Fail on bootstrap (/pups/lib/pups/exec_command.rb:105:in `spawn')

Hi everyone !

When I use the docker manager to upgrade Discourse, I have an error during the db migrate part since thursday or friday. Tonight I tried to rebuild app to see what happens (why not right ? sweat_smile ) and it always fail on bootstrap, here the message :

FAILED
--------------------
RuntimeError: cd /var/www/discourse && su discourse -c 'bundle exec rake db:migrate' failed with return #<Process::Status: pid 510 exit 1>
Location of failure: /pups/lib/pups/exec_command.rb:105:in `spawn'

When I reboot the droplet on Digital Ocean, my forum is fine, and it seems that my discourse version is actually upgrading (currently v1.4.0.beta6 +93) but this problem intrigue me.

I have some plugin : spoiler alert, discourse details and some personal plugins (based on the creations of the community) : some organized emojis, a complete toolbar, and some bbcodes, but it doesn't seem to be the problem considering the report. I didn't add any plugins in the last 2 or 3 weeks.

Do you have an idea of the cause of that problem ? This error message is enough or do you need more info ?

Again, sorry for my english, I hope i'm pretty clear stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye

Image uploads prior to SSO not appearing - img src not updated to new domain

@ladydanger wrote:

Hi guys, hoping someone in here can help out.
I've just recently added SSO so where previously, my instance of discourse was at here.com, it's now at forum.here.com.

When it was at here.com, I uploaded some images, but now at forum.here.com, it doesn't display.

Had a look in the inspect element and it appears that the img src is pulling from the old previous domain, and when I edit it by adding the subdomain of .forum, it then appears (see pic below). There's no issue though with uploading images or files in while in the new domain.

Have the url in app.yml and sitesettings have also be updated.

Add "New Topic" button in full page search view

I hypothesise that when a user makes a search, especially when drilled down into a specific category, the user wants quick access to the "New Topic" button, in case the search does not return the desired results.

This just happened to me when I was checking to see if a bug I wanted to report already existed. When my search turned out to be fruitless, the next natural step was to make a new topic, but in order to do that I had to jump back to the index page, click "New Topic" and select the Bugs category.

Mockup:

If you're drilled down into a specific category, the category selector should default to that category.

Probably a good pull-request candidate?

Assets/CDN loading issue again

Hello!

I’m afraid we’re having the same issues with the assets returning 500 errors (https://meta.discourse.org/t/assets-disappearing-and-reappearing-randomly/31391?u=laurakalbag) again.

Some of the same assets as last time, some different. Could you please do the same CDN magic you did the other day to fix it again? We want to launch our forum tomorrow, but need it looking as it should! smile

Releasing "Twig Anything" v1.2 - display any Discourse data anywhere in WordPress

0

@meglio wrote:

New version 1.2 of Twig Anything arrives!
(read the original announce topic).

Twig Anything is a WordPress plugin that lets you fetch any data from Discourse and display it anywhere in your WordPress blog with using shortcodes. See a nice demo and an illustrated step-by-step tutorial.

New Features in v1.2

one Official Visual Composer support

Visual Composer is a popular plugin that simplifies building complex layouts for your WordPress blogs and posts. A lot of plugins tend to play well with it. And so does Twig Anything!

In the Visual Composer editor, you will find a new block named “Twig Anything Template”. See demo

two Intelligent handling of data retrieval and parsing errors

From now on, you can control what to do if there has been a failure while fetching or parsing data. You have one of 3 options to choose from:

  • use cache or display nothing - will try using data from out-of-date cache if it exists, otherwise display nothing (an empty string); in other words, if error will be thrown while retrieving data, an old data from cache will be used, if available, otherwise nothing will be shown. This can can happen, for example, if Discourse server is unavailable because it's restarting after upgrade.
  • use cache or display error - will try using data from out-of-date cache if it exists, otherwise display an error message
  • always display error - always display an error message - might be useful while you are developing your website and there are very occasional visitors yet.

three Intelligent preview mode

As you know, you can preview any post before you publish it by clicking the standard WordPress' preview change button:

With Twig Anything, you can preview your templates the same way. In the preview mode, a special notice is shown, and only under it comes the rendered template:

As you can see from this screenshot, in preview mode any errors are always displayed, and the data is always retrieved from the data source and never from the cache.

