Runabove (OVH Experiment) vs Digital Ocean

@frederic wrote:

Hello,

Very happy to post my first message here. I just decided to move on Discourse after several (happy) years with phpbb.

Trying to find a cheap hosting, I tried 30 minutes install on Digital Ocean with no trouble (thanks !) I also tried the same tutorial on french hoster http://runabove.com with no trouble.

For a recommended 2 Go VM :

  • Digital Ocean : $20/month, 40 Go SSD, 2 core Processor
  • Runabove.com : $2,5/month blush , 20 Go SSD, 1 core Processor

First Runabove downsides : no SLA, no backup

But, I just realized that :
- Discourse is really easy to install
- Discourse has a bultin backup

So , I imagine Runabove is the perfect choice for hosting Discourse.

Does anybody feels the same ? Is there major downside that I cannot see at first sight ?

Thanks for all, happy to be here smile

Make the bookmark tool more accesible

Hi, after the deletion of all the stars, a lot of my users have started picking up the book mark tool. Only, they keep complaining to me that it's too far down, right at the bottom, wheras the star feature was right next to the heading, on and off, the topic. I was wondering if it were to be possible to have a second option to bookmark in the same place as the star feature was?, as this would make it a lot more accessible for my users!

Thanks

Do you consider making some tools to help discuz users migrate to discourse?

Hi Discourse team:
My forum is based on discuz, the biggest Chinese forum application, which has a great amount of users in China. I've heard that many discuz users would love to migrate to discourse, but there isn't a way to do so. discuz would not make such a migrating tool officially for sure, so do you consider making one? It'll definitely bring discourse big numbers of users!
Thanks for your awesome work, I love discourse smile

Anyone running education related forum for teachers care to share experience?

Hi,

I'm from a developing country in southeast asia,my spouse is an elementary school teachers.

The teachers here usually share their things such as teaching aid,educational related news on Facebook group which is really unorganized and full of advertisement spam.

I've spoke to her about it and she agrees on starting a forum to organize all those valuable information.

My question is I wonder how do I get teachers to contribute to our discourse platform.

Or perhaps a better question is what action should I tell her to take so that her colleagues of teachers participate in the forum.

The forum is less then 1 month old and have some visitors from Facebook but zero participants - probably it isn't convenient to them?

Chat Plugin features

I'm all for chat. How large of a project would this truly be? I recently threw a project on freelancer.com for a ground up build of chat which integrates into discourse database and has the same look/feel as it. Offers were in the $300-400 range.

I'll assume this would be more for a straight plugin, but no too ridiculously much. Is $500 a reasonable assumption?

At 63 votes, I bet you could get 100 individuals to throw in $5 a pop. There's your monies to get it done. All that would be needed is a little organization to get 100 people to throw into the pot. Push it on freelancer.com or similar site. Done.

Enabling Track External Right Clicks rewrites URLS , affecting SEO

@Mohammad wrote:

Hi, I don't know if it is a bug on my newly installed forum or it is actually an ignored bug. When I activate "track external right clicks" from admin settings so that a click count may display next to external links on the forum just like it does on meta.discourse.org external links. Instead of clean URLS, my URLs are rewrited with ugly structure that makes no sense and surely effects SEO.

The URLs gets the following rewrited syntax when inspected from source file:

<a href="/clicks/track?url=http%3A%2F%2FGoogle.com&amp;post_id=113&amp;topic_id=62">Google.com</a>

However I don't see such ugly URLs on meta.discourse.org. Is this a bug? How exactly can we enable the option to display click counts next to external URLs?

PullHotlinkedImages triggers a "Job exception: failed to allocate memory" error

@mochabcha wrote:

I'm getting ready to move images and attachments from my old Google Group into this forum. I'm not looking to go down that rabbit hole though...I have someone outsourced to do the transporting. However, I'd like to make it easy on her to just copy in the attachment links and Discourse will download the attachments, which I know it does. However when I put an image attachment in by pasting the link into the post...

4 jobs get scheduled in Sidekiq...

I deleted the first 3 and let the

Jobs::PullHotlinkedImages.delayed_perform

run, I don't want the emails being sent out, I just want to make sure it's pulling the hotlinked images. When Jobs::PullHotlinkedImages.delayed_perform runs I get a

NoMemoryError: failed to allocate memory

and a retry in Sidekiq along with a

Job exception: failed to allocate memory

in the error logs. I don't want to have to make her download every attachment, how do I overcome this?

Our forum is near by reaching first year of usage.
Some of our category / topic is used for daily work,
We have lot of topics which is irrelevant in perspective of holding for long time.
Is there any feature or plan to implement some kind of deleting or archiving old topics.
Is there way to BULK delete topics using some kind of SQL queries.
Cloud I do something like in XX category delete all topics (post) older then date 1.1.2015.

Why I'll love to delete posts is because I do not want to lose performances of my instance.
This is where we get in 10 months

Assumption is that 40% of this conversation is now irrelevant and longer required for holding.
If this going to speed up our discource why not delete old posts

Reading the ADMIN-QUICK-START-GUIDE.md since I really have no clue on how/where to upload my logo image, I tried to follow the "assets for the site design" link which unfortunately leads to 404.

My question:

What is the correct URL to the documentation on how/where to put my own assets?

Adding a menu item to the Hamburger menu

@DeanMarkTaylor wrote:

I needed to add a menu item to the hamburger hamburger menu in top right

I needed something that would be:

  • Accessible on desktop and mobile view
  • Opens in a new window / tab

This did the simple job for me.

What code do I need?

<script type='text/x-handlebars' data-template-name='/connectors/site-map-links/shop'>
    <li><a href="http://www.example.com/shop/" title="Some Amazing Club Shop" class="shop-link" target="_blank">Shop</a></li>
</script>

Where do I add it?

This goes in the CSS/HTML customisations in </head>

How does it work?

Simply put it uses Discourse's plugin-outlet functionality (code found here).

This appends our handle bars template with the rest of the site-map-links templates (if any) and outputs at the site-map-links plugin-outlet point:

Tested with

Discourse 1.2.0.beta5 - version 4c0129ccddb9037467133d37e5a93520a5f86f77
