Untranslated string: [IT.DATES.LATER.X_DAYS]

This often happens with Key strings. I would advice that if a translation is missing then use the untranslated English text, but not those technical strings like [IT.DATES.LATER.X_DAYS] that confuse users!

Thanks.

How can I troubleshoot Discourse comments embedding feature?

@amercader wrote:

Hi,

I've been trying for a while to embed Discourse comments on another site but still haven't been able to make it work. I started following the instructions on this blog: http://eviltrout.com/2014/01/22/embedding-discourse.html and later on I found other issues, which I was able to fix with guidance from topics on this forum.

I'm now at the stage where I think everything is set up correctly, but for some reason topics don't get created on the Discourse side (when visiting a page on the client site, the embedded iframe only shows "Loading discussion"). I've double-checked (dozens of times actually) the embed settings on Discourse, the embed snippet on the client site (including the canonical URLs), logs, etc and couldn't find anything wrong, so I started looking into something on our deployment setup.

I just wanted to clarify how the embedding works so I can investigate a bit further. My understanding is that whenever a user visits a page on the blog or site that embeds the comments, a request is made to Discourse, which will pull the referring page contents and create a topic on the fly if it does not exist (my site does not have an RSS feed).

My questions are:
* Is my assumption on how the embedding works correct?
* How could I debug if indeed Discourse is having trouble creating the topics from the remote site?

Apologies if this is somewhat obvious but I'm not familiar with Discourse or Rails

Many thanks in advance

A user tried to post a reply by email:

MUST KEEP TRACK OF WHICH DRIVE GOES IN WHICH SLOT!

Which is really true, and all he wanted to add.

His email was rejected, nor could I post it on his behalf without adding in some kind of non-upper case text. I just added the @username of the person he was talking to.. but it'd be nice if I didn't need to step in.

Can we allow all upper case posts?

Support category muted for all but 2 people

I want to create a support category thats muted to all but 2 people.

Our forum is basically a support forum for doctors....so our actual Support category (Meta) should only be open to Admins here at the company that runs the Forum. However, its a transport from Google Groups so Mailing List mode is on for everyone. The Email In address is set to support@domain.com however, I don't want those emails sent to everyone with Mailing List mode turned on. I only want 2 people to see those emails. Me and 1 other support person.

How do I do that?

Edit Category Order dialog v2

@riking wrote:

This is the design for the new category ordering dialog.

Goals:

  • Support both automatic (# of posts) category ordering and absolutely fixed category ordering
  • Allowing for a mix of the two would be nice
  • It must all be in one dialog - the current situation where you go around to every category edit dialog is not good

Proposal:

  • Every category has a numeric "position". New categories are created at position 0. Two categories with the same "position" as each other are ordered "fluidly" - i.e. the category with more posts is higher up.
  • Everywhere categories are displayed in a list, this ordering should be respected.

UI Mockup: made with airbrush tool + touchscreen in gimp

  • The "Reset to Fixed" button will give every category its own positive position value.
  • The "Reset to Fluid" button will set every category to the position of 0.

  • The up arrow (fa-chevron-up) increases the position of that category by 1. The down arrow (fa-chevron-down) decreases the position of that category by 1.

  • If a category's position has only 1 category in it, and the position above it has only 1 category in it, the up arrow will change to fa-toggle-up, and clicking it will swap the position of the two categories. (Same for position below it, down arrow, fa-toggle-down)
  • If a category's position has only 1 category in it, the numerical box on the right will be editable, and on blur (if you edited it), the category will jump to that position. (This is how you do partial fluid ranks from the reset-to-fixed state.)

Moderate emails which would normally bounce?

@watchmanmonitor wrote:

Continuing the discussion from Allow posts in all upper case:

Now that moderation is a thing, could we get a checkbox or option (or default behavior) to hold emails from known users for moderation, instead of bouncing them?

In this forum, we don't want to moderate all posts, but would be more than happy to handle the handful of moderated posts, instead of having the emails bounce back.

There are some avatars that are white in general that some users prefer, and yes it's an actual 64x64 white avatar. And then there are some who are 1x1 avatars that I know it's due to an old, but resolved issue.

May I request for a think outline border for the avatars?

