Weird Google(and page numbering) behaviour

Johan wrote:

Actually, I am not sure if this is a bug(aka something that we can do about), but when google crawls Discourse forums it seems to crawl enormous amounts of pages for each topic.

For example, check this search:
https://www.google.se/#q=site:meta.discourse.org+inurl:5000000.
It has results for page numbers over 5 million, and I doubt topics are that long.

When you click the URLs you end up at the topic with no posts, and these links sometimes end up as top result in searches.

Avatars not showing with Adblock enabled

David Liaw wrote:

It's probably a bug with adblock, but at this point I'm not really sure. But either way when Adblock is enabled this is what is shown (avatars are also missing from topics/posts):

Only a couple avatars are shown.

Disable it for this domain (or altogether) it reverts backs to normal:

This happened quite some time ago but thought nothing of it at the time, but I finally got irritated at it and decided to figure out what was happening.

Edit: Only seems to happen when the Antisocial filter is activated (which removes social buttons).

Approve / reject pending users button obscured by composer draft

David McClure wrote:

While you have a draft in progress, even while minimized, it obscures the 'Apporve' and 'Reject' buttons on the Pending Users page. (Minor issue)

I was in the middle writing a topic when I got a notification that there were a handful of users who had signed up but were waiting to be approved.

I went to the Admin / Users / Pending page, checked off the boxes and couldn't find the button to approve them.

I tried minimizing the composer draft but still couldn't see the buttons.

I was able to see the buttons after posting the topic.

I just tried upgrading via the Admin (Like I have for the last many updates) but this time after doing it I get a blank screen.

I will look to do the cmd line update that I have done before but I was running on about 2 months of smooth updates so did not know if this might be a glitch and wanted to highlight it.

Hi guys,

I just upgraded my Docker Manager first... all went well.

Then I upgraded Discourse from 0.9.9.3 to 0.9.9.4 and I got this error:

The thing is, my forum admin panel still says I need to upgrade:

But my Docker Manager now says I'm UP TO DATE:

I would appreciate a little guidance on what to do via remote SSH login. Thanks guys!

EDIT: It worked, thanks!

While we are working out some initial bugs, we would like to moderate all topics/posts to the forum.

Is this possible? I searched for "Moderate", "How to moderate", etc and couldn't find the answer.

Can iNaturalist work with Discourse?

$

Nick Mirro wrote:

Hello. iNaturalist (written in ruby) is currently lacking a member discussion feature. A site-wide, moderated community is not needed (yet). That is their view because of moderation and other things. I think there is some agreement that a discussion feature is really needed at the individual "project" level.

I am hunting around for community software that could potentially mesh with iNaturalist, and that could be configured to run as instances, one for each project. A typical inat "project" might have 10 members and each instance might have their own 0 or 1 category level discussion section. That way the 10 member accounts associated with the project would alone have access (no moderation needed).

Any possibility with discourse? Can it be used in part or somehow bridged to work? If Discourse is not a good match, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There is a chance you are experiencing a man-in-the-middle attack, but most
likely your system doesn't have the CA certificates needed for verification. For
information about OpenSSL certificates, see bit.ly/ruby-ssl. To connect without
using SSL, edit your Gemfile sources and change 'https' to 'http'.

Data-bindattr attributes

To me it seems foolish or at least redundant, at best, to incorporate the value as part of the name.
I would probably name the attributes "data-bindattr" but I don't know if that would break Ember.

Move blog embed settings to category settings and allow embedding multiple discourse in multiple other sites?

Tobias Eigen wrote:

My organization has multiple blogs and I would like to embed discourse in more than one of them. Right now this appears to not be possible since only one blog can be configured for embedding in the admin settings. A solution for this would be to move the embedding options into the category settings and allow any category to be embeddable in a blog elsewhere. What do you think?

I think it would be a great idea for Discourse Team to attend and present Discourse to the public. It will help Discourse expend in term of making good connections and to allow other forum webmasters, especially big boards to know about it.

Will you be there ? If not, will you register to attend it ? @neil @codinghorror @sam

Bug with embedded discourse - one blog post is not getting a topic generated, errors in sidekiq

Tobias Eigen wrote:

I am struggling with an odd issue with discourse embedded in my blog. It is working fine generally, but there is one post (one that I actualyl want to start a discussion about!) that is not working at all. At the bottom of the post I see "Loading Discussion..." message and nothing is happening. In Discourse there is no topic for the post. In Sidekiq I am getting lots of errors like this:

NoMethodError: undefined method `private_message?' for nil:NilClass

Any ideas what I can do/look at? Do I need to delete the post and recreate it? What's going on?

Timestamp of posts added by email is from moment added to database not timestamp in email header

$

Tobias Eigen wrote:

I thought using the email in feature would be an ideal way to import the back history of a mailing list into discourse by copying all the messages into the inbox of the mailbox being polled, but unfortunately this does not work as well as I hoped because the timestamp is incorrect - like with posts added via a blog's RSS, the timestamp for the post is not taken from the header of the email but is the moment the post is added to the database.

I also am noticing that it is not parsing all emails well (I am getting error messages) and it also posts are not correctly threaded. So it is not using email header info to keep threads together. It's still importing so we'll see what happens. smile
