Backup -> Restore migration bugs

Zsolt Ero wrote:

Situation: trying to migrate from DO to VULTR, clean Docker install on Ubuntu 14.04 x64. Using the admin interface Backup / Restore functionality to do the migration. On stable version (1.1.0), same app.yml file on both hosts.

Bug 1: At the middle / end of restore, it keeps spinning at "reconnecting to database". Nothing happens, manually reloading the website works. No idea if there were any errors (only a PM from system telling restore was successful).

Bug 2: After restore, the admin / settings part looked like it didn't update even after reloading the browser. Ticking / unticking the "only show overridden" checkbox and entering / clearing the filter somehow refreshed it. It looked really strange, only showing the "allow restore" function in the overridden values and having the standard Site_Settings warnings for some time after restoring.

Bug 3: By enabling read-only mode on the old and new server, I ended up in a locked out situation on the new server after restore. I couldn't log in as admin, as it was telling me that read-only is enabled. I cannot reproduce this issue, but it clearly happened after a Restore operation.

Finally a Q: if the hosts are exactly the same (Ubuntu 14.04, x64, Docker), isn't it better to just copy the shared folder over?

Customizing Localizations?

Jason Dreyzehner wrote:

I'm interested in customizing the language used to describe features of our Discourse installation.

Primarily, I'd like to rename the concept of "Categories" to something like "Rooms" to better match the language my userbase expects. There are also a number of other built-in strings that — with some slight tweaking — would significantly improve the usability of my site. These tweaks do not apply to most Discourse sites, so they aren't fit to be contributed back upstream.

I might be missing something obvious, is there a simple way to do this?

I've looked at few options:

CSS-based customization

With some CSS targeting magic, it seems like it's somewhat possible to overwrite language, though this is extremely hacky. Abandoned this quickly.

Javascript substitution

I've also looked at customizing language with somewhat-hacky javascript selection and swapping of innerHTML content, but this doesn't seem like a very elegant or sustainable solution.

Custom Localization / Localization Customization

This path seems to be the most promising, but I'm having trouble figuring out how to modify localizations in a way that doesn't require a lot of work from our operations team to keep updated. A plugin seems like a possibility, but as a more design-focused person (without direct access to the code), this also seems to be somewhat roundabout.

From a Discourse UX perspective, the right person to be customizing Discourse strings for a specific installation seems to be the same designer/developer who would be modifying the custom CSS/HTML, and might not be the person who is managing the server.

An Admin Settings interface to overwrite strings per localizations would really top-off Discourse's theme-ability. Has anyone considered or built something like this?

The ability to comment on posts (replies)

Rob Reed wrote:

I realize this might be too big of an ask but anyway...

I'd like the ability to add a comment to a reply that isn't part of (inline with) the general discussion. The distinction being that comments wouldn't advance the topic. They only address some point about a particular post. I can think of number of uses. Here are a several:

  1. Correcting an inaccuracy in a reply
  2. Disambiguating some point or fact
  3. Adding links or other supporting information without stretching out the discussion unnecessarily (Acting like a footnote)
  4. Administrative comments

It would be especially nice if these could be public or private (visible only to the commenter and author of the reply). But I think the idea has merit even without the ability to make them private.

I've tested this in Chrome 38 on Windows.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Visit a topic and click the Share button of a post (don't close the share dialog)
  2. Use the browser's back button
  3. Use the browser's forward button
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the page

An empty share dialog is visible in the left bottom corner. I didn't expect this dialog to be visible at all.

Category-symbols for all categories?

Ali wrote:

The category-list shows for the default "Staff" and "VIP" categories a nice little symbol before the category-name.

I mean this symbol "\f0c0" from the FontAwesome. (Can't post pictures because I'm a new user).

How about making it possible to assign images to all the categories? While it is quite some work to create matching graphics for all categories the navigation would be easier.

Would it otherwise be possible to accomplish this via CSS?

Google Universal Analytics: tracking not installed?

I compared the tracking-code with the one shown on my Discourse-installation http://djdiscourse.com. It is exactly the same.
Also in Google Anayltics the property has to correct default-url: http://djdiscourse.com

What am I missing here?

