Strange list formatting with markdown

I copy&paste a list via firefox under win8 and get this:

  • ~/syncthing_test/
      instance1/

    /syncthing_configs/**config.xml**
      instance2/

    /syncthing_configs/**config.xml**

copy the same content into code tags looks like this:

* ~/syncthing_test/
  * instance1/
    * /syncthing_configs/**config.xml**
  * instance2/
    * /syncthing_configs/**config.xml**

Auto-convert text to lists

When text like this is selected:

A
B
C

And the list icons () are hit, it should result in this:

  1. A
  2. B
  3. C

Instead of what it does now:

  1. A B C

So basically, break each line into a bullet automatically.

Migrating to Discourse from another Forum software

Arpit Jalan wrote:

So you want to migrate your existing forum to Discourse? That's great! Let's get started!

Discourse currently provide import scripts for bbPress, Drupal & Kunena/Joomla. The import scripts are available under script/import_scripts folder.

The bbpress and Drupal import script requires database dump to be present and imported in your MySQL database. In the case of the Kunena/Jooma script, a csv file with the users from Joomla is currently required. In the future, the script can be improved by changing it to read from the Joomla users table in MySQL.

We highly recommend to read the script before performing import, as the script is meant for developers. Near the top of the scripts, a connection is made to the MySQL database containing the source data. At a minimum, the connection settings will need to be changed. You may also want to change the SQL queries that fetch the data to import into Discourse. For example, if you want to exclude really old posts, you can add a condition to the where clauses.

After reviewing and modifying, to run the bbPress import script you will do:

cd path/to/your/discourse_folder
ruby script/import_scripts/bbpress.rb

This process will be similar for other import scripts.

The import scripts are work in progress, new import scripts will be added over time. Contributions are welcome!

Category setting: new topics are wiki by default

Wiki posts are awesome, especially for categories like documentation and FAQ. It would be sweet if a category could be set up so that new topics are wiki by default. Currently you'd have to have an admin (moderator?) notice the new post and wikify it.

Can anyone help me with this?

I just need to move an existing Discourse instance created for a grassroots activist organization to a new subdomain.

Hello folks,

I am currently looking for a way to hack this panel right here in order to embed an extra button or two.

Where are those buttons located in the sourcecode ? are they in an .erb file? .es6 file ? or .rb file?

Thank you for reading .

How to disable password auth once user is created (SSO only)?

Aahan Krish wrote:

Lets say I just installed Discourse. The first admin user I create will have to register with a password. Once registered and in, I enable SSO (e.g. Google), then logout and sign-in using my Google account.

For future logins:

  1. I want the user to be able to sign-in only via SSO and his password should be removed such that he had never logged in with a password (i.e. like a new user who registered via SSO).

  2. But the user can use the "Forgot password" feature to create a password login again.

Is this possible? If so, how do I got about doing this?

As of now, I am creating a new user via SSO, turning him into admin, and deleting the password authenticated old admin user. I don't like this, unless this is the only safe way to do it.

Fix for 'WARNING: No swap limit support' error when bootstrapping Discourse?

Aahan Krish wrote:

Been away from Discourse for a long time, and am setting up Discourse on a VM (1GB RAM with 2GB swap & swappiness set to 10) following this tutorial: https://github.com/discourse/discourse/blob/master/docs/INSTALL-digital-ocean.md

Everything seems to be fine, until I run the command to start bootstrapping Discourse:

./launcher bootstrap app

Which is when I noticed this error:

WARNING: No swap limit support

The bootstrapping process continued though, and my Discourse forum is running just fine as well. But why the error? I setup swap just fine and even double checked with free -m and swapon -s commands.

What am I missing? (I couldn't find any specific threads in the forum discussing this problem.)

