What are you guys doing for hosting and storage sans S3 support now?

@Vocino wrote:

So without S3 support, DigitalOcean is very expensive to use. It's basically unusable for a popular forum that accepts uploads. Finding a host that is fast enough to run Discourse but also has cheap scalable disk space has proven difficult. I don't know of any modern site or app that doesn't store user-uploaded image assets on a CDN so I don't think there's much of a market for high disk space web servers.

Are most people just disabling uploading and requiring their users go off-site and link external image urls?

Customize subject format for digest emails

@tobiaseigen wrote:

We have Customize subject format for standard emails but this does not have anything to do with digest emails.

I don't know about others, but I am finding that the digest email format is too rigid and makes for boring, too long subject lines. I want to have a very informative, long site title for the purposes of the welcome email and page titles, but then that makes for a cumbersome and long subject line for digest emails.

I also agree it would be very nice to be able to feature a top post title in the digest subject. This is especially valuable for small, not so buzzing communities when there's often only one post in the digest (and it would help if it were possible to reply to it if that's the case).

"Create Topic" and "cancel" buttons loading inconsistenly

@emily2 wrote:

We have a number of users reporting that they are not seeing the "create topic" or "cancel" buttons below the text box when they try to create a topic. I initially assumed it was user error (browser scooted down on the dashboard), but after digging into it a bit I have found that sometimes refreshing the page causes the buttons to appear, so it seems they are loading inconsistently.

Has anyone else seen this? Is there a fix?

What are these "/topics/timings" ongoing XHRs?

When browsing topics, I see regular XHRs to /poll and /timings - what is the later for? Should CDNs care? I don't see an equivalent setting long polling base url for timings.

Is it safe to flush redis?

@MrSteve wrote:

Hi, I'm experiencing the problem described here -- high RAM use on redis:

I see that this bug was fixed, so I'll update my discourse installation shortly. Before doing so, I was considering flushing redis to clear up space (I'm almost at the limit). But I don't know exactly what discourse uses redis for. Is it safe to just flush it? Will my users see any disruption if I do so?

Thanks!

Identify and highlight post with the most likes in a given topic

@OnceWas wrote:

I would like be able to uniquely style the post that has received the most likes in any given topic. From what I have read so far on meta, it looks like this would be best addressed - for now, at least - by a plugin that would add a CSS class to the most liked post.

I have looked through the Discourse source code, and I have looked at other plugins, but I can't find anything that would help me to get started on this.

I'm not a Ruby person, but I know may way around jQuery and database queries. The logic would look something like this mash-up:

var post_id = (SELECT id FROM posts WHERE topic_id = current_topic_id ORDER BY like_count DESC LIMIT 1);
var post_class = "#post-cloak-" + post_id;
$(post_class).addClass('most-liked');

This would then allow CSS theming to target the most liked post.

I am more than willing to tackle this, but I would need some pointers as to where to start looking at how to hook into the listing of the posts in a topic.

Does anything special have to be done for the Yahoo login? I only see a checkbox:

When I check it and try it out, I get a popup window with the following error:

It's trying to access my site at "/auth/yahoo".

Google Forms Discourse implementation

0

@terraboss wrote:

Hey,
what are guys thinking about some kind of Google Forms implementation? This is a very powerful feature to collect data from the community, e.g. for registrations, more personalised polls, etc.

Sometimes, when the questions become more complex and I've been planing events, workshops, etc., I've to use Google Forms or Doodle lists.

Wouldn't it be great, if the community of the 21st century could handle individual forms too? Maybe as plugin, maybe as full feature. Should we really set-up a complex survey with complex tools like LimeSurvery to get quick responses? Or do we have to use 3rd party platforms, which make money with sensible user data and even more?

What are the others thinking about this?

Other thoughts appreciated.

Moving posts from one topic to another should bump threads last activity date

@DeanMarkTaylor wrote:

I just noted moving whilst moving recent posts from a new topic (A) to an older topic (B) didn't bump the old topic (B) up the latest list.

Topic A

  • Created 2 hours ago
  • Contains several posts created <10 minutes ago.
  • Most recent post before posted needing to be moved posts was 1 hours ago.

Topic B

  • Created 8 months ago
  • Most recent post before moved posts where added was 6 hours ago.

After the new posts were moved to the old topic, this is the positions - where B should be above A

Thanks!

It only happens on non 'Normal User' Accounts. aka, Admin Accounts, Mod accounts and new accounts.

Though it should show there profile, there badges and allow me to change other settings.

Any suggestions could be helpful ^.^ I tried upgrading my RAM I have 16 GB now instead of 1 and it still happens.

Feature request: documentation for poll feature, and other related features

0

@dbo wrote:

As an example, I found an option about polls in the settings:

poll enabled
Allow users to create polls?

There didn't seem to be any additional info about the feature, so I googled and came across some articles that said I had to start the topic with "Poll: " and then add a list in the topic. That didn't work for me, so after some more googling, I finally found a post that mentioned that there actually needs to be a list surrounded by [poll] and [/poll].

I've been searching these forums and Google, but is there something that I'm missing? An easier way to surface these features for users and admins? I'm just not sure what other cool features I'm missing out on smile

I guess this is a UX thing. I feel sure that I edited the Education message, but now I can't find it. I searched the settings for Education, and found only "educate until posts". I searched posts for "educate" and couldn't find it there either.

I'm sure there's a huge button in front of my face that says EDIT HERE, but for the life of me, I can't find it.

Fix for "Logjam" vulnerability is deployed; requires rebuild

0

@riking wrote:

Vulnerability info: https://weakdh.org/

One of the main parts of the vulnerability is that anyone sharing DHE parameters across a wide range of servers would be open to passive spying on the SSL connections after a significant, but one-time, investment.

If you are using self-hosted Discourse with SSL without any extra proxies in front:

To remedy this, Discourse will now generate unique DHE parameters the first time you bootstrap the app with SSL enabled. To fix:

cd /var/discourse
./launcher rebuild app

If you are using discourse.org hosting:

All discourse.org servers are already using a 2048-bit Diffie-Hellman group. No further action is required.

If you are hosting multiple websites on the same machine as Discourse:

Run these commands:

# Or pick a different directory
$ mkdir -p /var/www/keys
$ chmod 750 /var/www/keys
$ openssl dhparam -out /var/www/keys/dhparams.pem 2048
$ chown www-data:www-data /var/www/keys
$ sudoedit /etc/nginx/ngnix.conf

        ##
        # SSL Settings
        ##

        ssl_session_cache    shared:SSL:10m;
        ssl_session_timeout  10m;

 ###    # Add this line
        ssl_dhparam /var/www/keys/dhparams.pem;
