Strategy of administrative messages and some translation stuff

@helmi wrote:

Hi,

i put this in the UX category as i think it fits best here: I've got two problems with the actual S3 deprecation warning message (aside from the fact that i'm sad about S3 beeing not supported anymore)

  1. Why is this message visible to the public? Isn't that an admin message that no other user should see? On my forum even guests can see it.

  2. What i see is "[de.s3_deprecation_warning]" - i'm using the german language file on my forums but i wonder why untranslated strings just don't fallback to english instead of showing the variable name.

Is there any special reason you're going for these directions? I think both could be solved better.

Ampersand (&) doesn't 'display' right if from linked post

This is really a small bother, just one of those perfection things I guess blush

So, if you make a post in some topic with ampersand (& char), like for example write: drag&drop; it will not display correctly if you use that post in some other topic as linked. It is displayed as html character, '&amp'

Discourse version: v1.3.0.beta4 +59
Viewing in latest Chrome 41.

p.s. I would show you the pictures for example, but restrictions doesn't allow.

Backup file not downloaded with .tar.gz extension

@frederic wrote:

Hello,

I'm testing the backup/restore process, and I found something annoying but non-blocking :

I have configure my discourse instance with the automatic daily backup on S3.

I made a fresh discourse install, created a new admin user, then go to Admin > Settings > Backups > "Allow Restore", so ready for Restore process.

Then I went to aws.amazon.com, downloaded the latest backup, and tried to upload it on my new instance.

Here is the blocking message :

There has been an error while uploading 'mydiscourseinstance-2015-04-02-030000.gz': The backup file should be a .tar.gz archive.

Indeed, the backup is a ".gz" archive.

So I downloaded Z-zip for Windows 7, and created a .tar then a .tar.gz archive, uploaded it on my new instance. Here the welcome message :

mydiscourseinstance-2015-04-02-030000.tar.gz' has successfully been uploaded.

then ... nothing scream

"No backup available." on the backup listing scream

How can I restore my instance ?

Thanks for your help !

Docker setup for App and Redis

In discourse_docker repo, there exist sample files standalone.yml - which includes Discourse, Postgres, Redis. And there is web_only.yml which contains Discourse but not Postgres and Redis.

How do I make a template so that Discourse and Redis are configured using docker container but an external PostgresQL database is used. In other words, I need a web+redis.yml. How do I go about writing it?

How to remove blocked IP addresses on user account deletion?

I'm testing out a Discourse server and when I deleted a test account a pop-up appears, requiring confirmation. In my haste, I clicked the BIG RED BUTTON, which also blocks the email and IP address.

After deleting this account (and associated email address), I'm unable to re-add the email address. How do you remove an email and IP address from the block list? Thanks!

Uploading image makes it black (not darker!)

I saw the bug in which the gravatars turn dark and this does not seem to be the same.
I want to upload an asset image to the asset thread. So as it says I click on reply then on upload
and I select the file I want to upload. When it's uploaded it looks totally pitch black.

In the above example, the first image with gray patterns is how it looks when I link it from the web and the black box under it is how it looks when I upload it from my machine.

if you want the file to try it, it's here http://www.ledonneindustries.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/footer_lodyas.png

'public user custom fields' setting usage?

@Benno wrote:

The 'public user custom fields' setting here: /admin/site_settings/category/users doesn't seem to accept any input (on my Discourse).
I have created two custom user fields, 'editable' and 'show on profile' are set and this seems to work okay.
I wonder what the intended use is of the 'public user custom fields' setting and in which case you can actually set something in this field.

Content of tables not visible

@Kuro wrote:

First: I have looked through the first few topics with "table" in the topic and apparently this behaviour has changed over time. If there is any topic this clashes with, feel free to tell me and close this.

Second: I am not really sure if this is bug or feature or neither. Any topic movement by somebody who knows is appareciated (for now it's feature).

Due to an import of the old forum (where tables were a thing apparently) we have some posts now that include a table-structure.
Now, I do understand Markdown doesn't support tables. And I understand Discourse doesn't really support tables as a result of that.
I would be fine with the table-tags removed (or better replaced with something sensible, though that sounds like work). But currently it also removes the content inside the table. This leads to empty looking posts.

Table below

Table above

Could this behaviour be changed?
As I said, just the raw data would be better than no data at all (even though a non formatted table is not all that useful, either)

PS. While removing the tags and the content, apparently the line-breaks are not removed. This can lead to a lot of empty space also featured in the demo-table above.

PPS. Check https://meta.discourse.org/raw/27117 to see the table

What sort of support do paid plans provide vs. one-time install?

@developvr wrote:

I'm referring to the Standard and Business plans. What do these paid plans offer in terms of support?

I'm asking because the one-time install mentions "self-support". Does the one-time install have the capability to update to the latest version of Discourse through the user interface (similar to how WordPress does it)? What am I missing out on by choosing the one-time install over the Standard plan (other than technical factors such as hosting speed and storage)? Am I left to manage patches and updates on my own? Would my one-time install Discourse instance be inferior to what I would get with the Standard plan?

Comment Baking Concern

@abarker wrote:

Experimenting on TDWTF has shown that insufficient sanitization is being performed on user posts. This allows users to disguise potentially malicious input as standard components of the Discourse UI. For example:

google.txt (17 KBytes)

@BingBot

The above look like a harmless attachment and mention, but they are really redirects to Google and Bing respectively. Such unsanitized input could be modified to point to potentially harmful sites, causing unwary users to be redirected without warning.

So far nothing more dangerous has been found, but this is still a vulnerability. I suggest the following:

  1. Any classes which are baked into elements by discourse - to indicate things such as mentions, attachments, etc - should not be permitted in user-generated raw.
  2. Sanitization should occur as the first step of baking a post.

Using the docker container ./launcher script how would I rebuild the web_only container before taking the old one offline?

@chamunks wrote:

The problem

I want to be able to rebuild/upgrade the web_only container without interrupting the live forum. Is it possible to do this without having to first destroy the web_only container as per how rebuild works.

./launcher rebuild: Rebuild a container (destroy old, bootstrap, start new)

What I would imagine would work.

I imagine what I would do is a series of the following commands rather than just running ./launcher rebuild which destroy's the old container thus preventing access to the site.

./launcher bootstrap web_only
./launcher stop web_only
./launcher start web_only

I can't imagine that I'm really doing this right.

My request/question

I would love if someone would make suggestion on how to do this correctly.