We have a small community, fewer than 15 users. We don't care about minimum post length. Setting min post length and min body entropy to 1 doesn't disable the error messages. (I've cleared my cache, as far as I can tell this bug has been around for a while)

I see a couple threads on here about this being a fixed bug. I think it may still be present. I'm on v1.4.0.beta3

Mentions in tweet count towards mentions on Discourse site

@thefreekick wrote:

Small issue I noticed today on my forum.

If you embed a tweet with a large number of mentions in the body of the tweet, then those mentions are screened to see if they pass the total number of allowed mentions in a post. Obviously, they aren't real mentions because they are links on twitter, not links on Discourse.

e.g.

gives me this error

I assume that shouldn't be the case, but it's hardly a big or frequent issue.

Problem with downloading PDF (want to enable for only logged in users)

@kjain wrote:

We have an installation of Discourse on: http://discuss.analyticsvidhya.com

Recently, we wanted to enable download of a few PDF documents through the portal. I have enabled the same from the admin panel. We want the downloads to be enabled only for logged in users.

However, when I upload a pdf document, the upload happens fine (for example a screenshot below)

However, whenever someone clicks on the link, the download doesn't happen. Instead it is stuck at CDN

URL. This is how it looks:

I have tried providing a link directly to the file from upload location and that works for logged in users. However, people trying to download without login do not get a pop up saying they can not download the file without being logged in.

Any one else facing this problem? Or has a solution to the same? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Trouble with setting up mail

@Rene_Vucko wrote:

Hi, I just sucessfully installed a mail server on my virtual machine. I tested it out, and it can send mail out(I sent a mail from the computer to my gmail account and I recieved it). Now I installed discourse, the forums are running perfectly, but I can't seem to get the confirmation mail for my first admin account. When I launch

sudo ./launcher mailtest app`

I get the error: ERROR: hostname 'mail.server.com' doesn't match 'ubuntu'.
Now my settings are like this(in the app,yml):
DISCOURSE_DEVELOPER_EMAILS: 'mymai@domain.com'
DISCOURSE_HOSTNAME: 'localhost' --the virtual machine box IP is 10.1.0.210, where I can access the forums
DISCOURSE_SMTP_ADDRESS: 'mail.server.com'
okay so the "mail.server.com" is my postfix hostname. In my /etc/hosts I have edited it like this

10.1.0.210 mail.server.com
127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 ubuntu

I didn't change anything here except for the added mail.server.com.
Now my etc/hostname looks like this

ubuntu
10.1.0.210 mail.server.com

My postfix is configured with the relay mail server of our company, and when I try to send mail to any email accounts from the command line, it works. I get the email. It's not even in the spam folder. So I guess this is configured correctly.

DISCOURSE_SMTP_PORT: 25
I have tried using 587 but it gives me even more errros and says conn refused.
DISCOURSE_SMTP_USER_NAME: 'mymail@domain.com'
DISCOURSE_SMTP_PASSWORD: 'mypassword'

And that's it from my side, hope you guys can help.

The initial goal was to connect drupal with these forums, is this even possible? Thanks!

Interesting how quickly non-categorised posts vanish into the abyss

@gingerling wrote:

I just figured out how to force category selection cause we were having uncategorised posts (posts with no category) and I kept finding them buried under others a long way down the list.

Now I fixed my problem, I have to say it's interesting how bad the problem was - I admin the forums daily or more, and in that brief time a post made only hours ago would fall off the end of the first chunk of posts and into the scroll down area. I guess this is because people are looking at the support category all the time, and so all those posts get refreshed?

Google Webmaster isn't happy about page titles being the same on multiple pages

Not sure if this is worth attention, but Google Webmaster tools recommends me to make page titles different for different URLs. Maybe we should add something like (page 2 or 3 etc ...) in parenthesis when accessed directly by a link with page=N in it?

Even it doesn't make any sense, if Google Webmaster is not happy about it, I suppose it affects my rating in search results a bit?

Why is subcategories list always so thin?

"Categories" page looks inconsistent when placed first in the menu

@meglio wrote:

So, in my setup "Categories" is the home page.

Firstly, when on the home page, both the "Categories dropdown" and the "Categories" menu item is shown next to each other - this makes little sense to the users. If Categories is the home page, we should probably not show it when the home page is displayed?

Secondly, when a category page is opened, the "Categories" page disappears - while actually that's exactly when I would like it to appear and act as a Home page.

So, in my view, the current behaviour is opposite to the intuitive one.
Does it make sense to anyone else?
