Disabling emails for post updates and private messages

Ryan Bernier wrote:

I have an internal discourse site and its main purpose is to get a lot of information off of email. What I would like to do is turn off user's ability to request that replies to topics they are following be emailed directly to them. Likewise with PMs. The only setting I have found is to completely disable ALL outgoing email -- but that isn't necessary.

I've been digging through the settings and I'm starting to think that what I would like to do isn't possible in the current form of Discourse.

Edit: Sorry -- I should say I'm on version 1.1.0.beta3

What happens when you flag a post?

Adam Capriola wrote:

I'm having trouble understanding what exactly happens or is expected to happen when posts get flagged. I have issues on my forums with users posting unhelpful, spammy content (not spam as in the sense that Discourse terms it – "This post is an advertisement." – but as in it's irrelevant drivel that distracts from the discussion at hand).

I flag their posts as "Off-Topic" most of the time and select "Take Action." What I think happens is their post is hidden and they get a message to revise or delete it. If the user makes any change to their message it seems to be accepted as ok and the flag goes away.

The user will usually delete their post, but sometimes they will only make a slight edit and their post is still worthy of flagging, except I can't actually flag it again and can only send the user a message.

Am I following this correctly? It's annoying me because users don't seem to be understanding that receiving a flag is bad because they get rid of them so easily by making edits to their posts.

Blank / white page on iOS 7.1.1 - debug steps

Dean Taylor wrote:

I have one user on my forum currently complaining of a "white" screen when visiting my site via iPhone

  • iOS 7.1.1
  • Safari browser
  • Cache cleared
  • Private mode tested
  • Checked over WiFi and 3G
  • Tried turning the phone off and on again.

The same user visiting via iPad on the same WiFi network works correctly.

Personally I have checked the same process on my own iPhone but running a iOS 7.0.6, no problems.
And I can see via Google Analytics that I have at least 10 other iPhone users on today - none of whom are complaining of any issue (believe me I would hear it).

Many 50+ other users are active from Android and desktop browsers.

On the server:

  • I have checked /logs and can't see anything recent in there.
  • There aren't any extra plugins installed.
  • Updated to latest via docker update.

Here is what the page looks like to the user:

What are the steps for debugging this one?

Thanks.

Threading broken in Apple Mail

I'm using the forum at http://forum.formlabs.com and I subscribed to e-mail updates. The e-mails I get do not thread properly in Apple Mail (it works in Gmail's web interface).

I have been told that it would work as expected if the follow-up e-mails that Discourse sends out would not have a leading "Re: ". Is that something that formlabs has to fix, or is it something in Discourse?

Changing email settings like SMTP password

After getting discourse up and running. I unfortunately had to change my SMTP password, but I couldn't find a way to actually update my SMTP password/username. I know I had to do it before in my app.yml file but that was before the whole installation process.

Do I need to change app.yml and then re-do the whole installation process again? Is there an easier way of updating this setting?

Rake SSH 0.0.0.0 root no password when your topics fail to load

Here are steps I took to fix my discourse instance after I added tagger and a few other plugins to my app.yml and NOT having the root password to the discourse docker container.

Adding tagger without the rake steps resulted in this:

Text in the image above repeated below (for searching)

Sorry, we couldn't load that topic, possibly due to a connection problem. Please try again. If the problem persists, let us know. (maybe some other things could trigger this particular problem).

Using ./launcher ssh app didn't work because I don't have the root password (or didn't set it up). I believe I was prompted on install and answered no when prompted.

Instead I decided to use Sam's discourse backdoor command.

./launcher enter app (found below)

then I was able to run the github tagger commands here (installation blockquote area lines 4-7):

https://github.com/werweisswas/discourse-plugin-tagger#installation

rebuilt my app: ./launcher rebuild app then ran ./launcher start app

and like magic...

My posts resolved!

How do I disable or silence this particular message?

Some problems have been found with your installation of Discourse: Your server is running with less than 1 GB of total memory. At least 1 GB of memory is recommended.

If not possible that is ok, it is low priority but would like to make it disappear.

Bash shellshock is now patched in our base image

CVE-2014-6271 aka. bash "shellshock" is now patched in our Docker base image.

To update

cd /var/discourse
git pull
./launcher rebuild app

(replace /var/discourse with /var/docker if your installation is still in that directory.)

It is highly unlikely this vulnerability would effect Discourse as ENV injection is not really something we do, NGINX does or Unicorn does. However, better safe than sorry.

In other news, I also shrunk down our base image using docker squash so it should take less time to update it and less space.

Text weight changing on hover

I've noticed recently on the discourse forums that I frequent (atom, ember) that the text weight is constantly changing as I move the mouse around.

I'm using Safari 8 on Yosemite. Here's a link to a screen recording highlighting the issue (the effect is diminished a bit due to the downscaling): http://cl.ly/3J020x383O3z

Is this a bug or intended design?

Correcting multiple usernames associated with one email address

$

Stephen Nock wrote:

I have an end user who has two accounts associated with his email. The only difference in the accounts is that one character is uppercase in the email address of the second account.

ie:
username 1: FirstLast email 1: first123 [domain]
username 2: First_Last email 2: firSt123 [domain]

The user would prefer to only have one account, the original "username 1".

My first corrective action was to disable the second account and send a re-activation email for the original account. When using "email 1" to log in to the original account, it opens "username 2".

I asked the user to clear his cache. Same issue.

I deleted the posts and account associated with username/email 2. I sent another re-activation email to username/email 1.

The Activation email led to the original account, as intended. After logging out, the subsequent log-in attempt re-created and logged the user into the second account. The posts were still deleted from the second account.

I attempted to change the email address associated with the second account to a third, private email address. The user was still able to open the second account, despite the fact that the email had been changed and verified for the second account.

I suspended the account for username/email 2 for the maximum number of days (999?). The subsequent log-in attempt redirected the user to the main page, without logging in.

What gives?

How can I properly and indefinitely deactivate the second account and allow the user to access the original account and associated posts. He only has one email address to log in.

Hello. I'm working on replacing our existing forum with Discourse, and I need to create a new import script to migrate content. I've been looking at the existing import scripts, but I was wondering if there is any documentation on creating a new import script outside of reading through the script code. Any pointers are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The differences in edit for the automatic downloading of images shows a diff in the emoji when they haven't been changed.

This specific example where the post contained text, 2x emoji and a single image.

It is unexpected to see a diff on:

  1. the emoji near the top
  2. the emoji in the last line
  3. the text on the last line being highlighted as a diff
