What about a Desktop app, to replace Slack and the like?

So, I'm using Slack in two organizations, and I can't "like" anything, and finding data is a mess.

There's http://fluidapp.com/ which I could use to create a standalone discourse "app" for my mac. I can't help but wonder if anyone else would enjoy chatting with their teammates / co-workers using Discourse alone.

In any case, maybe one day someone will resell seats on a discourse instance to foster small, focused groups of chat, similar to what people get from Slack or Hipchat. Maybe that'll be me...

Hi there,
I have problems with my Discourse install and wanted to make a fresh start again: completely remove Discourse and Docker from my system, install both again and then import the backups.
If I download a backup from the admin panel and restore it, will the whole app be like it was before or do I have to backup other important files / download anything?
Thanks for the help!

TIL: Discourse can embed imgur albums and galleries

Continuing the discussion from Oneboxing: Albums from imgur get a cute kitten as onebox

We just found this feature by accident on our forum today. Here's an embedded imgur gallery, simply by entering the link http://imgur.com/a/PWgY0?gallery

So nifty! I dunno if the Discourse devs did something specifically for imgur recently or if it's just a result of imgur's new and improved embeds initiative (are they more OpenGraph compatible now?).

In any case, yay for developers!

Start the discussion link issue

I have my discourse configured to go to, for example, "http://test.example.com", my wordpress site is on dev.example.com. After I make a post ("A Fun Test") I get a "Start the discussion at test.example.com" but the link is going to http://dev.example.com/a-fun-test/ when it should go to http://test.example.com/t/a-fun-test/33

My wp-discourse is on this master branch for my test server and production server; and for some reason I cannot duplicate the problem on my production server and production discourse. So this is working in one situation but not the other.

I also have a version of my website running in a virtual machine, and it to seems to be able to post to my test discourse.

Small UI bug with user cards in Firefox on Linux

I'm using Firefox 37 on Linux and there's a small visual bug when you click on an avatar to open a user card. Here's a screenshot:

It's the blue stick-shape about 2/3rds of the way across the user bar, at the top. It looks like a link or a button is being focused onclick, clicking on the user bar makes the focus go away. This doesn't appear on Fx on Win7 (I don't know about OSX or any mobile OS's).

If SSO login fails can I redirect to any 'safe' page on Discourse?

@benito_m wrote:

Some background: I'm using ActiveDirectory to authenticate users in my SSO implementation. This all works fine but if a user tries and fails to authenticate I'd like to redirect them to some page on the forums that doesn't let them see anything.

This is vital in my case: since I have login required set to true then currently redirecting them back to any page on Discourse causes them to be sent to /session/sso again (and the loop repeats ad infinitum).

Are there any solutions that don't involve me having to host my own page (I don't want to show the URL of my SSO implementation in the unauthenticated user's browser if I can possibly help it)? I suppose I'm looking for a 'safe' page on Discourse that non-authenticated users can see.

Formatting the Email Digest

@Buzzwig wrote:

Is it possible to control the format (and selected content) of the email digest?

We have a customer who wants to brand the digest to match their main site, and if possible have some level of control over which topics are selected for inclusion (filters).

I can't see any way to control this through the site itself (in the style of header/footer customization of the site) so I am presuming there is a template somewhere in the codebase?

Thanks in advance.

Maintaining huge translated strings in Transifex

@blau wrote:

I'm translating and maintaining the Italian D. localization on Transifex, together with others (hi @vulkanino!).

Discourse localization .yml files contain some huge strings that are hard to maintain once they have been translated.

Transifex makes it easy to maintain short strings when the original english version has been modified, as the translated string is invalidated and shifted to the Suggestions section in the Transifex UI, where it can be copied and adapted to form the updated translation.

When a huge string is modified, such as the usage_tips welcome message, the Transifex UI is not well suited to examine the diff in the english original and tracking the changes to make in the translation.

The translator has to examine the source elsewhere (e.g. github.com), guess which revision introduced the changes, compare the old translation and put that back in Transifex. This process takes time and requires certain skills.
I understand the need to apply small changes and wording nuances in english, but as an occasional translator it's frustrating to go over it time and again.

What could be done:

  • in Transifex, pin a revision number (from the D. repository) to the translation, to make it easy going back to track the changes in the original. That would be a Transifex feature of course; and/or
  • in Discourse, split the megastrings in smaller chunks.

phpbb3.rb and general (Linux / Docker / Ruby / GEMs) help

$

@Benno wrote:

I'm a Windows guy with little Linux knowledge blush

I installed Ubuntu server 14.04 on VMware and installed the Discourse docker as per instructions, including the email setup. I created an admin account and I can login to my Discourse install.

I have a separate (Windows) server with a copy of a phpBB database (only the database, no phpBB install) on MySQL. I don't need the existing attachment or avatar pictures for now.

I was able to go 'into' the Docker and find the pre-installed phpbb3.rb script but I don't know how to edit it or overwrite it with an edited script from my Windows machine into the Docker (with Putty/SSH). Nano (as per the install instructions) is not available in the Docker.

I tried to run the pbpbb3.rb script with the default values (just to see if I could run it) but it says the required "mysql2" GEM cannot be found. I found a command (gem install mysql2) to install the mysql2 GEM but that also failed:
ERROR: Error installing mysql2:
ERROR: Failed to build gem native extension.

I have no idea what I am doing really flushed and would really appreciate some beginner instructions for the problems above.

DigitalOcean deployment wizard

Has anyone else tried out the DigitalOcean deployment wizard for Kaiwa? Seems that something like this could simplify the process for getting Discourse up and running for folks.

  1. Click button on Discourse.org
  2. Sign in/up to DigitalOcean
  3. Complete web form with all the necessary initial settings & click Create

That's it ... shortly thereafter you have a web app up and running. All the code they used to do it is in their GitHub repo.

Yes I know, it's been churned until it's butter though I cannot locate a definitive answer. So forgive the post if it is located somewhere, I've dredged through a lot over the last several months here.

"Sorry, an error has occurred" when trying to add a custom email to category

@cawas wrote:

When trying to set a Custom incoming email address to a category, I've got this error:

Sorry, an error has occurred.

I could then easily see on the log why that happens. I suppose we can only use one incoming email per category:

ActiveRecord::RecordNotUnique (PG::UniqueViolation: ERROR: duplicate key value violates unique constraint "index_categories_on_email_in"
DETAIL: Key (email_in)=(help@cregox.com) already exists.
: UPDATE "categories" SET "email_in" = $1, "updated_at" = $2 WHERE "categories"."id" = 15)

I just thought I would report this as I believe the first error message could probably be easily improved. Specially nice if it could say which category already had the email! blush

Hi, currently I am using SSO to create users on Discourse through my Rails site, which works well. However I also need to create different categories that will be accessible by different groups, based on these users. Is there a script or any automated method to create groups, without having to hack the database?

Thanks!

Hello,

I noticed that other communities such as
http://meta.telesc.pe/
Are offering an option where a user can subscribe to email updates (newsletter) by entering his email.

This way the user can just enter his email (without the need to sign up for a regular account) and get updates of interesting topics by email.

Is something like this possible with discourse?

Thank you!!
