Frivolous Unimportant Social Discussions?

Is it appropriate to share frivolous, off-topic information in this forum?

I'm experimenting with different features and would like to exchange personal information such as what keyboard I use, what I wrote on my blog, and what my opinion is on things outside of the scope of Discourse features. I think it will make my research into Discourse more pleasant and personalized.

Where can I post an "introduce yourself" type of thread?

One example of information I want to share is that my friend bought a CODE keyboard and really likes it.

Another bit of information is that I wrote a blog post about Discourse and want to get some feedback/discussion about it.

http://blog.kunalo.net/2014/01/jeff-atwood-is-genius-on-how-people.html

There are several points around the philosophy of community software that I would like to debate, but this is probably only after there is a certain level of trust and information exchange.

I am using the Ubuntu Discourse forum as a way to test usage. It's an interesting situation there since the vBulletin forum is more active and there's some animosity between people with different views, some friction between the Discourse users and the vBulletin users.

Currently, this is the behavior of the items in the topic list:

  • Blue: Takes you to your read position
  • Orange: Also takes you to your read position
  • Brown: Also takes you to your read position
  • Red: Takes you to top with Best-of mode on, if available
  • Purple: Takes you to top
  • Green: Takes you to end

I would like to change the behavior of Orange to that of Purple. That is, the "read more" on a pinned post takes you to the first post of a topic.

I also expect people to reuse this graphic when talking about the behaviors of a topic list item smile

User login creates redirect loop with nginx and thin

I'm having trouble getting my Discourse install to properly log in users using anything other than username/password authentication. Going through Twitter, Facebook, et cetera results in a redirect loop.

I've recently updated /etc/nginx/sites-available/discourse.config to match the new nginx.sample.conf in the repository in hopes that it might solve my issue, but to no avail. Any help would be much appreciated.

Sphinx search for Discourse

Katie Hunter wrote:

Hi, i am not aware if whether or not Discourse uses sphinx for its search function http://sphinxsearch.com but it is very powerful and light. I know on my forum which uses Vbulletin, i had to integrate the sphynix search which works really well than the Mysql default search which comes with VB =) b/c we have around 5 million posts and 1.7+ million members. Vb Mysql default search was not the right approach for big to growing communities.

Does Discourse uses it for their search function? If not, i would really recommend it and if there is any plans for it?

Is that a feature or a bug?

Presence features for forums

Many (almost all) forums out there have features that inform you of the current state of activity on the forum.

Something awful

Penny Arcade

WarriorForum

The concept behind this feature is that if feels better to participate in a forum where you know lots of people are active.

This feature often gets pretty pervasive. It will often display online status of each user when you see an avatar. What if I don't want users to know I am online at 4AM every morning?

At Discourse we have no presence related features at the moment. Is presence a core feature of online discussion?

Can presence features be implemented in a non-obtrusive way? Should this be a core feature in Discourse or a plugin?

Closing own created Topics for users at level 3

Continuing the discussion from What do user trust levels do?:

Many times on this very forum I have raised bugs and when they get fixed I have to request for closing them, which I think is unnecessary waste of time for admin team.

If at level 3 one can "Recategorize and rename topics" (even other's topics) then they he/she should be allowed to close their own topics.

What about having an option to show the "birthday" of the user which counts year(s) from the registration date and sends the automated happy discourse birthday message to the user?

This user has trust level 3:

When clicking the button, you get this:

This shows what is needed to get from trust level 2 to trust level 3. But this user is on 3 already...

Something else I noticed in this context:
Only trust level 3 (and 2?) shows the requirements (ignore the lack of translation). Trust level 1 doesn't have that progress button.

Category Arrangement

I started arranging categories in terms of color blocks, for example all red blocks are clumped together, blue blocks are clumped together, etcetera. But after tediously arranging them in personal sequence & saving it, it looks like it still got all jumbled up? Could there be a bit of entropy?

The only sequence that got saved properly starts with category "General Forum" all the way to "Issues & Warranty". Everything else below issues & warranty did not save properly in their preferred order.

It also looks like the category order does a bit of a shuffle dance once again when viewing it logged out.

Benchmarks on dedicated and VM instances, any statistics to share?

rubydoob wrote:

Has anyone done any benchmarks regarding requests per second on both bare metal servers and VM's?

I'm interested to know also when performing benchmarks, are certain pages cached by default? If yes, is there a way to disable caching just to see how things perform w/o caching so all requests go through the entire rails pipeline and code base.

Ofcourse knowing the numbers with caching is also important, but I am just curious as how things will behave without cache. Actually one important thing to note is say the cache gets cleared, your server could potentially go down if it can't handle the load w/o caching in place.

Discourse Home Page after 1.0, suggestion

Any plans to have discourse home page like below, at least for the ones hosted in house on discourse servers after 1.0.

I see a benefit for both as a user, I can explore multiple forums in my area of interest and owners gets added traffic.
It can be optional for site owners in case they want to opt out from listing.

Permanently Delete Posts/Topics

Andrew Hunn wrote:

I am a firm believer that some sort of functionality for admins to be able to permanently nuke a post from the DB needs to exist in a 1.0 Discourse release. The current functionality is very good for 99% of the use cases and I like how it's baked into versioning.

However, there are definitely some extreme circumstances where the content of a post needs to be completely expunged from view by anyone. Sometimes even long-time posters will go too far and post something that they don't want exposed online, even if to a handful of people (i.e. the admin team).

I realize implementing this has ramifications for all sorts of counters and data in the backend, but I think it's a pretty critical safeguard for the forum owner to have in their toolset.

How does this site aim to stop follow on questions?

Tim Radnidge wrote:

One thing I find quite clunky with existing forum sites is when someone asks a follow up question e.g.

"I've having trouble with my Nintendo, it has a blinking light that flashes twice" and then 3 pages and 6 months later you get someone else posting "I'm also having this problem but it flashes twice but 3 times instead of twice".

I guess this goes to moderation, but it is a common problem I have seen and I from what I can tell moderators won't be involved in every conversation unlike Stack Exchange which was more focused.

I'm not sure if this has already been talked about before, but concerning profiles, I find them a bit bland. It only really shows a users post activity and then a small tidbit of info. And the only way for users to interact directly with each other would be through PMs, do you think profile comments are something that could be implemented? Or would it be a plugin based thing?
