New setup - am not receiving admin email

I've set up discourse on digitalocean server with ubuntu - it all installed fine.

I have my own smtp server that sends out emails fine from various apps. I can telnet into it without a problem on port 25 from any location including the discourse server.

When I try to login or register or rebuilt discourse I don't seem to receive any emails.When trying to create a new user I can't as the system seems to hang verifying my user id. Tried using mandrill but it wants apis as password which I can't seem to find on their site.

Not sure how to move forward - the logs don't seem to show any errors or problems. Am pretty stuck.

Have been following closely for a long time, finally getting a community started

I've been following Discourse closely since it was first announced, and a friend asked me for advice on what software to build a new community with. Having participated in a few of the early communities including How To Geek out of curiousity, and seen the direction with which the project has headed, I wholeheartedly recommended Discourse.

Of course, this turned into "can you set it up for me", and I'm happy to say the setup went amazingly well, even with my fatfingered typos in the app.yml on the first try, and the admin interface really is a dream come true for anyone that's had to work with those other antiquated forums.

After getting it all up and running, I mangled the SSO setup, and was pleased that a quick search of Meta got me back into Discourse in minutes. Thank you for both amazing software and an amazing community behind it.

Change email for SSO user?

Reduce the number of clicks when upgrading

Upgrading currently takes two clicks.

First click:

Second click:

My suggestion

I would suggest that when coming from /admin/upgrade, the page with the first click, no second click is required.

Only when entering the direct URL of the second click page /admin/upgrade#/upgrade/discourse, into the browsers address bar, the second (then first) click is be required.

Poll Improvement Suggestion

$

@BCHK wrote:

We have about 2600 regular users on our forums and polls are popular - but lots of our non-technical users have problems with creating polls.

It would be really great if everytime someone created a poll, that Discourse recognized that it was a Poll - and appended a small link at the bottom of the poll that said something like "How to create a poll" - with a link to some simple instructions and code to copy and paste.

This would help educate people on how to create a poll (the interest on creating polls is most likely to be triggered when someone is looking at a poll).

This would greatly increase the use of, and reduce the problem our users have with, polls.

Need help and advice about Discourse setup

@DigitalNinja wrote:

I posted here last week but it seemed to have been completely deleted. I cant type the whole thing again so I'll be brief.

I've wanted discourse for months now, but for many reasons not able to. Since then I've moved my server to VPS with digital ocean, with this package

4GBMemory
2 CoreProcessor
60GBSSD Disk
4TBTransfer

I now want to integrate Discourse for my forums, on my community site. Will this droplet/server be enough?

And is the process complex??

Please let me know, it's urgent.

Thanks a lot.

Hi ,

I am using SSO in discourse from my parent website. For SSO i am using following URL on my end.

"https://dev.auth0.com/authorize?client_id=sdvsdfbjhdbfkdsfbdsfdsf&response_type=code&redirect_uri=http://discourse.dev.com/auth/auth0/callback"

This URL will redirect to discourse after SSO.The SSO is working perfectly but its redirecting to one page with "Authentication is complete. Close this window to continue." message.

How can i avoid this page and redirect to discourse home page?

Topic notification state is controlled by this button at the bottom of topics:

However, I am no longer sure "Regular" is the best word to indicate typical notification state. So let's put it to a vote.

Fill in the blank:

{blank}

You will be notified if someone mentions your @name or replies to you.

  • Regular
  • Normal
  • Standard
  • Default
  • Typical
  • Ordinary

Hello. I want to set up permissions on a thread such that members of a certain group can't edit posts in that thread, but admins can. Is this possible? So far we've been disabling editing by hiding the edit button, since the edit timeout has a lower limit of 1 minute.

Can I highlight some text in a fenced code block?

@Kristen wrote:

In a Discourse forum for techies discussing code in a specific language I'd like to be able to highlight something in a code block. For example the O/P posts some, broken, code and I fix it up. The user has to carefully read my improved code to see what I have changed, and putting a comment in the code like:

xxx = yyy <--- I MADE A CHANGE HERE

is a bit lame!, particularly on a complex line.

I suppose, ideally, it would just be a background colour to highlight a section, but if it was possible to put some sort of [color=red] or similar tags into the code that would provide more facilities to people which more artistically then me!