Thanks for your interest!

  • Access plugin from the twiganything.com website

Embedding with multiple categories?

0

@JamesChevalier wrote:

The current method of embedding discourse into another site requires a single category be selected for all embeds. This is done in Admin -> Embedding, by setting the embed category value.

Are there plans to allow multiple categories be used for multiple embeds, or is there a way to do that currently?

The scenario I have is a single host/site (not WordPress) that I'd like to embed Discourse in, which has a few separate sections. The comments within each section in that site should go to different categories within the Discourse site.

Pick your DNS name wisely

@steve_pd wrote:

We're mulling over whether we made the wrong call using 'discourse' in our URL. Yes the word has a relevant meaning, but in hindsight there were better and more obvious options.

There are plenty of examples of accepted uses of product names as DNS records, plenty of orgs still run their webmail at exchange.corpname.com - the big difference of course is that the users are employees, they're told where to go, choice and interpretation or meaning aren't a factor.

We've been using optimizely to A/B test alternatives in our site navigation and 'community', 'forum' and even 'meta' score higher than 'discourse'. Maybe once Discourse develops a reputation beyond the community this will change. The stats we're seeing from this test suggest that we've almost stunted the growth of our community by using a fancy word.

I think the question (and lesson) is to know your audience, if they're a cerebral bunch who really really understand the use of the term, it might be an ok signpost. If you've any doubts whatsoever it's probably wiser to stick to a more conventional alternative.

It's my fault of course, as a big user of the boards at omnigroup it felt quite logical at the time. Now we have to consider a DNS change, new SSL cert and updating a whole load of WordPress database entries. Yuck.

Can't seem to create topic or post using discourse_api gem

@NicMcPhee wrote:

I'm trying to migrate 100 or so messages from another discussion tool experiment to our newish Discourse install (which folks are generally much happier with – thanks!). I can use the discourse_api gem to connect to the install and successfully pull down things like recent posts and a list of users, but any attempts to create a topic or a post fail in a way that I can't make sense of.

There's no error returned or any indication of failure; I just get the 50 latest posts back with no other info, and my new topic/post never appears. Has anyone else had this experience? Am I just doing something silly? Is there some way (in Ruby, via the gem) to get the error message that I assume is getting swallowed somewhere along the way?

Many thanks in advance.

Ctrl+clicking a notification closes the notifications menu

@Zecc wrote:

A few days ago the bug where middle-clicking a notification would close the notifications menu was solved. I can no longer find that topic to drop a link to it. No matter.

This is a variation of the same bug: left-clicking a link while holding Ctrl should also open a new background tab and not close the notifications menu.

This is particularly important for touchpad users (yes, there are still a few of us; and no, pressing both touchpad buttons doesn't always work).

Set password email copy for new sign-ups is potentially confusing

@aral wrote:

This email is sent when an invited person accepts an invitation.

The problem:

The last paragraph is unnecessary and confusing. They don’t have a password yet. It might lead them to think that they should have received or had an existing password somehow.

When I clicked on the link, I got a screen with just one text field for choosing a password.

Suggested improvement:

Remove the last paragraph from the copy.

Password change link is too old screen references non-existent control

@aral wrote:

The screen you get when the link in your invitation email is invalid mentions an “I forgot my password” control (button?) that doesn’t exist.

(You probably have to click on log in to see it.)

Suggested improvement:

Either include the forgot password button on this screen and keep copy the same (getter) or change the copy to provide a link to where the person can actually do something about this.

As is, the next step is not clear.
