Change "Private Message" to "Message Individual"

Sorry, the resent previous topic was closed before I could address it, but I think I have a valid change/point.

Currently, I think the "Private Message" verbage should change to "Message Individual", to remove some connotation that it is private.

The issue revolving this has been addressed many times before. I think the use case for this boils down to being able to effectively administrate, and moderate. There are other methods in which to carry on private communication, and although an additional step (and separate platform) in communication to make something private, or OTR (off the record) needs to be made, it should be the preferred method. At least in this scenario both parties are able to consent to the action of a Private/OTR conversation.

Admins can still read PM's by downloading the database

Continuing the discussion from Admins can clearly see all private messages of all users:

Since I apparently made a mistake by calling this a bug (sorry!) I'll make another attempt and try real hard not to get my topic insta-closed by categorizing this as a "feature", I guess? (There's no "security" category.)

So it turns out that the above concerns were already raised, discussed, and agreed as something to be done in this also-locked the discussion Impersonation and reading private messages:

Unfortunately ... the topic above drifted, and was locked after changes resulting in moderators no longer having access to private messages. Sadly it seems nothing was ever addressed regarding the auditing issue for admins (the original concern in the topic above).

I'm hopeful that other people (especially the gatekeepers) still strongly agree on this necessity, as much as they did last year before the topic was locked. But I don't understand how this issue can stay on the TODO radar if it keeps getting pushed down the stack by closing off conversation about it, and thus my attempt to (re-)raise it. smile

How's this for a unique bug!

I just discovered that the "__ granted" text at the bottom of a badge editing section doesn't update when you switch between custom (but not default) badges. The text does not update until you refresh the page.

Clicking @user in post preview goes to new page, loses composed message

  1. Go to a topic
  2. Reply to the first post.
  3. Type a message that @-mentions a user
  4. In the preview area, click the @user.

Instead of a pop-up being displayed, a new page request is made for the user's profile.

After clicking the browser's back button, the message that was being composed, may also be lost.

I've been bitten by this while composing a long reply summarizing a few topics. Wanted to click on one of the users I've @-mentioned to make sure they hadn't already addressed my reply with one of their posts.

I know there is a link preview feature in Discourse i.e. when you post a link to an article you get a nicely formatted preview box within the post. However they don't seem to be appearing on my site.

Am I doing something wrong? Or do they only appear for certain types of links?

Thanks

Editing a deleted topic is broken

$

@savef wrote:

Two things that are broken:

  • Editing a deleted topic gives you a modal which is blank.
  • The post on the page is updated with the edit changes, but these changes are not on the server.

Steps to replicate:

  • Create a new topic.
  • Delete that topic.
  • Edit the post.
  • Notice a blank modal appears when you hit save.
  • Undelete the post.
  • Notice the changes you made in your edit appear to be live.
  • Hit F5 to see that the edits you made were not saved.

Fixes:

  • The modal after editing your deleted post should say "your edits cannot be saved".
  • The post's content on your screen should not be updated.

Alternatively the forum could just allow changes to deleted topics and not show a modal.

I can replicate this on my own forum, I attempted to do it on sandbox too but I can't delete my topics there so I wasn't able.

Editing a deleted post doesn't give a modal, and does seem to update the real post.

Header moves when opening/closing Oneboxed Image

Basically the header moves some pixels to the right/left if you open an Oneboxed image. Size of the image does not seem to matter.

It probably happens because the Scroll Bar dissapears once you click on the Image / you are in the Onebox view or whatever that's called anguished

This is on Chrome 42.0.2311.60 beta-m (64-bit) but I can repro on Firefox Developer Edition 38.0a2 (2015-03-20) too. Probably Browser-independent.

@gerhard wrote:

I'm not sure if this is an actual bug (regression): When I go to the Latest tab and see topics with unread posts in it, I usually open them in a new browser tab.

The unread count on the Latest page doesn't change until I refresh the page. Is this my imagination or did those unread indicators disappear without refreshing the page up until recently?

Edit: Looks like I imagined this previous behaviour. Let's call it a feature request then. smile

Ad implementation for multi-site questions

@robbo wrote:

Okay so we have our own ad system for inserting our ads into certain positions at runtime on our static sites. We are bringing in the same system for discourse and all is fairly well, you can see some in http://comunidad.sudandola.com/.

Now these work fine for the most part however they are all done with template overrides from admin, we need this to be done with a plugin so we can have them in sync over all forums. So I need to know a couple things.

How to make a plugin which injects in pretty much the exact same way as in admin customize?

What events I can hook into to trigger new ads on new views or view changes?

All the information I have found on plugins seems to be dated or just hard to follow, are there any documents on it that are solid or even some clear code to read?

Our ad system is very simple, I just need to be able to call a single line of javascript and insert a single line of HTML to make the relevant position work.

These questions are fairly simply but finding the answers has been harder than expected. I did start a plugin but didn't know what hooks or classes to override to be able to put our own stuff into the HTML instead of the overrides.

How we do adsense with google dfp

$

@marktheis wrote:

Hi.

Over on https://discourse.osmc.tv I have had some problems getting the adsense plugin to work. It simply didn't work for us for some reason.
Instead I injected an ad in the DiscoveryView which is working quite well for us.

Adsense doesn't support refreshing ads with ajax but adsense together with google dfp does!

I found this neat little jQuery plugin that makes it a lot easier to use dfp.
https://github.com/coop182/jquery.dfp.js

Include the script in </body> in the dashboard and then add this after:

Discourse.DiscoveryView = Ember.View.extend({
  didInsertElement: function() {
    this.$(".list-container").prepend( "<div class='toplist_ad' data-adunit='ad_ID' data-size-mapping='toplist'></div>" );
    this.$(".toplist_ad").dfp({
      dfpID:'xxxxxx',
      sizeMapping: {
        'toplist': [
          {browser: [1100, 0], ad_sizes: [970, 90]},
          {browser: [810, 0], ad_sizes: [728, 90]},
          {browser: [530, 0], ad_sizes: [468, 60]},
          {browser: [0, 0], ad_sizes: [320, 50]}
        ]
      }
    });
  }
});

This will add a div and then add the ad into the div. It will show an ad on the list and category pages but not when on a topic. So the ad don't fresh when you go from latest to top, but it does when you go from a topic back to a list. sizeMapping is for showing different ads on different window sizes.

I have made a few apps in Ember.js but Discourse is still way out of my league smile . If anyone have a better/cleaner way to do this then feel free to add it here.

CSS clearfix for body?

@elberet wrote:

My customizations add a few boxes to Discourse's overall design; among other things, I've added a border and, to prevent the border from getting squished into the window border, a small margin to the bottom of the #main-outlet. Unfortunately, this conflicts with category backgrounds on the body element:

TL;DR, body could use the clearfix class. In the meantime, I'll copy the clearfix rules and apply them directly to body. smile

Add a unique body class for PMs?

@downey wrote:

So as it stands right now, each category's topic pages and indexes have a unique class with the category name. This allows us to do subtle background images/colors based on the category.

Would it be possible to add a similar body class for PM's generally? Having the ability to add some unique styling there would make it easily obvious to people they're dealing with PM's and not a regular public topic.
