Is there any way to include excerpts of blogs as topics instead of full posts?

@Aspirety wrote:

Sorry, not sure how to word this better. But on our website we have it set up so blog posts are posting topics to the forum, which embed the replies as comments on the blog. As it is now, the forum post contains an entire copy of the blog. But what we've found is that it's distracting viewers from reading the original articles, which is a problem because the forum posts don't always format as intended, and we want to divert traffic to the main blog.

So, my question is, is there any way to include a brief excerpt of the blog as the opening post of the topic, instead of the full blog post? Let me know if it's possible! Thanks.

Allow “Name" field to be disabled in registration dialog

@evilal wrote:

Continuing the discussion from Can't remove Real Name if Admin disables them:

(Apologies if this belongs in UX)

Feature request: Allow the Name field to be disabled on the signup dialog as a settings option.

As per the linked thread, this is to allow more anonymous use, for example when full names are already being hidden throughout the forum.

An alternative way may be, when the "enable names” setting is turned off, do not show the Name field in the signup dialog. (this avoids adding an extra setting).

Hopefully that makes sense...

This is kind of the opposite to Making the name field required or removing it?

Using back still shows unread indicator on the topic

Okay, this has happened to me multiple times now here on Meta.

I typically use latest, open an unread item by clicking on it, and then press u to return to the topic list. Upon doing so, the topic I just opened and read still has an unread counter next to it.

When I visit a second unread topic and use u to go back, that topic also has an unread counter and the prior topic's unread counter is now grey.

It isn't until I do a hard refresh that the unread counters completely disappear.

How to replace the rails_multisite gem with my own gem

@msmyers wrote:

I would like to replace the rails_multisite gem that comes with Discourse with my own rails_multisite_bestest (Still working on that name). The existing one appears to be in the source folder under vendor/gems/rails_multisite

Strategy 1:
Make my own Gem and add a line to Gemfile that reads gem 'rails_multisite_bestest'
Pros:
- Bundles well.
Cons:
- Would seem to conflict with the existing built-in multisite gem.
- Seems like I need to have my Gem be aware of removing the other Gem via railtie.rb and 'remove' it. Bleh.

Strategy 2:
- Remove the rails_multisite folder and replace it with the rails_multisite_bestest folder.
Pros: Easy to work on while I have vagrant up in my business.
Cons: Now I have to modify the Discourse source and keep it updated on every pull.

Strategy 3
- Edit the rails_multisite code directly. Bleh. See above.

What do you recommend?

Question on AUFS and OverlayFS

@webb wrote:

Background: I'm relatively new to Docker, but have extensive *nix experience. In my personal life I've run mostly Ubuntu, but lately I've been trying to run Fedora or CentOS as we're 100% RHEL at work and I'm tired of typing "apt-get" when I should be typing "yum". smile

So trying to get Discourse running on Fedora per the Install guide has been... enlightening. Every thread I read, all of my googling, pointed to AUFS as being the only workable solution. Not a huge deal, I've been recompiling kernels for twenty years. But since it seems AUFS is never going to be merged, it's certainly not ideal.

I guess my question is, is there a strong reason to use AUFS over OverlayFS? Overlay has been merged since 3.18 (and backported to RHEL7), Docker supports it now (on EXT4). Sure, SELinux has issues, but those are going to be solved eventually. And now I'm not limited to Ubuntu for an out-of-the-box Discourse install, which is fantastic because I've been wanting to use it at work.

I have Discourse bootstrapped on Fedora without error and everything appears to be running great... but are there known issues that could bite me down the road?

Thanks!

Disappearing Category Tags

My forum frequently has one ore more topics where the category disappears from sight. Its not visible on the full list view, and also its not available when you click directly on the and look a the topic view. It does, however, become visible when you click on the edit title/category button.

Its not predictable but it happens almost every day on our site. And users have noticed it and reported it.

Is this a known bug in the current release? If you need a screen shot let me know.

Just also noticed that it messes up the shading of that topic too - see what happens below. In this case - I went in and changed the original category to a different category - then the category tag started showing up again, but the shading is gone (didn't notice if this was the case prior to changing the category).

Using discourse to replace buddypress groups and mailman (and phpBB)

@gingerling wrote:

Hi, phplist.org is launching next week, and we are using discourse to condense many other apps into one. So far we have wordpress (with buddypress extended profiles) SSO using the official plugin (https://github.com/discourse/wp-discourse)

I am trying to get my head around how we will use Discourse to replace budypress groups and mailman.

Where we came from

We used to have community.phplist.com (still active for another week). When a user signed up they would tick a group, either users, documenters, translators, developers (or several groups) - they would then be able to chat with other people in the group. Additionally, we have 4 mailman lists, one for each group. All our blogs and newsletters are categorised into the same four groups.

Obviously this was over complex, especially as we had a phpBB forum as well.

Where we are hoping to go

I am hoping that we will have something like:

  • user signs up
  • ticks group, eg "developers"
  • then they are "joined" to, or told how to use, a discourse category, so the "developers" category - this replaces the buddypress group chat
  • They can then use that category either in the discourse or by email - this replaces themailman

And so we have a combining of mailman and buddypress groups into one place: super!

