Develop Directory of Users by Category?

@ChristopherMcEwan wrote:

The user directory reports user activity across the entire forum. I would like to be able to see user activity by category.

eviltrout advises that: "This has been asked for but hasn't been prioritized for development yet." https://meta.discourse.org/t/user-directory-feedback/26550/84

I am a non-coder so am not in a position to develop the function myself. Is there anyone out there who has capability/interest to develop? I could be prepared to pay or at least contribute to the cost of development of this feature. Any thoughts on what costs might be incurred?

Post Topic in Two Categories?

@ChristopherMcEwan wrote:

Am I correct that a topic can only be assigned to a single category? At times it could be helpful to be able to assign a single topic to multiple categories. For example in a gardening forum a discussion could be relevant to both a plant type category (eg. conifers) and a location type (coastal gardens). Ideally the discussion topic should be present and refresh in both categories.

Are there any workarounds that address this situation? I have considered tagging the topic with the 'other' category but this could get confusing and doesn't provide the same search functionality (as i understand it)

Any prospects of this feature in the nearish future?

Need advice in making a new rails app with discourse as one of the two components

@helloravi wrote:

The application I plan to build has two components

1)Discourse forum
2)an exam conducting piece of software with a question bank.

Both of them will be on the same domain. Both of them would be sharing the same login system.

My first thought is to clone discourse and develop the rest of the application inside discourse. I need advice on this.
a)Do I need to keep them as separate rails applications? Can I make single large rails application? What should be my considerations if I can do it both ways?
b)I have a little experience in developing a few rails projects already. I only deployed 5 projects on Heroku so far. How would you recommend me hosting this? I know that discourse supports only docker installations.

I spent a couple of hours to install discourse locally on my Ubuntu system.

Discourse not showing up at specified hostname

@PopsRocker wrote:

Hello,

I just ran through the installation steps and all appears to be fine in the server terminal. However when I go to the URL I added for the DISCOURSE_HOSTNAME I am getting the default splash page when I set up a new website.

I'm running a dedicated server using the ServerPilot control panel to install and manage my websites. From what I understand of ServerPilot, they configured my server with Nginx as a reverse proxy in front of Apache.

I have multiple sites running on this server at the moment, and setup a sub-domain to install a test instance of Discourse. The sub-domain is at dev.100foldpro.com.

I would guess that I need to setup a multisite installation but so far the information I have found is confusing with a lack of details.

Can someone point me to a recent guide on setting up Discourse.

I'm assuming there's something that will need to be configured regarding Nginx, but the way ServerPilot sets it up doesn't seem to match with anything I have been able to find. I will admit this would be easier if I "really" understood how Nginx works vs Apache and what it means to have Nginx running as a reverse proxy in front of Apache.

Thank you in advance

Show relevant setting-categories in admin settings search

@erlend_sh wrote:

A funny side effect of Discourse's great admin search is that I hardly know where any setting actually resides. I can tell you there's an max invites per day setting in Discourse, but I couldn't tell you where to find it. "Just search for invites silly!"

In an attempt to educate myself and others as well as to create a better sense of place in the interface, I'm suggesting this addition to the search:

I've simply included the relevant categories underneath the all-in-one-bundle "All" that we're all used to. (the categories and numbers in the mockup were picked at random).

  • If you clicked on any of the categories below, it'd only show the settings matching your search term. In other words, the search filter persists through category drill-down.
  • If you clear the search while in a specific category, you will remain in that category but you'll now see all options.

Is it currently possible to change the color of the 'staff color' function?

Would it be an idea to make it easily customizable through:

Why coffescript?

@bobzhang wrote:

I am a ten years Emacs user, these days I plan to give atom a try, however, coffescript hold me back.

I am familiar with javascript, heard of coffescript, but I don't want to learn another language(since there are no
new ideas in coffescript, just some syntatic sugar). It's not worth learning a new syntax just for an editor.

(Note.. I don't like javascript, but I still prefer javascript to coffescript, my daily programming language is OCaml)
This is just my feedback, thanks.

Wp-discuss integration error

@Raphael_Dias wrote:

Hi everyone,

I have a WP membership site and I would like to integrate it with an existing discourse forum.

I tried to do that through the PrimeTime WP plugin but something went wrong when setting up the sso part in the discourse admin.

Now i cannot log in into discourse to disable the sso authentication.

How can I fix that? How can I disable the sso integration so that I can use the forum again?

Usability clanger in one-time token

@oliver_moran wrote:

One of our users was confused by the following message in the sign-up process:

To log in again, click the following link to choose a password: [URL to one time token]

What happened was that the next time they tried to use the site, they clicked on this link expecting it to allow them to "log in again" (or to "choose a new password"). However, the site said:

Sorry, your token has expired. Please try resetting your password again.

They didn't know how to proceed.

URLs do not get Onebox-ed on conversion/import

0

@Benno wrote:

Continuing the discussion from phpBB conversion and general (Linux / Docker / Ruby / GEMs) help:

On my current phpBB forum I use custom BBCode to post YouTube, SoundCloud, Facebook and Twitter links 'inline', similar to Onebox on Discourse.
I'm using a slightly customized version of the phpbb3.rb phpBB import script where I strip the custom BBCode tags to keep the bare URLs.
After the import the URLs are shown as clickable links in the converted posts (without any Markdown or BBCode) but they are not converted into Onebox format as I had hoped.
I tried the Rebuild HTML option on some posts and even did a complete rebake of the whole database but that does not show the URLs as Onebox.
Only if I manually edit the posts (without making any changes) the links will be converted to Onebox.

At what point should the Onebox conversion take place? Only on post creation or post edit in the user edit window?

(all the required domain names like youtube.com etc where enabled in Discourse before running the import script)

@probus wrote:

Count for how many more replies there are in the topic is off by one in embedded comments.

Say the comment topic has the opening post + 7 comments and you configure embed to show only 5 comments. It will tell the users (correctly) that there are 7 replies, show five of them (correctly) and then tell there are 3 more replies in the forum (incorrect).