Questions about default Discourse design and behavior

Jeff Atwood wrote:

Well, one of my forum mates Dome 500 recommended these, so I'm posting them here:

We need clear identification of threads with new posts and stickies
We need a SEPARATION in the thread overview, the way it is at the moment threads are just one over another without any line to separate them, it kind of looks pretty chaotic
No post restrictions
The forum threads/posts themselves should also have separating lines like the ones we have here on the forums
I hope for a quote and multi-quote function
Can we do something about that format of the page, because everything screams "mobile" and I really hate mobile-styled forums or pages (a la twitter). I don't mind a mobile VERSION but this forum looks pretty "mobile" even with the normal version

SSL Error when using custom sign-on

Caleb Richard wrote:

Hi all,

On my instance of discourse, I currently have a custom OAuth login method. However, Discourse seems to not trust the SSL certificate from my login method. This particular login is used on other sites, so I know the problem is not an invalid SSL certificate. I've seen some threads where others have simply disabled SSL for login. For the time being, I have done the same, and login works.

IMPORTANT: To anyone reading this who has a similar problem, disabling SSL is a terrible, non-permanent solution with serious security drawbacks.

So, knowing that disabling SSL is not a good way to fix the issue, has anyone else had experience with this issue? Or could anyone point me to how discourse handles SSL so I could better understand how to solve this problem?

Thanks for all your help.

Go nominate Discourse on CMS Critic

Erlend Sogge Heggen wrote:

Figured it can't hurt to get Discourse into the Critic's Choice CMS Awards:

http://awards.cmscritic.com/nominate/

I nominated it for both "Best Free Forum" and "Best Commercial Forum" because frankly that distinction is pretty dumb and you'll notice none of the other CMS categories are grouped like that (though upon further inspection they do have a rather convoluted directory - smells of legacy).

I'll be sending the cmscritic.com Editors a link to this thread as I'd like to make a point:

Descriptors like "Free, Proprietary and Commercial" frequently fail to draw a clear line between the Product and the Service, which are two very different things. The two should always be reviewed separately.

Discourse is free, open source software, but it's also clearly a serious commercial undertaking, competing in the exact same space as the likes of IP.Board and VBulletin, vying for market share. I don't see any reason to put their products in different piles.

It's quite simple. If you need to fork out a minimum of $175 to self-host IP.Board, Discourse wins the "Price" round hands down. That still leaves a bunch of other aspects of each product offering to be reviewed.

Searching topic titles with partial word matches

Not really a bug, but figured this would be worth having in the records when it's time for another round of search polish.

Just made a search with the following term: "names on top". Here's what I got:

I was looking for the thread called "Usernames on top, lifting username length restrictions".

I'm fully aware that search is hell'a difficult and the Discourse search gets me what I want 90% of the time, but this seems like a case of Discourse trying to be too clever. By that I mean, a dumber "character match %" search would have gotten me what I wanted in this case.

I'd like to see an option in the preferences to "always send digests" at the desired frequency no matter what, even if the user has been on the forum recently. I've been seeing what is sent to others from my discourse on mandrill and am feeling jealous! Even if I've been visiting it does not mean I am up to date on all the discussions, and I am sometimes sloppy about wrapping up loose ends, so I'd like to get the newsletter anyway.

Hey! I am new to Discourse , and was following the installation steps - I figured out that during th launching of bootstrap it gives me a docker version conflict. Can someone help because during docker installation , i am getting the following error :

Either your platform is not easily detectable, is not supported by this installer script (yet - PRs welcome!), or does not yet have a package for Docker. Please visit the following URL for more detailed installation instructions:

Secondly , can someone also tell me where will i find the code , if i want to tweak in something ?

Discourse change title to pretty but it avoids non english characters

It leaves non english characters Uppercase which make topic title more ugly then it was.

Failed to bootstrap with Google Calendar plugin

David García-Navas wrote:

I'm very happy that it is so easy to install plugins by modifying the app.yml, so i installed mathjax, checkbox list... but i tried to install the Google Calendar plugin as seen in this topic (thanks to @zvikara ), and when i added the github url:

-git clone https://github.com/zvikara/discourse-google-calendar.git

...it fails to bootstrap when rebuild app.

I suppose that the plugin is outdated, isn't it? If so, i would open a topic in the marketplace category so someone could improve the plugin adapting it to Discourse 0.9.9.9, my organization needs it and we'd pay for it.