Making Non-English Category URL Understandable. Not like /c/13-category

wrote:

When we create a new category, let's say 'newsfeed', its url will be /c/newsfeed automatically.

However, when I create a category with Non-English characters, let's say '뉴스피드', its URL will be like /c/13-category.

Similarly, if I edit 'Uncategorized' to .... like '미분류', then I will have /c/1-category, not /c/uncategorized.

I want to keep the 'Uncategorized' URL as /c/uncategorized even if it translated.

Also, I want to change the '뉴스피드' category's URL from /c/13-category/c/newsfeed.

I don't want to use 13-category as a category's URL...

I want more distinctive URL!

Do you have any advice for this?

Ready to deploy Discourse instance based on LXC containers

0

raul wrote:

Hi All,

I am thrilled to let you know we have a Discourse 1.0.0 container based on LXC available for download and use. This makes deploying Discourse really easy for users.

Some context - We recently launched Flockport which provides ready to use instances of popular apps based on LXC containers. And we have a Discourse instance ready for download and use. See the Discourse container in action

Containers are like lightweight virtual machines, that let you run multiple Linux OS containers within your host OS. So you could be running a Debian host with for instance multiple Centos, Fedora, Ubuntu containers and vice versa. And the biggie is these containers are portable across any Linux system. So you can move your Discourse installation across servers with minimum fuss, just zip it and move!

Even better containers operate at near bare-metal speeds, there is no virtualization overhead. This is fantastic technology for end users and the only reason its not seen more widespread adoption and use is due to lack of marketing by the Ubuntu supported LXC project.

Linux containers (LXC) is supported natively in the Linux kernel. Most distributions have LXC packages available and its mostly an apt-get install away, and is fairly easy to use. See the walkthough below.

To use the Flockport Discourse container you need to install LXC and download the Discourse container . This frees you from installing and configuring web stacks and apps, just download a container and you are ready to go.

We have tons of guides and videos to help users along. There are currently over 40 apps that users can download and launch in seconds.

Here is a LXC walkthough

Ps: Discourse officially supports a Docker based install, so a lot of users will be aware of containers. Docker was based on the LXC project untill 0.9 when it switched to its own engine libcontainer. Docker containers and LXC containers are a bit different. Docker uses containers to build an app delivery platform and abstracts the container away to an app, while LXC gives you a full Linux environment like a lightweight VM, with some caveats.

LXC has been baking since 2009, and mainly developed by Daniel Lezcano, Serge Hallyn and Stephane Graber. It was merged into the Linux kernel around 2.6.32. Its been supported by Ubuntu since 2012, both Serge Hallyn and Stephane Graber work for Ubuntu. Given how useful the technology is for end users, its not seen as wide adoption mainly because of the low profile of the LXC project.

Mandrill account activation link issue with Safari

blaumeer wrote:

I configured one of my D instances with Mandrill for SMTP.

One of my users received an invitation email, clicked on the link, registered on the site and received the confirmation email containing a link which points to:

http://mandrillapp.com/track/click/1234567890/www.example.com?p=veryLONGKEY

She opened the confirmation email on her Gmail page using Safari on Apple iOS 8.1 (an iPad2) and clicked on the link, ant it failed with a cannot open page error.
Copy&pasting the same link in a new Safari tab gives the same error.
Copy&paste in Chrome on the same iPad works and the account is activated correctly.

Is that some anti-fraud technique in Safari?

Perhaps it is related to the "Track clicks" Mandrill setting in https://mandrillapp.com/settings/sending-options? To be extra sure I have disabled all click tracking now.

Did anybody have the same issue?

The exact Safari version is:
Mozilla/5.0 (iPad; CPU OS 8_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/600.1.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/8.0 Mobile/12B410 Safari/600.1.4

Also have any other of the top nav items gotten RSS support such as top?

Thanks

Any plans to do something with ScreenedURLs

Mittineague wrote:

Continuing the discussion from Can I completely block any posts with a particular URL?:

As discussed in the sourse topic, Blocking new registrations by IP can work.

Just the same "times 256" adds up quickly and many SPAMmers use more than one (or a few) IPs.

Blocking post display based on ScreenedURLs would be a very good thing IMHO
