Include anonymous users in site stats

probus wrote:

The site stats in admin panel could do with a redesign. By providing a just a few key metrics there we could reduce the need to use google analytics etc. for many forum owners and provide them with better data to understand and develop their forums.

Why do I use google analytics? Mainly because it gives us info about total amount of site visitors, including anonymous users. I don't really understand the "users visits" currently. I suppose it's counting only logged in visitors.

Including anonymous users in the stats and especially if we could get something like reading time that I proposed in another topic, would give clear, easy to understand set of basic metrics for forum owners about the state of their forum without needing GA or other analytics suites.

There should be an option on the admin wrench.

Like wonkiness after changing ownership of my post to someone else

Tobias Eigen wrote:

I think like doesn't realize that I have changed the ownership of my post to someone else. When I then like the post, I get the "One person likes this. Like it too" option and not the red heart. If I click on the left part, my own picture shows up. If I click on the right part, I briefly get "undo like" and it goes back to "Like it too" immediately.

Probably easy to replicate but I can't do it on try or meta, obviously.

Better threading "several posts"

I'm quite positive I've posted about this myself, but I can't find it! :o

Have you thought of merging the posts into one, instead of giving a warning? If not, and if you don't buy into it, that's something I'd try to implement... I'm not sure there's any reason for several posts not merged, display-wise.

But it's not simply merging together. I'd still leave each response separated when they are displayed as thread. That's the main point.

Inversely, I'd split a multi-reply made in 1 post to conform with this behavior.

Add support for 'plain text' code blocks

A plain text option for fenced code blocks is a necessary option. Sometimes you just want plain text, sometimes it's to avoid choking on large blocks of text.

Creating a Plugin for the "Backups" Page

BRNDR wrote:

Hello,

I have been scouring the META forums trying to find a launching point for creating a plugin that would only affect the "backups" portion of the admin page. I am trying to setup a button that would download the backup files to an instance of Dropbox (could be extended to Google Drive/Box/etc).

Any help would be appreciated.

Invitations need to be visible by group, not individuals

Joshua Frank wrote:

Right now it seems that invitations come from individuals, and if someone sends one, that person has to follow up. I think there ought to be a way for all admins to see all invitations, take action on dead invitations, etc, and not require that each individual person be responsible for their own.

Visiting admin page first ignores CSS customizations

Vlad Magdalin wrote:

If I open up a fresh browser instance and go directly to http://forum.somedomain.com/admin, any custom CSS settings specified in the Customize tab are not loaded.

That's not a big deal, but navigating back to the forum home page (e.g. click on the "Forums" logo in the header) or to any topics seems to keep the non-customized layout. A full page refresh is required (on a non-admin page) to get the custom CSS to kick in.

Since the Admin pages already show custom CSS if visited after starting on the home page (or other non-admin pages), it would be nice if it was applied consistently.

Move to existing topic should show category

Michael Downey wrote:

As an admin (or moderator?) I want to be able to see the categories of posts when searching for a topic for which to move a post/reply, so I can more clearly identify the actual "correct" topic.

The current UI allows searching, but the results don't show category, and with similar topic titles, this can quickly become confusing:

Pinterest 'Widgets' inside a Topic

Eric Schleicher wrote:

Pinterest offers the ability 'embed' widgets in other sites that are linked to specific assets (pins/boards)within pinterest, and show some portion of them inline on an external (to pinterest) page.

We very much would like to use these in a topics to linking our communities pinning activity (on shared boards) directly to the discussion.

Looking to sort out how best to get these to work, not really sure where to start. given the markdown model. My first thought is that it's similar to oembed, but since it's javascript based, not really the same type of implementation.

If someone can comment on how we might go about getting this to work, either properly, or as a workaround. If not it would strike me as a feature request, which i'm also totally open to.

Some additional information that might be helpful

Here is the pinterest Widget Creator page:

the output looks something like this (paset here as an image since clearly won't paste as markdown)

here also is a sample board we would like to integrate through these widgets, for context.

Emoji Love (thanks discourse)

Jeff & Crew,

Congrats on Discourse! We're thrilled to have our set of emoji integrated into your new product. It's about time a company took the proper steps to develop a ground-up message board that fits current standards, wants and needs. I remember hacking my first message board 18 years ago with "sign my guestbook" scripts. You guys have done a fabulous job here. I've already told my crew that we need an emoji forum using this software. We don't have the traffic yet to support it yet, but hopefully soon it will.

My favorite discourse features so far...

  1. Quick register via Social Media
  2. Displaying responses with the thread
  3. Infinite page scrolling WITH a post # indicator
  4. Simple share/like/flag/bookmark options
  5. The most advanced post revisions view ever

I look forward to watching Discourse grow and soon become the new standard in message board software! thumbsup

For anyone interested in our open source emoji project, please checkout:

We're also seeking developers to join us in creating emoji keyboard apps (IOS/Droid) browser plug-ins. If anyone would like to work with us, please contact us!

How to speed up the Mobile experience?

cpradio wrote:

Okay, so this may be a special use case, but try loading the following on a mobile device.

It took over a minute and even after that, the whole thing is sketchy on my phone. I see threads like the one above being a staple in our environment, so the big question: "What can we do to solve this loading issue?"

I believe it is related to the code highlighting, but maybe something else is also part of the problem?
