AdSense not loading in some cases (not a bug)

@bartv wrote:

Hi,

I’m serving ads with the official discourse-adplugin, and I notice that ads don’t seem to reliably load in a specific case.

Before I start:

  • I verified that the AdSense code is present on the right places in the HTML, so I do not believe this is a bug in discourse-adplugin.
  • I verified that this happens in the default theme.
  • I’m on the latest build.

Here’s what I observe:

  • Ads load correctly if they’re initially in view. For example, if you load to the top of a page (like here), the ad displays fine.
  • If you land in the middle of a longer page and scroll to any location that is supposed to hold an ad, it’s often empty. For example, start on this post of the same topic and scroll to the top (or the bottom) of the page - the ad block that was visible when you used the previous link is now gone at least half the time.
  • The same happens to ‘in post stream’ ads (which we have set to once per 25 posts).

I first used responsive ads and suspected they might not get rendered as they didn’t ‘exist’ yet, so Google can’t get their size. I replaced them with fixed-size but the problem remains.

Has anyone else experienced this same issue? Any ideas what’s causing this?

Edit: And of course, the links I presented above now work fine :frowning: Try any other sufficiently long topic on that site though and you’re likely to see the same issue. Could it be that Google needs more time to crawl my topics?

Personal topic pinning

Hi,

I wanted to suggest the ability for users to pin topics just for themselves. There are certain topics I follow regularly and bookmarks just don’t cut it. I’d like access to them at the top of my feed.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Issue with email and overall site structure

@awb715 wrote:

My discourse site will be “connect.example.com” and I will have a main landing page of example.com.

I feel the structure of my site poses challenges because I would like the admin email addresses to come be just “Example.com” while the discourse instance will be pointing to connect.example.com. Is this a issue?

I have novice programming skills so if anyone who helps configure sites is available I would love to talk to them about all these questions and additional customizations i would like to add.

Thank you!

Possible to remove/suppress small_action

@jordan1909 wrote:

Is it possible to delete the add_small_action item that shows up in some cases.

I have written a plugin that will round-robin assign our support team to specific support cases, the issue however is if the topic gets moved to another category I reassign the owner, this could then result in quite a few unassign/assigned small_actions on the topic.

Can I delete these easily?

Allow '{comment_url}' to be used when customizing comments using wpd_comment_body filter

Hello all,
I was working on customizing the comment content using wpd_comment_body filter. One of the requirements was to add the link to the exact comment in the end of the comment posted in wordpress site. I made a small tweak in the plugin and made a PR. Can you please take a look :slight_smile:

When groups filter has no matches, filter field disappears

@Stephen wrote:

When filtering the members of a group by username or email using the field above the users list, the following happens:

enter text which matches no users:

The filter field disappears, and the message improperly suggests the group is empty, rather than there being no users matching the filter.

The filter can’t be corrected either, because the field is gone. The user is forced to browse back to the group view without a filter, or to edit the filter which appears in the URL.

Rebuilt Admin Dashboard

I just upgraded my instance of discourse to version 2.0.0.beta10 and upon first glance of the admin dashboard, it’s absolutely wonderful! I love being able to have a quick glance at the health of my community by graphs before I navigate to anything else. All relevant stat graphs that I would need are right there! Excellent work from the team and kudos are definitely deserved on the beta 10 release.

Mix of Wordpress blog comments, public and hidden Discourse threads?

0

@Tjeef wrote:

I have been searching around, and not being able to find a clear answer to this. (Partly maybe also because I am not so familiar with the Discourse terminology yet). I am assessing usecases in the hope that Discourse can support them.).

(I have seen the terms public/hidden categories as well as public/private forum used - I am not sure what applies here. I have also seen a comment somewhere that the WP-Discourse plugin could not handle a “private forum”. I am not sure if that is needed here - but I just wish to clarify if I can do what I need to).

The use case is that I wish to “unite” users/comments from a closed Discourse community with “outsiders” through WP posts. (First stage this would simply be blog posts. Later, it could probably also be WP posts used in an unrelated membership plugin on the WP site).
But the WP users/comments are outsiders/foreigners to the Discourse insider community.

By using Discourse as comment system, and syncing comments both ways, the idea is to encourage the WP outsiders to get involved. (More likely to participate / get responses when the insiders are active on the same posts).

Q1: The neatest looking would be if the outsiders only see the comments in WP and not the forum thread. Is this possible,and if so, what setting would be required? (What if it is not public/visible - can the plugin still sync comments with it?).

Q2: If this is not possible, I guess the simpler solution is that this “WP forum thread” would be in a category which is public/visible, while the rest of the insider community would be in private/hidden categories - both accessible to the insiders?

(We keep SSO out of the use case for simplicity).

Q3: So the overall question is: How to enable the insiders and outsiders to mingle in that “WP comment zone” - and whether that zone in Discourse needs to be visible in general, or if everything can be closed/hidden, except for the comments synced to the WP post?

