Import Via Vanilla

@laktak wrote:

If you can't find an importer from your legacy forum to Discourse try Vanilla.

  • First use Vanilla Porter to export your old forum
  • Then import to Discourse with the vanilla.rb script

You don't have to install Vanilla for this, you just need to be able to run PHP.

Took me a while to find a way to convert from YAF to Discourse but it worked perfectly.

Vanilla supports:

PHP forums

  • Vanilla 1
  • phpBB 2-3
  • vBulletin 3-5
  • bbPress 1
  • SimplePress 1
  • Simple Machines 1-2
  • PunBB 1
  • IP.Board 3
  • XenForo
  • Joomla Kuena
  • Drupal Forum
  • MyBB
  • esoTalk
  • Expression Engine

ASP / .NET forums

Requires conversion to MySQL first. Try the dbdump tool.

  • Yet Another Forum
  • Toast
  • UserVoice
  • ASP Playground
  • Webwiz

Use category slug in menus instead of category name

@tobiaseigen wrote:

I don't know when category slug was introduced but I just discovered it today and I like it! smile

Would it be possible to change it so the category slug is used on menus, instead of the category name? This way we could have a longer name that is used on category lists and so on, while having a nice short name for menus.

Meanwhile and on a related note I noticed that the long names are truncated with ... to make it fit on one line, which is nice, but on mobile it is still juuust a little bit too long to display the new posts number next to it and have it still be on one line. Wraps to two lines which then looks ugly.

Auto-response when taking action on flags

@klow wrote:

Hi there -- I searched all over my admin settings and meta.discourse but couldn't seem to find the answer. Apologies if this topic has already been addressed.

Is there a way to disable an auto-response to the flagger when you take action (agree, disagree or defer) on a flagged post?
For example, I deferred a flag that was created by our system for flag_sockpuppets and it auto-replied with "Thanks for letting us know. We're looking into it."

I'd like to know if there is a way to disable this because this response gets sent out to all of the admins which isn't necessary and it's certainly not necessary to send our "system" a response.

thanks!

403 when embedding a Digital Ocean droplet

@takaminacchan wrote:

Been trying to solve this with a Digital Ocean technician for a couple days, but the situation seems too specific for his competence and I assume I'm not the only person who ran into this problem.

I'm trying to embed Discourse threads on some pages of my main site warranting discussion, which is Kirby CMS-based. Here's a discussion I had attempting to solve the problem on the Kirby support forum. Trouble is, I'm getting a 403 when the main site attempts to load the comments thread. I've already browsed through most of the obviously available resources, and haven't been able to solve the problem on my own, so I assume either the problem is just badly documented or my lack of competence with Docker are preventing me from advancing any further.

What I'm roughly sure about:

The issue is CORS-related. The main site is actually able to load part of the Discourse instance (the blue links at the bottom of the article are the custom header of my Discourse instance), but it can't load the threads proper.

Based on the error messages I'm getting, I assume the problem occurs at the nginx layer. enable-cors.org describes a method to get nginx to comply with CORS requests, but Discourse running in a Docker container means I can't just edit the configuration file of nginx within the container and expect the fix to last. Admittedly, I haven't tried (I'd like to go straight for the "hopefully lasting fix") because I don't know how exactly the configuration file is structured. In other words, I'm looking for an action I'd be able to apply to app.yml in order to properly configure nginx (assuming it's actually the problem) in the rebuilt container.

What I've looked at:

I've tried comparing my network logs with this page's on eviltrout's blog. It looks roughly the same, except for the 403 error occurring on my side.

I've included the CORS fix plugin's installation in my app.yml file.

https://meta.discourse.org/t/x-frame-options-sameorigin-header-prevents-embedding/14928/9

I've tried the generic "Access-Control-Allow-Origin: *" implementation in the app.yml file, and removed it because it didn't seem to change anything.

Sooo yeah, basically I'm stuck. Any leads?