But I don't quite see how

I am struggling to understand how discourse deals with "groups" of people, both technically and also in terms of the intended use/design/idea.

I can see there is a groups feature in my admin, but I am not sure if that will help, and I know there is the email-in feature https://meta.discourse.org/t/replacing-mailing-lists-email-in/13099 but I cant seem to figure out what this might look like when it's all put together.

Set up "Email In" (start topic via email)

0

@pacharanero wrote:

Continuing the discussion from Start a new topic via email:

Introduction

Discourse is intended to be a web-based forum. Its integration with email is good, but not meant to replace its web interface. Nevertheless, when migrating to Discourse a community which is accustomed to another, more email-based, form of communication such as a Listserver, Google Group or similar, as an admin you may be asked to arrange things so users can start a Topic from email. I have recently had to set this up, and while the information IS available in Discourse Meta already (see this thread), it's wasn't in a clear step by step format, and I initially had some problems with getting Start Topic Via Email to work with multiple different Categories.

NB: If you just need users to be able to Reply to a Topic from email, this isn't the Topic you need. Go to this topic first.

It's important that you have set up Reply From Email functionality first, since this Howto will assume that you have all the Reply From Email functionality set up and working. Go to this topic first and ensure that replies from email is set up and working.

HOWTO

  1. I'll say it again; Please ensure Reply Via Email is working in your Discourse forum FIRST. Here is the HOWTO for that: https://meta.discourse.org/t/set-up-reply-via-email-support/14003

  2. For the example I will set up Start Topic Via Email for a Discourse forum which monitors the POP3 account discoursereply@example.com for its Reply From Email function. The same POP3 account is used for Start Topic From Email.

  3. Decide which Categories you want to set up Start Topic From Email for. If there is only one Category then go ahead and jump to step X. If there is more than one Category, you will need to create an email forwarder for each of these Categories. For example, our fictional forum has these categories:

    • Staff
    • Watercooler
    • CIOs
  4. So we need email addresses called something like:

    • staffnewtopic@example.com
    • watercoolernewtopic@example.com
    • ciosnewtopic@example.com
  5. All of these email addresses should redirect to the email address monitored by Discourse: discoursereply@example.com. Usually you can set up forwarders like this for free on your Domain Registrar's control panel. If you can't, change your registrar wink

  6. Now we configure each category. For each category, edit the Category settings. When you're looking at the category, the Edit button is at the top right:

  7. In the Category Settings, go to the Settings tab, and enter the relevant email address in the box. This will be one of the 'forwarder' email addresses. I would also recommend ensuring that the box 'Accept emails from anonymous users with no accounts' is unchecked otherwise anyone with the email address, including spambots, can post. Do this for each of the Categories that will be accepting incoming New Topics From Email, using the relevant forwarder email address for each Category.

The way this works is that Discourse only has to poll one email account (discoursereply@example.com), which is I guess much more efficient, but it can still assign new Topics to the right Category because the forwarder address (in this example staffnewtopic@example.com) persists somewhere in the forwarded email data, enabling Discourse to match correctly.

This is the bit that wasn't clear to me when I was setting up this arrangement, hence why I thought a more formal HOWTO would be of benefit, hopefully, to someone.

@riking as per your offer would you wikify and place in HOWTO? Feel free to edit for style, content etc.

Feedback from a community about Mailing List feature

0
0

@ashledombos wrote:

Hello,

my team and I have tested intensively discourse as a possible replacement to mailing lists and forums, and I would like to congratulate, discourse is really an impressive environment.

I’d like to say first that if myself I prefer using now discourse than the mailing lists, for day to day development, projects etc, it was not the case with almost previous forums that existed.
There are so many impressive features, this is awesome. I also like the headers added by discourse: List-Unsubscribe:, List-ID:, List-Archive:, Return-Path:

Here I take in account the view of people who are used to ML only, and played nicely the game of using discourse in real conditionss, that’s to say by replacing their mailing list by discourse temporarily, not just testing the features, sending “hello” and “test message”, but for their day to day work, and bring me feedback.
So they registered, checked the option “send me an email for every new post” and get back to work with the use of this new ML replacement. Globally, after two weeks, their opinion about the product is very high.
It gave them around 85% of the comfort of a traditional mailing list (mailman, sympa…). However there are still things that appears as a problems for our users, some uncomfortable, other blocking. I’m not taking in account the standard notifications which, for users who tested it, are already perfect.

I have made a quick list of issues reported, with some ideas, about which I have no idea if it’s doable or not, or if the idea already has been discussed.
So all the ideas below are for “full mailing list” feature, but it may also fit for standard notifications.

Problem 1 : in mailing list mode, unless there is a quote (only if message comes from forum), you don’t see which message replies to which. (Importance: Medium)

Imagine this very simple kind of conversation

  • John: Hello, there is a party tomorrow at bob’s home
  • Bob: Do you have a car for coming?
  • Alice: I’m ready for tomorrow smile Do you like my new haircut?