You can now install Discourse on DigitalOcean via Bitnami

Continuing the discussion from Easy install needed for Discourse to become the forum solution "for the next decade":

A "native" one-click app on DigitalOcean seems less likely now that they've teamed up with Bitnami to get wider app support "for free". But that's ultimately good news I guess!

One thing is confusing to me at this point though:

DigitalOcean users get two free months of Bitnami access.

Uh, I don't really understand what "Bitnami access" constitutes. Once I've done the install, I don't really need Bitnami for anything more, right? right?

I'm also glad to see that they're on the Stable branch, which means more pressure on the Discourse devs to figure out good compatibility checks wink

Suspended, inactive and blocked user with API key can still create topics

@gtanczyk wrote:

User is configured like this:

Inactive and suspended, yet I am still able to create topic with following code:

@data = {
  skip_validations: true,
  auto_track: false,
  title: "test",
  raw: "test"
}
resp = client.create_topic(@data)

Is this intended behavior? On the other hand category security settings are respected.

What I am trying to achieve: I have open source project with simple ruby script that downloads latest topics from some particular discourse instance and converts that to a static web site.
I would like to commit this API key for read only user, so everyone can clone this repo and start their work.

Is there any other way to achieve this(read-only user)?

Thanks

Edit: It also doesn't work when user is blocked

Auto-assign new embedded blog topics unique categories?

@oblio wrote:

I've embedded Discourse on 3 different blogs, and their comments will be included in Discourse as topics with 1 category: "blogs".

I'd want to separate them further. From the Admin interface this is not possible, since everything goes into the same category.

What would be the recommended method of changing these categories after the fact?
I could use keywords from the posts or even the title.

A Discourse plugin? Some kind of external tools that chews the database entries directly? Something else?

Thanks!

Hey guys! I'm a frequent user on the Infinite-flight forums but yesterday a continuous error occurs when trying to post a topic reply to it or to reply in a chat. (I wasn't able to log out too!) I know a http error with 4XX is a device specific error and the forums work fine on my laptop (from which I'm currently writing). I already tried clearing my history and website data but I'm even unable to log in now! Can you guys help me?

Cheers - Nick

PS: I find it weird I can't use my account from the infinite flight forums on this forum, (It took me only one min to create a new one with the same name and email address for this forum but still)

How to use a self-signed cert with Discourse for emails

$
0

@AstonJ wrote:

Using a self-signed certificate with your SMTP and POP mail in Discourse is easy once you know how - here's how!

There is a condition, and that is that your hostname (main domain for server - usually the domain used for your name servers) allows your other domains to check email through it (usually via mail.domain.com). Most hosting panels allow this.

Steps

  • First create your self-signed certificate - just make sure your 'web server hostname' does not have http or www (so something like yourdomain.com)

  • Then upload the certificate (not the key!) to somewhere on your server, such as yourmainsite.com/certs/8777373333.crt

  • Then add the following code to your app.yml:

run:
 - file:
     path: /tmp/add-cert
     chmod: +x
     contents: |
       #!/bin/bash -e
       #Download cert
       wget http://yourmainsite.com/certs/8777373333.crt  -O - > /usr/local/share/ca-certificates/your-email-cert.crt
       update-ca-certificates

 - exec: "/tmp/add-cert"

(Change http://yourmainsite.com/certs/8777373333.crt to match your details)

  • Then ./launcher rebuild app to rebuild your app.

  • Then in your admin control panel, make sure the pop3 polling host setting is just the hostname (so not mail.domain.com, just domain.com).

That's it!!

If you need to trouble shoot:

./launcher enter app

Then cd /etc/ssl/certs and make sure your crt is there.

Thanks to @riking for all his help in this smile

Continuing the discussion from Clicking @user in post preview goes to new page, loses composed message:

I really miss this feature!

Drafts are constantly saved anyway.

A few better ideas IMHO:

  • Disabling it only while draft isn't saved
  • Adding a setting on admin
  • User preference, also triggered as a popup layer on first time user clicks there

Here, it looks like I am announcing a new game and team (which would be quite a big deal for a game dev company). The truth is that I simply split a horrendously long topic of a fan-created game project.
