Embedding comments in Single Page Application

@iolo wrote:

How does one go about embedding comments into a single page application(SPA)?

I took a look at this: http://eviltrout.com/2014/01/22/embedding-discourse.html and am currently trying to work out the best approach to implementing it into a Backbone application.

The problem I have had in the past with this approach (using Twitter) is that it only works once at page load, then on return to the page within the app, the content doesn't reappear as that code has already run.

Edit: I'm not sure if this falls under install or support

If your not trying to Monetizing Discourse then this topic
is not for you

My experience with adsense on Discourse hasn't been
great so far

So far my site costing me $10 a month
Adsense is estimating I will make $0.25 every 10000 views

I'm no where near a 1000 views yet.

Now I'm trying amazon affiliates

I like the new tag feature under development at the moment and I think
this could be useful for advertising

Any ideas to Monetize Discourse please share?

Thanks! blush

When pasting an image from the clipboard in Windows the following error can be seen

The same image saved as a PNG file (larger than 1024kb) and then uploaded uploads without error.

You can try it for yourself.

  1. Download the full-size original version of this image and save it to disk
  2. Open in Microsoft Paint (the original one)
  3. Select all
  4. Copy to clipboard
  5. Attempt to paste into Discourse Composer

Introducing Discette - a minimal ember-cli front end to Discourse

@etewiah wrote:

Now for another of my mad experiments wink This time I tried to answer the question of what the simplest ember front end to discourse would look like and this was my answer:

http://ed.klavado.com/home

Its been a great learning experience for me and I would recommend that anyone who really wants to understand Discourse well should have a go at creating a very simple front-end for it. Ember-cli is currently a joy to work with and after the frustration of waiting on the Rails asset pipeline each time I make a change in the main Discourse ember app I am pretty desperate to find a way to carry on hacking on Discourse without the asset pipeline.

I have kind of found a way. I came up with the concept of 'discettes', which are lightweight ember apps that consume the Discourse api. I am using a manual and rather cumbersome technique to host these discettes in my current Discourse site at the moment but I hope to come up with something smarter and more automated soon.

For now I am happy to offer anyone who comes up with their own ember-cli front-end the chance to host it on my site. Just send me a private message with details of your github repository and I will take care of the rest. To make it easier, I suggest you fork my 'discette-template' on github and take it from there. I've done a little screencast to explain myself better.

I hope this makes sense. Will be great to get some feedback so please let me know what you think.

Thanks

How to do "Object Oriented Discussion" through Oneboxes?

$

@riordan wrote:

This might be a terrible idea, entirely unimplementable, but wanted to run it by the community before trying it:

We're working on a project at The New York Public Library around turning historical documents into large-scale public data sets. Unfortunately a lot of these documents are confusing and require community support. We'd like to use Discourse as the talk/support platform for folks when they're talking about particular documents and building a custom Onebox for it seems like a great way to bring the content into the discussion.

But what about bringing those discussions back into the other site? Would there be a relatively simple way to have a "reverse onebox", so that if a link to one of those whitelisted assets is found in a post, the other server can be notified of what threads its in?

My initial TERRIBLE idea was giving each thread created from this other site a custom subcategory that corresponds to the ID in the other site, then when someone hits that asset in the other site, it asks for the feed from that custom subcategory. But that doesn't feel right, is a bad user experience, and has the potential to overwhelm the subcategory system.

Seems like this is ripe for a plugin, but since this is my first time developing for Discourse would appreciate any pointers.

What is "Born mobile, born to touch" supposed to tell me?

OK, I will freely admit that I'm often not the sharpest tool in the shed.

And maybe the title "Born mobile, born to touch" of the bullet point box (?) on www.discourse.org is immediately understood by everyone else. But I guess I like to have even the obvious explained at least to some extent. confused

And what is the implication of

Move back and forth freely between your laptop, your tablet, and your smartphone without constantly being told this site has an app, do you want it?

