Which Linux distro for production server?

I'm considering the following:

  • CentOS 7.1
  • Debian 8.1
  • Ubuntu 14.04

I've used CentOS for quite a few years and have always been extremely happy with how solid and reliable it has been. However of late, I've felt that it's (or at least my version 6.6) lagging in terms of latest software. So am thinking about reformatting the server with a new OS.

Which of the three do you recommend and if possible, why?

Pinging groups inside reply

I mention a similar feature to Cannot invite a group to a message

Using the "@" feature on groups inside replies currently resolves in pinging to each user inside that group and blows of the reply with a never ending list of "@" pings. On the other hand you are restricted to 10 pings inside each reply.

How about simply left the "@groupname" in this situation and just notifie the member inside it without mention them directly inside the reply. This feature should also be restricted to members at a certain trustlevel to prevent abuse.

Abnormally high disk usage, 3 days after initial install

Hey, we seem to experience an extremely high storage usage:

System information as of Tue Jul 14 10:44:03 EDT 2015

System load: 0.0 Memory usage: 2% Processes: 60
Usage of /: 71.1% of 39.25GB Swap usage: 0% Users logged in: 0

However, we have just recently (monday) installed a discourse app on the droplet, and it makes absolutely no sense that we should have spent 71% of the disk space already (I had to increase to capacity of the server (Digital Ocean) just to be able to run the site, and we have only got 5 users!
I posted a ticket to DO and run the following command as per their recommendation:

du / | sort -nr

That returned the following list:

30665576	/
29322808	/var
25564564	/var/discourse
25563676	/var/discourse/shared
25563672	/var/discourse/shared/standalone
25492036	/var/discourse/shared/standalone/log
25490372        /var/discourse/shared/standalone/log/rails
---------------------------------------------------
3647708	/var/lib
3449284	/var/lib/docker

... and so on

I take it the culprit is the highlighted rails log folder. Before I go ahead and rm -r the folder contents, is there anything of importance in here?

Difficulty using the code tag

@gingerling wrote:

Hi

On discuss.phpList.org our users are having issues with the code tag. There seem to be two methods of using it

1) paste in your code, select it, and click the code tag - that works fine
2) Click the code tag and paste your code - this does not work

First of all, clicking the code tag says "indent preformatted text by 4 spaces" which is selected, persumably so if you paste it replaces it? This is very counter-intuitive, perhaps "paste your code" could be more helpful? Secondly, when you then paste the code, the formatting seems to be wiped anyway, so the code tag does not work. Perhaps I am misunderstanding something here?

method 1) is quite cumbersome, so I assumed method 2 was the intended use.

Anyway, there has been a long served forum mod who has struggled with this some much he just stopped modding confused

How are routes in acceptance tests declared?

Hi all!

I'm currently working on the following PR:

However, I'm having trouble figuring out how routes are defined in acceptance tests. For instance visit('search') results in a not found page. I had a look at https://meta.discourse.org/t/how-to-use-fixtures-or-pretender-in-an-integration-test/19587 but still couldn't figure it out. Any help would be appreciated here smile

Image compression

@Jake_Shadle wrote:

Some of our users are complaining about the compression applied to images resulting in corruption, granted these are rendering engineers so they are very...fixated...on this kind of thing. But they do have a valid point, since it seems there is no way in the settings to tweak or influence anything related to image compression, with the one exception of being able to turn off automatic downloading of remote urls for specific patterns/everything.

I can think of at least 2 ways this could be handled in a fairly easy way.

  1. Be able to use a lossless compression algorithm, perhaps even on a per-category basis since it is only problematic for certain areas, not in general.
  2. Disable compression altogether, ditto on the per-category basis.

According to the image compression gem (I think this is what is being used), it looks like lossless compression is available, but my Ruby-fu is not strong enough at the moment to do something myself that I would have any confidence in. frowning

Here is a reference image for what I am talking about, though obviously, this might not work very well. smile

CSS Prefix and Browser Compatibility

I'm about to deploy Discourse on my company, and we still use Firefox 16. (yeah, I know...).

I'm seeing the bug below because .preview-wrapper doesn't contain the prefixed box-sizing, which is needed for Firefox 28-

How does Discourse handles CSS Auto-prefixing? Was looking for some auto-prefixer config but didn't found one.

Since Discourse is Firefox 14+ are PRs for oldie FF16 welcome?

Hi guys,
I have embedded several videos on posts in our community using wistia and have @messaged users in the post. When the user gets the email and clicks the link for the video it says, " This video is not authorized to be embedded here." Does anybody know why the link shows like that in the email notification and what we can do to get around it?
Thanks!

Syncing groups of users from external system

@wangerin wrote:

Continuing the discussion from SSO working, but how do I get admin and moderator-rights passed?:

What would be the best solution for syncing my external group-relations with discourse?

I need my users to belong to different groups, so the can have different rights on categories. Eg some intenal categories for the board, some for specific projects etc.

After users registerer, there will definately come new groups, for our events, projects etc, so pasing data at user creation is not an option, and wee already maintain the user/project relatation externally.

Any ideas?

Perhaps I'm a minority opinion, but I think being able to set a X hours time limit for a pinned topic would be nice. I often want to pin topics for a limited amount of time and it would be nice if Discourse could manage that for me. Kind of like the Category auto-close feature, but for topic pinning.

Discourse will be dropping IE9 support in 2016

@codinghorror wrote:

I think we're going to drop IE9 support starting in 2016.

Now that Windows 10 is just about out (by the end of July), and Windows Edge / IE12 will officially be released with it, this means our IE support matrix would be

  • Edge/IE12
  • IE11
  • IE10

IE9 has always been a pretty terrible experience for Discourse because it lacked pushState support, so the URL in the address bar never changed.. and it was the ragged edge of "kinda works, but may not look great" that represents our absolute minimum browser platform.

If you have any objections to this, please make your case here. wink
