Ability to allow External Authentication on Invite

Sam Bauwens wrote:

Currently, when you invite someone, he is forced into the username/password authentication scheme, to make sure the person who creates the account is the invitee.

But in our use case we have opened the forum to the public and don't mind that the invitee logs in with another email than the one with which he was invited, we'd rather give him the ability to use his existing authentication from google, facebook etc.

I know we could just simply invite the user by sending him an email without using discourse invite functionality, but it's still a problem for other users who invite their friends.

New flag type: insisting

One thing that seems to pop up quite frequently is two (or more) people going on and on about some argument where everything has already been said many times before. Neither just wants to let the other one get last word. It might not be strictly off topic or inappropriate, but gets annoying really fast. You can always notify moderators, but I think this might deserve it's own flag type. What do you think?

Author of autoclose messages

Not sure if bug or intended behaviour...

In the specific instance of a category with auto-closing topics:

It would appear that if the topic starter is staff, then the auto-close message at the end of the topic is attributable to the topic starter, rather than @system.

Additionally (and probably more intentionally) if another staff member tweaks the autoclose time, the auto-close message is attributed to them, regardless of topic starter. This I can understand (audit/prevent abuse etc.)

I presume the behaviour described in the first part of this post is a side effect of that described in the second part.

Marking a "bug-fix" flag as resolved

Huon Wilson wrote:

There was a typo in this stickied intro post, which was brought to our attention by someone flagging it with a 'custom' flag. The typo was fixed, but we are unsure about the correct way to mark the flag as "resolved" (i.e. no trust penalties at all, and maybe a small bonus for the flagger).

The 4 responses I can see are:

  • agree
  • disagree
  • defer
  • delete

but none of those names (or their descriptions) seem appropriate. Furthermore, my reading of this implies that 'agree' and 'disagree' may cause inappropriate changes in users' trust (e.g. agreeing would dock trust from the user who submitted the post with the typo1, disagreeing would dock it from the user who flagged). I note that that post is quite old, and so may be out-of-date.

I also read over another thread2, but it's not 100% clear how that relates to the current implementation.

1 In this specific case, the submitter is 'system' and so is presumably unaffected by any trust penalties (so clicking 'agree' seems like it would work), but it would be nice to know the general solution.

Continuing the discussion from "text-transform: lowercase" in CSS prevents proper capitalization

wrote:

Sounds like an ugly hack that doesn't really scale if you decide that other translations should be lowercase / uppercase too.

Why not add three new CSS classes which contain only the three values of text-transform and apply them where needed? Then you would only need to add three new translations and you could use those wherever you want. Transifex allows adding instructions to each translation. That should help the translators...

New site - when to start Discourse blog comments & forums?

$

Nikolas wrote:

People say that you should do 2 things before starting a forum.

  1. Wait until you have X visitors per day on your site/blog
  2. Wait until you have regular comments on you site/blog

Since Discourse combines site/blog comments with the forums, the above equation is difficult. I can't have comments without launching Discourse first. If I allow normal WP comments at first, they'll vanish when I launch Discourse. If I launch Discourse right away, the forums will feel empty with no users. Plus it might be a hurdle to be asked to register on empty forums to comment on the site/blog.

So, which option is the best?

  1. Don't allow WP comments, don't launch Discourse until you have X visitors/day
  2. Allow WP comments, but don't launch Discourse until you have X visitors/day
  3. Launch Discourse right away

Update top menu helper text to reflect new UI, add categories, category exclusion syntax

Continuing the discussion from Excluding categories from the top view?:

I keep having to go back to this thread to remind myself how to exclude categories from the top menu. Here's how it looks to me now:

Would be helpful to change the helper text to something like:

Determine which items appear in the homepage navigation, and in what order.
Available options: latest new unread starred categories top read posted category/catagory name (exclude categories from top and latest using e.g. latest,-category name)

Are there more options available I am not aware of? Are external links possible? Links to FAQ pages etc?

To Repro:

  1. Reply to a post (without quoting)

  3. Open your post for edit and click the Quote button in the editor.
  4. A quote of the post being edited is inserted into the editor.

Adding jQuery to posts

I am learning how to use the plugin system. Starting with a very basic test plugin that just adds a border via jQuery to all images in a post. Here's my initializer file in the plugin, it's not actually adding the borders, though:

plugins/test/assets/javascripts/initializers/make-border.js.es6

import { decorateCooked } from 'discourse/lib/plugin-api';

export default {
  name: "make-border",
  initialize: function(container) {
    decorateCooked(container, function($elem) {
      $('img', $elem).css('border', "solid 2px red");

Google smtp may override discourse settings

Watchman Monitoring wrote:

A password reset emails was sent FROM our community address today, and I knew something was wrong.

As it turns out, a few months ago, when we moved to the docker setup, we were no longer using a local sendmail instance and just threw in google SMTP. (despite consumer_email_warning warnings)

The issue is that unless the gmail account is blessed to send as the Contact email or notification email those settings in discourse are overridden when the email is sent.

This process is likely a needed fix:
Send mail from a different address or alias

Hope this helps
