Drag and drop from desktop vs other browser window

Chris Allick wrote:

I noticed when I dragged and dropped an image from the desktop it auto-uploaded and showed up in the preview, but when I dragged an image from another browser window it did nothing.

1) is there a way to turn that on in settings?
2) is there a way to use imgur for image uploads?
3) is there a way to have drag and dropped images from another browser window turn into an image tag?

"email in category" resets to 0

Using 0.9.9.10, non-docker install on Ubuntu 13.10 (I realise non-docker installs aren't supported, so if someone could reproduce that would be appreciated).

Setting "email in category" to a category name (e.g. meta) saves fine with the tick, but on a page reload, it has the value 0 and remains "overridden" in style. Emails continue to appear on the forum fine, I think just as uncategorised.

What should be going into this field?

Discourse taking over entire domain?

I recently installed Discourse succesfully on a box that also hosts some other sites of mine. Everything looked good and Discourse was available at discourse.mydomain.com. The problem is that if I now visit mydomain.com it also points to discourse and so do all my other sites. Does anyone have an idea as to what's going wrong?

Docker on Digital Ocean in production and local installation in Vagrant

Continuing the discussion from Installing discourse on local machine:

I'm interested in running a production version of Discourse using Docker on Digital Ocean. Right now I have a local installation on my laptop for development, testing, etc. My local installation uses Vagrant (which was easy and is working beautifully). Is there any way to use Docker on my local installation to mimic the future production version? I'm wondering how to take the changes I made locally and eventually put them into production. Is it easy to do even if the local and production installation methods were different?

How to delete user account?

Hi - I received this request today on my forums - how do I do it?

Hi, does anyone know how to shut down their account on this website?

If management only can do it, can you do this please?

Please also make sure ALL my content is removed under EU/US Privacy laws.

I cannot seem to find any setting to 'close account' which is incorrect on a website that you sign up online.

Anyone have advice or tips for using Discourse as a platform for project management?

In an effort to eat our own dogfood in the sense that we want our users to use the forum, we're trying to use the Staff category and other features for our own development projects.

I was curious if anyone had advice or experience with this. I know it's sort of an open question.

Discourse itself gets feedback using the meta forum of course but I thought maybe @codinghorror, @sam, and others might be able to share some workflow happening behind the scenes in private categories that might be useful.

Remove unactivated users

probus wrote:

Is there/should there be a way to remove user accounts that haven't been activated within a a certain time period?

I find that people sometimes register accounts with a wrong email or username and instead of changing those they simply reregister leaving the old account unactivated. Or their activation email doesn't arrive fast enough or at all (especially a problem with hotmail) and they try another, leaving the old one behind.

It isn't a huge problem, but those account come up with search and @name mentions.

Mobile theme vs responsive design

probus wrote:

There hasn't been much talk about the moble theme lately. To be honest, I think it lags way behind in design and that is partly because it is separate from the main theme.

  • What are the main differences and reasons why a separate mobile theme is needed?
  • Are there any plans for developing the mobile theme in the (near) future?

Forward an e-mail to create new topic on discourse?

Chris Allick wrote:

On my graduate school alumni list(which im trying to get to move to discourse) we get a lot of "call for participant" emails. What i'd like to do is forward that email to my discourse blog and auto-create a new topic.

Would this be possible through the API?
Maybe it's already possible?

Thanks!

Can I make a group a member of a group?

Walter Stabosz wrote:

We are using Discourse as a project team communication tool. We've set it up as follows:

  • One Category for each project
  • One Group for each Category
    • We give project clients access to the Category, but we don't want different clients to know about each other's.
  • We have a Group staff2 to which all employees are added.
    • I called it staff2 because for some reason, I cannot add Users to to the default staff group, only admins, and they get added automatically.

I'd like for all of our employees to be able to see all Categories, but it's cumbersome to have to manually add each user to each project Group. Is there a way I can add a Group as a member of another Group? i.e. add staff2 as a member of each project Group ?

I know that admins (and I think moderators) have access to all Categories, but I don't want all of our employees to be admins.

Link to a post within the same topic should load post dynamically (without reload)

Aahan Krish wrote:

Example:

The idea is, when you are viewing a topic where one of the posts is linked-to from another post within the same topic, clicking the link should load the post dynamically, just the way the "go to post" button does.

Currently, the page is reloaded before the user is taken to the post. I find this functionality very sensible, if not too complex to implement.

The "go to post" button I was referring to:

With S3 enabled, image's being redirected to respective S3 URLs

Aahan Krish wrote:

For example, go to my forum. On the home page, the URL to the "system" user's avatar you see is: https://discourse.aahan.me/user_avatar/discourse.aahan.me/system/25/3.png

Open the image in a new tab, and it redirects to: https://discourse-aahan-me.s3.amazonaws.com/40c02a6e22dbe066ce83e32e0b2d09e8dd2bad4643_25x25.png

Here's the thing. Even after enabling S3 for off-loading uploads to, the forum is still referencing the original URLs, instead of the S3 URL. This not only results in greater loading time, but also puts unnecessary load on the server.

Is this intended?

Does viewing an email notification increase topic view count?

Michael Downey wrote:

If a user opens an email notification, and perhaps even reads all of a thread via email, do any of those opens get tracked (image beacon?) and thereby increase the topic's view count shown on the web?

If no, should it? (I'd suggest that for accuracy, it should, in some way.)

Fix the fixed navbar?

Aahan Krish wrote:

As you can see, the fixed navbar can take up a disturbing amount of screen real estate, even on desktops. I've never liked the fixed navbars for this one reason. I consider this broken and I'd hereby like to propose a fix.

The navigation bar should work as follows:

The navbar is hidden once you start scrolling down. As soon as you scroll up a few pixels it is shown. After that, when you scroll down again it gets hidden. When you have reached the bottom of the page the navigation bar reappears.

This way, the fixed navbar would be perfect, even for mobile devices.

Email notification for edited posts in "mailing list mode"

Matt Toschlog wrote:

I don't think email notifications work correctly when posts are modified. (I'm set up to receive notification of all posts.) I've seen these two things happen:

  • I made a post, and got the notification. Then I modified the post and get a second notification with the original (pre-modification) text.

  • Someone made a post and I got the notification. Someone else posted a reply and I got the notification. The first user then modified his original post and I received a notification that included the text of the reply -- not the text of the first post (the one that was modified).

Docker Error on Start App

David Mackey wrote:

I'm having an issue similar to that described by @drye here. The difference is, bootstrap completes successfully - it is when I attempt to launch the app that I have an issue.

I'm running off a DigitalOcean VPS using Ubuntu. I type in the following:

But I received the following error:

WARNING: No swap limit support

Shows that I have nothing on port 3000. Here are the articles I've been referring to as I configure this:
