opt-out timestamp.

In lieu of this, is there a way to turn all of this off (a) by default for new users, and (b) for all existing users? They could then turn it on manually via their info screen. This tip is related but doesn’t change the default:

This doesn’t tackle the issue of recording opt-in / opt-out dates but it’s better than automatic opt-in.

I realize I can disable digest emails for all users and even disable emails entirely, but I simply want to turn it off by default until they opt-in, not disable it entirely.

IP Addresses :x:

Discourse stores each user’s last IP address and registration IP address. These are visible to admins in the user info screen. It is my understanding that GDPR considers IP addresses as personally identifiable information so, while there are legitimate uses for rate limiting, etc, if Discourse is keeping this data indefinitely then explicit consent may be needed. Or ideally Discourse can decay/hash this data automatically after some period of time.

Many more details in this thread:

Re-consent to Changed ToS / Privacy Policy :x: :question:

If we have to update our ToS and Privacy Policy new users would be okay but we’d need existing users to re-consent to these changes before continuing use on the forum. Again, we’d need to record the timestamp of the consent so we can pair it to a ToS/PP revision.

More details here:

To be honest, I’m not sure why a blanket pinned topic “Our ToS and PP have changed. By continuing to use this service you agree to these changes.” (with hyperlinks to the ToS and PP) wouldn’t suffice. Perhaps some more knowledgeable person can chime in here. Does every site now need to record an explicit opt-in?

What Others are Doing

It looks like some other discussion forums vendors are rolling out GDPR changes and statements. Something similar from Discourse would be most welcome as we get closer to GDPR Day.

How to run Discourse in Produciton mode locally

@eatcodetravel wrote:

I’m trying to debug a plugin that works locally but doesn’t in production. I want to run Discourse locally in production but I’m having some issues and I don’t want to keep digging if this is not the right way.

What I’m doing right now that works is

  1. Copy database configuration for development to production in the config/database.yml file
  2. Remove the database_configuration method override in application.rb
  3. Remove the check for puma configuration to be used in production in config/puma.rb
  4. Set config.public_file_server.enabled = true in config/environments/production.rb
  5. Compile assets with env RAILS_ENV=production bundle exec rake assets:precompile
  6. Run the server with env RAILS_ENV=production bundle exec rails s

Is there an easier way to do this?

Thanks!