Are you just saying "We don't have any apps"? Is it that to understand this one really needs to open a Discourse group's site in whatever their mobile browser of choice is and ... then what?

Do I have to pull out my tablet & try it to get the full meaning? I mean I sorta get it. Maybe. But then again, I thought this was the place where I get told how it works and don't have to guess about it. disappointed

Maybe it's just me, but figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Generate trust level explanation posts on install

@Vocino wrote:

Similar to the posts generated for categories, assets, and other auto-generated posts, I think we should generate posts that explain the trust level system. These are linked from the badges listing but they link back to meta.discourse.org's post.

I've mirrored the post on my forum with a few edits specific to my forum (example here) and I'd love to see similar customizability or generalizing of the posts so they work outside of Discourse. The admin would also be able to edit them to suit their needs of course.

I've found that having this explanation on the forum has contributed quite a bit to empowering members by giving them an understanding of what's involve while still being vague as to the specific numbers for each tier. For example, I use phrases like "Can post many images" instead of "Can post 5 images".

Decided to upgrade via the /admin/upgrade and it showed that docker_manager needed upgrade.

Started the first upgrade and got a memory error so had to reboot the instance and upgrade via terminal instead.

Then discourse (e669fed) needed an upgrade, so did that and it froze with no progress bar activity for more than hour.

Rebooted instance and tried ./launcher rebuild app

Went back to /admin/upgrade and it is showing

No progress once again. Anything to look at to make this less painful on 1GB instance?

Not receiving notifications for edited Wiki posts

@Mohammad wrote:

This is something strange. I have made one topic a wiki post and kept it open. Then inside another browser I login with a different user id. I edited the wiki post and then I checked the forum on my admin ID. I did not received any notification whatsoever that could tel me that someone actually contributed to the post and edited it? Am I missing something here or some setting is required. Why are we not receiving notifications for wiki post edits?

Is the original author of wiki post the sole publisher?

Does wiki posts means, the community edits the post and the original author is the only one accepting the edits and publishing the post with new edits?

Customising notification email, No-reply, or something

@Benjol wrote:

Not having got a domain (yet), I unthinkingly put my own email address in notification email.

This morning in my inbox I discovered a reply from someone responding to a notification about a PM from another user!
The worse thing is that the "From" on the notification looks like this SenderName <myemailaddress>, so unless they were particularly vigliant, they would complete overlook it.

I'm aware that I can enable 'reply by email', but I'm not quite ready for that yet.

In the meantime, is there any kind of workaround? (Big nasty header at the top of each notification mail, or adding NOREPLY if reply by mail is not enabled?

Quote reply insertion at cursor position

I've noticed that quoted text is always inserted at the end of the message, but I it would probably make more sense (and help editing longer posts) to insert the material at cursor position.

Is this intended behaviour and if not, did you have any plans on changing it at some point?

Info for installation and integration - I'm a little lost

@LJasonH wrote:

Hello there.

First off I'm going about installing Discourse on my VPS alongside a VestaCP installation. Is this possible to run the Discourse Docker alongside apache/nginx and whatnot - and am I able to install discourse to a directory like /home/admin/web/mydomain.com/public_html/discourseforumdirectory as this is how VestaCP will place the domains/web directory.

Also will using this (https://github.com/discourse/wp-discourse) provide a forum alongside wordpress, or will I have to embed the actual forum while running the plugin as well?

Thanks for the help,
Jason.

Move Docker container to /var/discourse?

@zerstoerer wrote:

Hi,
I installed Discourse using DigitalOcean and the Docker image back in may, and it's since been living in /var/docker. Most of the current instructions and updates point to /var/discourse though – I was wondering whether the change might have weird effects on my installation and if there is a quick and easy way to move everything to the new directory.

I don't have a lot of experience with Docker and server commands in general, so a quick instruction would be appreciated.

Thanks!
