What are your experiences with wp-discourse plugin and SSO?

I'm considering the WP-Discourse plugin to integrate my WP site with Discourse, but would be interested in understanding a bit better what the benefits and costs are. What do you lose exactly when you turn on SSO in terms of discourse functionality, and what do you gain? How are the WP and Discourse accounts linked? For example, can the user profile info like picture, username, email address, "about me" and location be shared across both platforms?

Thanks for any guidance. I'd love to be directed also any good examples of the wp-discourse plugin in action, with and without SSO.

[Paid] Online Forum Presence and Pseudo-Chat

I need quotes from anyone willing to write some things I need to move forward on my community forum projects. Both projects need an online presence and the ability for members to be able to send small shoutbox messages when needed.

  1. A plugin which pulls from the current page information for an online presence. This would be similar to WordPress' php function template tags() where each tag spits out an integer or a single sentence of some kind. These would be integers that say how many are currently viewing a topic and how many are replying to it. That would appear on the topic list for each topic, if the integer is >0. Inside each topic would say the same: how many are currently viewing and how many are currently replying. I would hope for inside the topic itself, the numbers would change in real-time.
    I would also like some metrics on how many members visited the forum in the past 24 hours, the number of topics and posts read, number of posts liked, number of posts made.

  2. A 'shoutbox' that uses a single topic as the source. The topic source can be changed from the admin CP, to make shoutbox archives. I am looking into this mockup for what I need.

I am only looking for quotes right now. I have a budget, but I'll see what I get, as well as donations from my community's members too. Still seeing if this concludes but if not implemented, then this all is moot, so I'm not putting down any funds yet. Just probing about for prices.

Thank you.

How to inject files/commands into Docker bootstrap process?

Kevin P. Fleming wrote:

I'm setting up a Discourse install using the Docker-based instructions; this is being done on a weird internal corporate network, that has both HTTP/HTTPS proxies and has a custom CA root certificate.

I've edited app.yml to add the http_proxy/https_proxy environment variables that are necessary to run Git to pull 'pups', but there don't seem to be any provisions for injecting additional files (and commands to run) before that command is run. I'll need to push a file into the container, add a line into a configuration file, and run 'update-ca-certificates' before the Git installation inside the container will be able to pull from an HTTPS connection to Github.

Alternatively, I could set Git's global configuration in the container to disable SSL certificate verification, and I'll probably edit the launcher script to do that as a temporary workaround. Just figured I'd post this here to record the situation, other people may run into a need for pushing additional files or commands into the container during the bootstrap.

Email parsing reply not correctly handling ----Original message---- marker.

Here is a modified example (to protect privacy):

I have two examples of this now with the same user.

I'm willing to send via PM the raw original email replies to a one of the Discourse Team to help resolve this.

Cheers,
Dean.

Legality of Discourse TOS

I am trying to gather some information about the legality of Discourse's default TOS that ships with all instances. I was talking about it with someone and they said that all TOSes can be defeated in court and are not binding contracts. While I figure no one on here is a lawyer, I suspect perhaps some here have had situations in the past that are related. Trying to get some truth to these statements.

JavaScript Error Reports - missing source, line and column number

I'm seeing the source, line and column number missing from most of the JavaScript error reports

Obviously these may either indicate an actual problem / incompatibility with a device.

Here is a sample:

Each of these is a different User Agent / browser:

  • Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 4.4.2; SM-N9005 Build/KOT49H) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/39.0.2171.93 Mobile Safari/537.36
  • Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/7.0; rv:11.0) like Gecko/20100101 Firefox/12.0
  • Mozilla/5.0 (iPad; CPU OS 7_1_2 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/537.51.2 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/7.0 Mobile/11D257 Safari/9537.53
  • Mozilla/5.0 (Android; Mobile; rv:36.0) Gecko/36.0 Firefox/36.0
  • Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 5.1; rv:34.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/34.0
  • Mozilla/5.0 (Windows Phone 8.1; ARM; Trident/7.0; Touch; rv:11.0; IEMobile/11.0; NOKIA; Lumia 620; Vodafone) like Gecko

I understand that some of these may not all be "supported" browsers.

I was thinking maybe something obvious is broken in the capture of the source, line and column number code.

Spoilers Do Not Work?

Joseph Pullan wrote:

Hi, on all of the discourse forums i've been on recently, it seems that the spoiler feature does not work. eg

<details><summary> Title of Spoiler </summary> content of spoiler </details>

usually results in a spoiler dropdown list, wheras now it just says:

Title of Spoiler content of spoiler

was this introduced in the latest version of discourse, or is it just a bug?

Thanks

Hello,

WP-Discourse is working fine with default post type. But with custom post type it's not working. After publishing the post the Custom Field only saves publish_to_discourse =1 and nothing else. check screenshot.

I have checked the post type is selected in plugin settings + checkbox is checked in post compose window.

Thanks,

Anand

Unable to Grant Admin or Grant Moderator to existing users

Marcus Baw wrote:

I'm having difficulty granting Admin or Moderator rights to existing users.

Everything else is Discourse is working 100% fine, but I don't seem to be able to save the changes after clicking on the 'Grant Admin' or 'Grant Moderator' button on the user management page. The buttons do change their legend to 'Revoke Admin' or 'Revoke Moderator' respectively, but following a page refresh they have reverted to their previous 'Grant' legend.

I tried granting admin privileges to an existing user using the command line, by following the instructions at https://meta.discourse.org/t/create-admin-account-from-console/17274, but this failed with the following stack trace:

I'm guessing that whatever is stopping the rake task from working has got something to do with the failure of setting Admin or Moderator via the GUI as well?

I've also tested this using the rake admin:create task to create a new user AND make them admin - it still fails with the same error.

my setup is vanilla: discourse-docker on Ubuntu 14 server on digital ocean 2 core, 2 gb, 40gb ssd

Any thoughts?

If it doesn't already exist I'm imagining simply being able to reply with

like

or

On the first line of the reply.

Perhaps the following lines could be a normally processed post?

Hi. I've updated lazyYT plugin with the following data:

    - replace:

    from: /data-width=\\"480\\" data-height=\\"270\\"/
    to: data-ratio=\"16:9\"

Now I need all the topics to pick up changes (manual edit+save works fine). Is there an easy way of doing it in console?

Make lazyYT plugin responsive easily

I had wanted to do similar, but found a simpler way of implementing what I wanted without messing with the ruby files.

Specifically this will make all embedded lazyYT Youtube videos responsive and 16:9 taking up most of the post width.

Add the following snippet to your Customize CSS section:

.lazyYT {
    height: 0 !important;
    width: 100% !important;
    padding-bottom: 56.25%;
}

The height should be adjusted, or better yet we should find a better way to style it that doesn't involve hard coded pixel based heights.