Then John replies to Bob’s post 2 “No”
In discourse, you can seethat the reply is to Bob.
In mailbox, you don’t have any way to see the reply is to Bob, so it appears like this:

  • John: Hello, there is a party tomorrow at bob’s home
  • Bob: Do you have a car for coming?
  • Alice: I’m ready for tomorrow smile Do you like my new haircut?
  • John: No

Solution idea: For mailing lists clients with threading management, the best solution would be to keep threading. This mainly deals with little change in in_reply_to: and references headers.

How it is now (example: a user reply to post 12 of topic 40, you receive the message in your mail box)
message distributed gets

in_reply_to: <topic/40>

which is not related to any previous message.

Ideally, it should be

in_reply_to: <topic/40/12>

which corresponds to a previous message you have in your mailbox.

Also, references header should keep the thread structure…
In this example, the same user replies to post 12, which is a reply to post 6, which is a reply to post 2, which is a reply to post 1.
Here are the headers you should get:

in_reply_to: <topic/40/12>
references: <topic/40/1> <topic/40/2> <topic/40/6> <topic/40/12>

Solution idea 2: For non threaded display, or conversation style, maybe add in the email two line like this:

Reply to @robert post #6

List of problems 2: (a list because it was hard to separate them)

Several problems has been reported about the reply_to: and reply+{messagekey}@ system.
messagekey:

  • when you are the first poster, you can’t reply to your initiated thread by email until you receive a reply key in your echo (which takes 10min by default) or someone else reply (importance: high)
  • when you are the last poster, in conversation mode view (used in several webmail services), and reply to the conversation (with reply to all button) the message key is the same as in your previous message. So discourse is confused about to whom exactly you replied. (importance: low)
  • Most email accounts add a new contact each time you send a message to a new email address. This adds a lot of new contacts as each message key is different. (Importance: low)
  • We have found 6 mobile email clients, on several platforms, that doesn’t reply to the reply_to: header as intended.. Here is one example I reported with email client of Firefox OS. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1152683 . Standard mailing lists still work with these email clients anyway because of the general use of reply to all by default (that includes to previous To: Header), the mailing-list engine being able to filter out duplicate messages to list members (Importance: high)

Solution proposal (I insist on the fact I don’t know if it’s doable, but just what appears as an ideal behavior):
Instead of using a messagekey in the recipient, discourse should get message in a generic mailbox for the whole site, or even better, for the category (which should also be in a list-post: header) and analyze the reply_to: header to determine to which message it is a reply.

Problem 3: Discourse breaks the threading with your own sent messages (Importance: Medium)

When you post a message by email to discourse, its message-ID should be kept in database and included in the in_reply_to: and references: headers of the notifications distributed by discourse.

How it is now:
Bob sends a message through discourse with

Message-ID: <bob1@bb>

2) Alice replies from discourse or by email

3) Bob receives the message from Alice distributed by discourse, with:

in_reply_to: <topic/7@dc>

instead of

in_reply_to <bob1@bb>

How it should ideally be

  1. Bob sends a message by email through discourse with

    message-ID:

    1. discourse keep the message-ID: of Bob’s message for the next notifications.

  2. when someone directly replies to his message, by email or via discourse direclty, discourse distribute the notification with

in_reply_to: <bob1@bb>
references: <topic40/1> <alice4@al> <topic40/3>.....<bob1@bb>

(I have mixed replies by email and replies through Discourse for illustration)

Note: even for someone who receives messages only when he’s not active on the site, the references: suite will help the email client reorganize the thread.

Problem 4: No inline reply style possible. (importance: high)
While this is imho not a problem for standard notifications but many people who use traditional mailing lists regularly use inline reply style.

Maybe a start of solution: I’m sure that parsing correctly an email is difficult, especially in html. it’s why I thought that it could be interesting to force email sent for people in mailing list mode to receive them in pure txt format. It would force people to send nice markdown formatted emails that may be easier to manage for Discourse. In the case of Discourse detecting inline reply, it could import full quote of previous message.

Additional features suggested by some members:

  • It would be interesting to have also List-Post:, List-Help:, List-Subscribe: and Errors-to: headers.
  • Registered users should get a notification when they do something wrong (like not enough letters in message, crossposting etc)

PS: excuse my English, not my natural language but I do my best.

Good day/evening/night to all smile

But no matter what I try, discourse won't send me notifications for new posts. I have selected that option in my profile, and I even have watched some categories to test, but nothing helps. The email tab in the settings also shows no errors, but also no attempt to send any notification mail.

Is there some setting I am missing, or is this a problem with invite-only forums?

I really need to run this discourse as a mailing list, but it must also be invite-only.

I opened a new, clean, browser and tried to login but the login and signup buttons don't work. Back to my admin login, I tried to remove and/or disable the custom code, but it would not save - the save button did respond, but it gets frozen in a state of "Saving..." I logged in via ssh and did a rebuild, but am experiencing the same bugs.

I'm using 1.3.0.beta5 latest-release +83