I have two Discourse installations on different servers. One of them is showing me a white/blank page if MathJax is enabled. The other one doesn't. The only difference between both installations is, that the other one hasn't installed the latest 12 official commits. Have a look...

How can I fix this? Unfortunately, I really need LaTeX support on this page. It's essential.

Thanks in advance!!!!
Kind regards

Why don't discourse use email name to create username?

Continuing the discussion from Vietnamese slug support for better SEO:

I find it's strange to use "people name" from Facebook to create username in Discourse. Why wouldn't we use "email name" as a default user name for Discourse forum?

The facts are

  • almost everyone use their "nick name" or "email name" on forum. for example
    • @trandatnh is not my fullname
    • @thangngoc89 is not his name too
    • @riking I think your name is Kane York?
    • @codinghorror It's your nick name too right?
    • @sam is exceptional smiley
    • @... a lot of people use their nick name instead of their real name on the Internet.
  • We got problem with unicode "real name", my full legal name is: "Lê Trần Đạt". Facebook presents it as "Đạt Lê Trần". I don't like the way Facebook call me, but it's still ok, acceptable. But hey, what does Discourse call my name? There it is D_t_Le_Tr_n

I would prefer trandatnh as my username rather than D_t_Le_Tr_n

Don't tell me to use vi as default language. There are 2 reasons

  • I encourage my members, friends to use English.
  • The vietnamese translation is not completed yet (around 40%)

Now whenever saving a post I am running into following dialog:

Unknown error saving post, try again. Error: 422 Bad Request

Any idea how I can debug the reason of this error?

Possible to donate money to Discourse?

Being a .NET developer I hardly can contribute anything in code to Discourse.

Still I would love to contribute otherwise.

I came accross this thread which talks about funding certain features.

Beside that I found no discussion related to donating money for the core Discourse development.

My questions:

  • Is it allowed/accepted to give some money to the Discourse developement team?
  • If yes, in which way? (PayPal? Patreon? Kickstarter? ...?)

List of Invites is incomplete, can be (sometimes) encouraged to display by scrolling

@pacharanero wrote:

When I have sent a bunch of invites using the Bulk Invite from CSV function (which is great BTW), These invites do not always show up in the list of invites.

I just did a bulk invite of 51 users today, yet here is the list of invites, after a refresh:

Just one invite.

If I query the number of invites that the user digitalhealth_admin has sent, it is (correctly) 51.
digitalhealth_admin's user_id is 4

[14] pry(main)> Invite.where(invited_by_id: 4).count
=> 51

And if I drill down into each of the invites, the information is correct.

Mandrill confirms that the emails were indeed sent.

Interestingly, on some occasions, if I scroll up and down on the page a bit, a few more names will be added on (1 or 2 usually). If I continue doing this repeatedly, I can get the entire list to gradually appear. This suggests to me it is something to do with the rendering of the View.

I am using FF36 in Linux Mint 17 mainly but also tested it in Chrome Version 41.0.2272.76 (64-bit) and had the same problem.

Anybody any thoughts?
Marcus

Howto for changing lock icon for categories

@cpradio could you or someone else provide a simple howto for changing the lock icon for categories? It's now coming up in my community as something they find confusing because it is the same as the topic lock icon. I had some trouble finding the actual howto instructions in this thread.

Would be grateful!

Quoting vs. Direct Replying: What is proper etiquette?

$

@AdamCapriola wrote:

Something I've noticed happen with regularity on my Discourse install is that newer users tend to click the reply button for each individual post they want to respond to, rather than highlight and quote multiple posts at once. (The highlight + quote feature is less obvious.) The result is two or more posts in a row by the same user.

I originally considered this to be unmannered (posting multiple times in a row is typically frowned upon), but I starting thinking about it more and maybe it's not a bad thing? The user is at least trying to maintain direction in the conversation.

I'm interested in hearing people's thoughts on:

  1. Is this behavior acceptable? (posting multiple direct replies in a row)

  2. Is there a better way this scenario could be handled?
