The (manual) backup (didn't) failed

Issues:

  1. It doesn't actually appear to have failed - the tarball produced appears to be intact and has what I expected in it (the sql dump. Also had a meta file in there.)
  2. Which logs? The one that's visible in that screenshot? No indications there. /logs? Can't find anything there around the time of the backup actually relating to the backup.
  3. I didn't get notified - or if I was, I've no idea where to look for it.
  4. [Invalid date] in the log in the screenshot.

Enabling the tab key in markdown editor

Hank Stoever wrote:

Hey wonderful discourse maintainers,

I was wondering if there was a policy about enabling the tab key when editing markdown. I was recently composing a list and I wanted to indent, so I hit enter, tab, -, and then space, which triggered the "reply to topic" action unintentionally.

It would be fantastic if users could set a preference to enable the tab key inside text editors.

I'm sorry if this has been discussed before. What do people think?

Onebox embeds for pages that no longer exist do not update

Continuing the discussion from What smileys are supported?:

If you hop to the thread from which I continued this discussion, you will see that codinghorror posted a link to another meta.discourse.org thread that subsequently was deleted or no longer is accessible. The onebox embedded link in his post makes it appear as if the link is still valid.

While this may not be a bug, my expectation was that the thread would still be there. I wonder if it makes sense, upon the deletion of a thread (or post?) to find the posts that link to it and insert a comment in the one box that the link is invalid.

"Unread" language should not use tag

Michael Downey wrote:

Continuing the discussion from "You have no unread topics" is a lie:

Honestly I'd consider this a "bug", but it doesn't fit with the Meta description for the bug category, so....

Semantically, these paragraphs are not a "footer". People who do use <footer> for their HTML footer on Discourse along with custom CSS for that tag, will find that this text is formatted in a surprising way.

Yes, I could avoid using the footer tag in my footer, but that's not really resolving the issue.

Sticky footer for progress bar and topic buttons

David McClure wrote:

Wondering if it would make sense to have a sticky 'footer' too:

  1. anchors the progress bar
  2. gives a home for topic-action buttons
  3. potential new home for the 'category' badge(s)
  4. can get rid of the star above since it'd always be below

Posts link goes to current URL

boomzilla@TDWTF.com wrote:

We have normal topic lists and at the bottom of a topic, we have the suggested topics list. These include a column listing the number of posts in the suggested topic. The number of posts is a link that appears to go to...whatever is in the address bar when I entered (I have the update URL off, so I'm not sure how that affects things).

The activity column is a link to the topic. Should the posts link to the post or just not be a link?

Error response from daemon: Cannot start container [hash]: Cannot find child for /app

Peter Murray wrote:

I have a Discourse-via-Docker installation that has been working fine for several weeks. This morning I needed to restart it after our cloud server provider forcibly rebooted the machine to address the Xen hypervisor bug, but I'm now seeing a series of messages I've never seen before -- both the one about the Docker installation not using aufs (at the top) and the "cannot start container" message at the bottom. I have tried launcher rebuild app and that had no effect. The suggestions in the "discourse-docker-installation-without-aufs" topic didn't seem relevant.

$ sudo ./launcher start app

Overly aggresive emoji autocomplete

Emoji autocomplete is very aggressive. If you try to type a colon at the end of a paragraph:smile:

Translating Bosnian

The long version of me wrote:

How to use translation from Transifex as each string is translated (0% right now). With so much on my daily routine I have no time to sit down and translate Discourse all at once (or any good percentage). Is there possibility that I can start Bosnian translation and pull the language on weekly basis? I will slowly gather people to help me with translations.

I need basic translation urgently for some very specific things and I can't promote my community in English language. I am done playing with console and vi editor. Plus after each rebuild everything has to be repeated.

Bosnian, Serbian, Croatian and Montenegrin are 4 extremely similar languages and they could be called:

However, it is not politically correct so I am assuming that we will have 3-4 languages that will always stay unfinished.

Can I disable post warnings?

Joshua Frank wrote:

My users are complaining that some of the post warnings and suggestions are annoying them, such as the one that says (something like) "You are dominating this conversation. Please let others talk". They're adults and they know what they want to write, and I'm okay with that. This is an invitation only community and everyone is pretty civil (so far anyway). Is there a way to disable this feature?

I've found this error documented a few times here when setting up Discourse on Ubuntu, but the solution(reboot!) doesn't work for me. I've blown away my VM and re-installed, same error both times.

What am I doing wrong?

Is it possible to approve a user but not send an email?

Joshua Frank wrote:

Specifically, I've got a script that creates and approves a new user, but the system sends an approval email. For various reasons, I want the activation email to come from me personally. So, is there a way to do perform the following workflow via the API:

Approve a user, WITHOUT sending the email.
Get the link that the activation email WOULD HAVE SENT so that I can send it myself.