This was tricky to write, without fully knowing the vocabulary. I hope it made sense.

Big tmp backup dir

@mbajur wrote:

Hello,

recently i observed that one of the docker-discourse-related directories takes 6GB of space and i’m not sure what for. I’m basically having trouble with my hard-drive being out-of-space (it’s a 50 GB SSD) and am now trying to find a reason.

This 6GB directory is

/var/lib/docker/overlay2/d3efebc7ffea4a0aaea51f1b8c56358020ffa4be8d6cb6c59c49fcaa56f568aa/merged/var/www/discourse/tmp/backups/default

and all i can see in there are some old backup data files no longer needed. Is that normal? Can i just remove them? Is there any recommended way of clearing such caches? I don’t want to break something.

Thanks in advance.

How to remove the "topics _per week_" count?

@Anton1 wrote:

I have an active but low traffic forum. How can I remove the “topics per week” counter? Seeing “1 topic per week” or so in a category makes the forum look a bit deserted.

Ideally I would just have a “Topics” counter without any time limitation, just the plain number of topics per category. Is there a switch for this?

To clarify: I am talking about the counter on the category page, which I use as default homepage (this page: Categories - Discourse Meta )

Thanks,
Anton

Hi all,

We are aiming to add a PM inbox link to the top header and having two different links for the same thing so close to each other is not going to work too well.

Something silly for the weekend (and the Lounge)

After whitelisting the URL, I embedded this iframe into a post in the Lounge for a bit of fun.

Result?: A fully working piece of classic Interactive Fiction embedded in a post that doesn’t look too out of place :slight_smile: (although you do need to manually scroll)

Why?: because you can

<iframe src="https://iplayif.com/?story=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.douglasadams.com%2Fcreations%2Fhhgg.z3" width="800" height="800" frameborder="0"></iframe>

Feel free to pull me up on security if you believe this is opening a hole … but iplayif.com is legit, I believe, here’s its GitHub page

In case you are not a Douglas Adams fan, you can find much more great work here.

Building a more open internet

Saw this tweet this morning:

Happy to see people sharing knowledge in places that are:

  1. Open to anyone
  2. Referenced by a URL
  3. Referenced by a URL that is human readable
  4. Open for comment and discussion
  5. Based on Open Source technology
  6. Can be exported

e.g.

  1. Not just in a Slack walled garden interleaved with seven other conversations
  2. Not just in an email with limited recipients
  3. Not just on a mailing list with a random URL
  4. Not just on GitHub or Reddit with a single company in control of the data

But nice that it’s easy to share it there too once it’s posted on Discourse.

This project and others that share it’s characteristics have a real impact on the world. Thanks for everyone who has continued to lead its development, contribute, and adopt it for their communities.

BAD CSRF Response When Trying to Delete User by API

@ATPJD wrote:

I am trying to delete a user by API following the docs.

We use SSO, which seems to make the API require a cookie header coming from SSO authentication. I got past that, and as long as I supply the cookie, other types of actions work fine by GET. But the DELETE results in this “BAD CSRF” error.

Maybe a bug? I don’t even know where to begin troubleshooting this. Any help appreciated.

Issue when accessing Badge and Preferences Tab

0

@Maxence wrote:

Hi there,

We have a community of manga lovers built around a Discourse discussion forum.

The Discourse instance is installed in a dedicated server from Scaleway (www.scaleway.com) running Ubuntu 16.04. We do not used the pre-made Discourse disk image provided by Scaleway but we installed and configured the instance from scratch thanks to your Digital Ocean tutorial.

The name is Mirage Team and the forum can be accessed at www.mirage-team.eu.

Everything is working fine unless a very annoying bug that does not allow us to go to our badge and preferences tab of the profile page.

By clicking on one of those two links, Discourse show us a 500 error page :

The error showed above made me think it was related to the badge section so I went to the logs page to see if I could get another information about the error and saw this :

As far as I can understand, it seems that we want to get the “bio_raw” information of the user but we can’t because the var seem to be NULL and not an object as expected by the code ?

Just to be sure that it was related to badges, I have disabled every badge from the badge page in the administration panel (one by one because I didn’t know about the main “disable badge” option in the preferences :sweat_smile: ) and after that, the preferences pane became available and we are able to see the content of this page (the badge button pane disappeared as it should since we do not have any badge to show into)

I started to think this is something related to some wrong data in one of the table in the database so I installed the data explorer plugin and tried to search for something inconsistent in the data related to my personal user but can’t find anything that seems weird at first glance.

Like you can see, I have a few badges linked to my account but I don’t know if something is weird there or should not be there (maybe one of the dev will see directly if something is wrong ? ) :

Also, the instance is running the latest version updated yesterday :

I also have another instance in another Scaleway server and everything is working fine there, that’s why I thought that maybe I have something wrong somewhere in the database.

I can provide you any other information that you need to help me, thanks by advance for your time and help on this matter.

Regards.
