Public data dumps

I'd like to propose a public data export feature similar to Stack Exchange's. This is not the same as the backup feature, because it requires sanitizing all private user data first. Both JSON and HTML export formats would be great.

This is useful for:

  • CC-licensed content to be made available more easily
  • users to feel more comfortable knowing that the site can't suddenly disappear with all their content
  • data analysis, etc.

Let me know what you think.

  1. Do a search.
  2. Click on a search result entry in the pop-up window.
  3. On the new page, click again in the search field.

Current behaviour: search has been reset. I have to search again for the same word(s) if I want to get back the results.

Previous behaviour: the search pop-up window remained filled with the previous search results. Useful for browsing through the other results in the list.

Having discourse under apache reverse proxy

Jakub Ryška wrote:

I have installed discourse docker on my server and it is bound to port :8880. When I access it in browser on that port like http://myserver:8880, it works fine. But I don't want to bind the real world app to that port, but use standart 80. So I tried to put the server under apache reverse-proxy. Here is the immortant part of discourse.conf.

ServerName myserver

ProxyPass / http://localhost:8880/
ProxyPassReverse / http://localhost:8880/

It works, but with a major glitch, every request is recognized as it was from mobile device, I see this style linked:

<link href="/uploads/stylesheet-cache/mobile_df9856b3a498598d8339e91059a01f122f64728b.css" media="screen" rel="stylesheet" />

When I access the server directly via :8880, then I see the expected desktop style:

<link href="/uploads/stylesheet-cache/desktop_df9856b3a498598d8339e91059a01f122f64728b.css" media="screen" rel="stylesheet" />

Do you know, what should I alter in order to make it work correcly, recognize desktop device as desktop and not as mobile one?

Discourse Update-Script

All sorts of issues with Discourse & Docker

1) Why is every thread here closed? There are several relevant threads where I feel like it would make more sense to post my individual questions, but every old thread is closed (whether or not the problem was actually solved). Doesn't this make it hard to identify when several people are having the same problem?

2) The install directions are no good. I had to cobble together answers from multiple sets of directions to get it working. ALSO, why in the world would I ever run a remote script without seeing its contents? This is the worst installation method ever.

3) I eventually got Docker & Discourse running. Everything was fine, except I couldn't SSH into the docker container. I've seen multiple statements that this is supposed to be "automatic" now. It's not. How do I fix it? I've seen comments about copying a key somewhere, but no one says where I get the key (or even what key it is).

4) The upgrade doesn't work. It looks to me like it's trying to do operations that require admin privileges without using sudo. Normally I would just SSH and run the commands with sudo myself, but I can't (see 3).

Seriously regretting choosing this "modern" forum solution instead of an old standby.

P.S. I'm a professional linux admin and systems analyst. If I have this much trouble, what is the rest of the planet going to do?

How to change Daily limit on new topics

ampburner wrote:

Continuing the discussion from What do user trust levels do?:

My users (basic) cannot post more than X new topics - they are getting the following message:

We have a daily limit on how many times that action can be taken. Please wait 22 hours before trying again.

Is there a way I can change these thresholds? (max number of topics they are allowed to create per day)?
I can't find the setting for that.

Also what are the default thresholds? this is something that could be added to the original topic (documentation)

They're too restrictive for my needs.

Icons are amazing tools. They can convey meaning in seconds. That's why I think they should be all over the place. Some important places that I think are lacking:

Also, worth mentioning a small idea I had for the Log Out button. I think it could be applied to categories in the Hamburger Drop Down too.

Muted categories are too atomic

Sam Saffron wrote:

When you mute a category now, every new topic in the category is muted.

Our implementation is actually a bit simpler and diverges from the explenation.

Muted Categories:

  • Are suppressed from latest list.
  • All new topics in the muted category have "muted" state for the user.

I think this behavior is incorrect.

Wanting to mute a topic is a "last resort", you use it as an ejector seat for a topic you are done with. "I am out of here, don't want to hear from you ever again". No more @mention no more anything from that topic.

Muting a topic should not be encouraged by the system as it can break a lot of social aspects.

Instead, I think muting categories should be much more light weight, change it to

Muted Categories:

  • Are suppressed from latest list.

Simple, and far more useful.

Hiding Sub-Category Pin Topics

Benjamin Kampmann wrote:

Heyah,

I'm not a big fan of pinned topics to be honest. I feel they are a misused Forum-Way of collecting FAQ and category description (which is exactly the way we are handling them here, too). Both of which might be important to the novice (not logged in and/or trust-level-1) but are mostly annoyance to the advanced user and take up all this great top-space for so many lists. And though I'd personally loved to see a category-banner-topic like the application pin banner (including the dismissal feature – oh, yes please!), I think the least we can do is let a category to be configured to not include all it's sub-category pins.

Here on meta we don't have any category that has so many subcategories that it ever matters but on our forum here, where every local group gets their own sub-category (so you can more easily mute non-relevant content) and a growing number of that is very much wanted, the growing number of pinned category descriptions are just a pure pain:

I have no relevant content above the fold here. Though it is a great meta-category to see what is going on in each chapter. But with four (and potentially more) pins, it is a completely useless view. Can we please have the option to exclude sub-category-pins for a parent category?

(Not sure whether this is supposed to be in UI/UX or features. You decide).

Wanted: Simple mail server solution for category-specific "email in" functionality

Thanks for providing this such awesome open source software. I've set up an instance and gone to work at customizing it for the needs to my community. There's one last thing I haven't yet solved.

GMail is an adequate solution for "reply-by-email" functionality, but AFAIK it doesn't support category-specific "email-in" functionality.

Am I mistaken?

What simple mail server solutions are Discourse hosts using to get this functionality working?

(I'm using the standalone Docker installation (0.9.9.9) on Google Compute Engine)
