Why there is "/t" and "/c" in the urls?

Hi,

I want to understand why there is "/t" for topics and "/c" for categories in the urls? and why there is "Id" in the urls? Why these urls are not simply cleaner like Quora.com urls?

In today's SEO we should use clean urls and its bad for SEO to have these pattern of url which contains Ids.

Can anybody help me understand why these pattern based urls considered in system design?

Flagging actions remove "unlisted" status from topic

TechnoBear wrote:

In an "unlisted" topic:

  1. If a post is hidden by flagging and then edited, not only is the post unhidden, but the "unlisted" status is removed from the topic. This occurs even when the edited post was not the first post, and no matter whether the edited post was made by the OP or not.
  2. If a post is flagged, and the flag disagreed with, the "unlisted" status is removed from the topic. It makes no difference whether or not the post was first hidden, nor does the post need to be by the OP.

Discourse docker container resource limits

Sam wrote:

Docker has a feature that allows you to set a CPU and RAM limit on a container. For example:

docker run busybox --cpuset="0,1" -m 4g

That would limit the container to cpu0 and cpu1 and 4 gigs of RAM.

Is there a way to configure this with the Discourse bootstrapping script? We have a big server but want to isolate each docker container using memory and cpu limits.

Discussing a topic with repeated official answers

hi jeff,
just a note/question... why are you that harsh and closed the last topic without a hint?
Don't you want normal users to pickup on discourse? Not everybody is a Rack/Rails guru and immediately understands the workings...
At first I was under the impression it's all about 'civilized discussions'.
If I'm wrong, please let me know what went wrong.
Cheers

BTW: The 'Create a new Topic' field doesn't update when typing (under OSX 10.10.1, Safari (latest))

I understand that this makes little sense, because invitation link subscribes the user, but in my case I would prefer if there is text bellow invitation:

To unsubscribe from these emails, visit your user preferences.

Once clicked it should logged them in and open user preference page. Is this possible?

Custom topic feed list

bunjee wrote:

Greetings discoursers,

Congratulations for the recent 1.1 release.

I'm trying to create a small topic feed list. It's supposed to display a few filtered topics.

To get started, I took a look at basic-topic-list.js.es6.

Here is my js.handlebars:

<div class="w-feed-list">
{{#each topic in topics}}
    <a href="{{unbound topic.lastUnreadUrl}}">{{{unbound topic.fancy_title}}}</a>
{{/each}}
</div>

I'm not sure how to implement this on the controller.js side:

import DiscourseController from 'discourse/controllers/controller';

export default DiscourseController.extend(
{
    topics: // Retrieving a filtered topic list here
});

Anyone could give me a hand on how to do it ?

Thanks and Happy hacking ♥.

Random jump to top of topic while pan (middle mouse) scrolling

0

Luke S wrote:

Something that I have been running into for a while. At random, while scrolling, discourse will dump me at the top of a topic with no warning. This can be from deep in the topic, sometimes dozens of posts down. Has happened on Meta (signed in) and www.what.thedailywtf.com. (Not signed in.) Happens scrolling up or down. To be more precise:

Symptoms:

  • When scrolling, sometimes my position in topic is reset to post 1.
  • There is sometimes a small lag, just enough to load the post if it is not in memory.
  • Only happens when scrolling, ie vertical position has to be changing. Never happens when I am sitting still.

System:
Win 7 pro.
Chrome stable (has been happening for some time, multiple Chrome releases)
Not tested in IE - I don't spend enough time with it to know.

How I Scroll:
I use a lenovo trackpoint, in scroll mode. (Tap center button, get scroll icon. Push trackpoint to scroll)
I have not tried this with a normal mouse, (don't have one) but the browser should be getting the same signals as if you hold down the center button and move your mouse

EDIT: Some quick googling suggests that this might be called pan scroll mode. I'm in the mode where:

  • If I move the mouse down a little, I scroll down slowly until I get to the bottom of the page.
  • Moving the mouse down a little further increases speed.
  • Moving back up brings be to a stop.
  • Further up, and I scroll up... etc.

Change background color of the comments on the blog site

Daniel Krizian wrote:

So I've managed to embed Discourse comments in my blog http://danielkrizian.github.io.

As can be seen in the link, the background color of the discourse div is white (where the Start Discussion button is).

Any way how I can make it grey so that comments visually melt with the rest of the page's grey background?

Help much appreciated.

More visual feedback immediately after a user action

Dean Taylor wrote:

More visual feedback please!

Currently many Discourse sites appear slow or perhaps slightly unresponsive to user actions.

For example if a user switches between Top and Categories there is a delay before loading indicator shows the first sign that something is happening.

The process should be:

  1. Visual indicator to user to let them know their action will be attempted.
  2. Process the user action.
  3. Optionally let the user know data has been has been received.
  4. Render the update.

I say let the user know data has been received because currently there is a rendering delay on many devices.

There are many places this should occur and is not currently.

Even something as simple as GMail's loading indicator would be a good start:

Sometimes performance improvements can be just about letting the user know something is actually happening.

Accounts created via SSO not activated

Paul Ceccato wrote:

I have had a few cases with users who have registered using SSO having their account created in a non-activated state.

They also do not have an avatar url, but all their other account details which are passed in via SSO are correct (name, id email etc)

I have to manually activate their accounts before they can post.

Any idea how this can happen? I thought the account would be automatically created as activated?

This guide assumes you used docker installation. This guide also has a version in Chinese. 中文指南

Add a template

Open your congiruation file, say, app.yml.

Add a reference to the china template:

templates:
  - "templates/postgres.template.yml"
  - "templates/redis.template.yml"
  - "templates/sshd.template.yml"
  - "templates/web.template.yml"
  - "templates/web.china.yml"

Bootstrap docker container

Rebuild your app

./launcher rebuild app

Or bootstrap:

./launcher bootstrap app

You are done! Everything should work then.
